Leadership refers to the ability of an individual influencing people or a group of people with the aim of achieving the set goals and objectives of an organization. Leadership requires all the departments of the organization to be motivated and harmonized by coordinating the people working in those sections towards achieving the set goals and objectives. To achieve good leadership in an organization, the leader(s) should develop and practice good leadership skills which motivates and encourages the people they lead. Consequently, having leadership in every department ensure that all the activities done or to be done are flowing towards the common goal mark. Leadership requires all the people to respect the opinions, ideas and the set rules and regulations (Adair, 2013).
Effective leadership requires sufficient skills to handle issues and provide the way forward despite the many challenges that accompanies leadership. Leadership can be under one person leading a group of people or it can be found by assigning the duty of leading others. Moreover, leadership does not necessarily require the individual to have knowledge of the department to lead; but one should possess leadership skills for changing the department from a less performing to a more performing department. For an effective leadership, there should exist a cordial and strong relationship between the leader, the individuals being led and the management (Ambrose, 2003).
Consequently, for leadership to be effective, the leader and supporting staff should work together to ensure that all the activities are done within the stipulated timeline. However, for the leadership portfolio to be effective, it should include building professions to learn, creating the spaces for reflecting and coordinating so as to accomplish the set goals (Palmisano, 2011).
As a leader, I intend to be a respectable, well behaved and reliable leader to my company and family by providing them with necessary basic needs and bringing up a well-cared family. I intend to provide them with the necessary support and working tirelessly towards developing my community. By initiating constructive and profitable projects and activities in my society, I aspire to provide them with the necessary leadership skills, and encouraging them to corporate so as to accomplish the project ( Jay, 2009).
By providing them with the reliable and complete information, I aspire to work with the members of the community so as to grow and develop as a whole. In addition to this, I intend to plan the strategies, activities and the time frame for carrying out the work and the projects currently undergoing in the society. Encouraging the community based groups like the local sports team while building the society helps in identifying the weak areas to be adjusted. Thus, I intend to learn from the leaders, practice their leadership techniques and encourage coordination among the team players.
As leader, I intend to ensure public participation in building the community so as to realize the development of the community. The participation will ensure that right or correct activities are carried out and responsibility encouraged and motivation. Responsibility and accountability will help the leader to exercise good leadership. To achieve this, I intend to delegate activities to them with aim of encouraging hard work and responsibility to their actions.
Practicing good leadership skills and practices will encourage effective communication with the intention of delegating duties, motivating them, encouraging creativity and at the end receiving feedback from my family and the society at large.
The traits or characteristics exhibited in the chapter regarding my leadership portfolio responsible for distinguishing me as an individual include the communicating skills, being technically competent, being flexible in terms of performing the work, being determined and persistent, and the ability to working peacefully with fellow co-workers (Boggs, 2003).
As a manager of the shop, my role was to employ an assistant to share the activities and responsibilities of handling the clients and the suppliers. Having invited my colleague to apply for the position, I discovered that he had the customer care skills despite the fact that he has never worked in a cafe. I employed Mike to be my assistant in the shop and he proved that he can be as well a good manager of the shop. This is because through his flexibility in handling different activities without delaying the clients and working smartly while serving the clients (Valencia, 2007).
Consequently, Mike was determined to work and he put his energy and efforts towards performing his duties and tasks. No matter how much he failed, he never gave out but his persistence helped him achieve his goal of becoming a good manager. Mike was competent enough because he was able to finish his targets within the stipulated timeframe and he used to work perfectly with little correction. While working with him, I never encountered any cases of wrangles nor misunderstanding as we had regular communication during our working period. Nevertheless, the good communication skills full of courtesy and respect, helped us to handle clients who were initially difficult to handle.
The other traits in the work place include the ability of being loyal, i.e. being trusted by the employer or fellow workmates and the public at large, skills for solving problems, practicing good ethics of work, being honest, good listening skills, being industrious and creative, being logic, having sufficient knowledge, the ability of cooperating with fellow workmate, being cheerful, quick understanding, among others.
Passionate for the work and the clients: As far as leadership is concerned, it’s quite hard to state about being passion with the aspects of the work. Having the leadership traits and motives in the line of management will help me in determining the type of leadership results that I want to achieve and have. Thus, having them will help in determining the type, nature and size of workers to employ and work with in the office. This will not only help in growing the business or work but will also help in developing the good image for the work to the clients. In addition to this, they will help me in setting a timetable and activities, who should do, how and to which far. Through them, I will develop a systematic leadership schedule to help in handling different departments which need leadership assistance and improvement.
Basically, these developments will be obtained by attending the learning institutions, which offers leadership skills, attending to the seminars and workshops established to offer leadership refreshment courses and also meeting regularly with those who have in the field of leadership, reading from online materials like the google, and so forth. Thus, the leadership skills will help me in leading people in a professional way towards the set goals and objectives.
Charisma refers to the ability of attracting or being attracted of an individual to others in a compelling way so as to arouse some feelings or inspire others. Additionally, being charismatic tries to simplify the leadership skills and roles by making it attractive to many people who would like to become leaders of different stations. Charisma helps greatly in strengthening our relationships with people while communicating and handling of issues (Avolio, & Yammarino, 2013).
In reality, for the last couple of days, I exhibited communicating in an eloquent way while handling clients; the virtue that helped me explain, clarify and pass information to them. By employing charismatic in leadership, I was able to develop communication skills, which aroused emotions for my team members and providing an easy path for smooth communication; and also influenced the ideas by developing an enhanced positive character. Consequently, I developed a consideration by responding to the needs and requirements of those I met during the week.
Communicating effectively helped me in engaging the team members in making decisions to help us sail through difficult times thus motivating and encouraging them to work hard despite the challenges. In addition to this, by showing high levels of maturity by giving and proving the necessary wisdom and skills which I have experienced over many years in the business environment. Portraying body signals and languages positively like smiling, introducing and familiarizing with the outsiders and the newly acquired members. Through this, it was easy to display my charismatic characteristics. Also, maintaining the eye contact while communicating ensured that we were having a common meeting session (Kenkare, 2015).
It was my obligation to ensure that my team achieved the set goals by developing an effective path with sufficient strategies to follow. Through self-confidence and monitoring, I was able to lead the team without pretending to be someone else or copying someone. Moreover, I kept track of the steps that I made regarding the process of helping my team set future plans and goals to be achieved; and meeting new clients introducing new things, serving them and listening to their issues and complaints.
As a leader, I would like to improve and develop integrity, have well set fortitudes towards working and encouraging the importance of being honest to all members of the team as it matters a lot. I will be working on improving personal qualities to be different from other members. This will help in increasing the level of attentiveness and becoming charismatic. Moreover, expressing confidence and being optimistic will strengthen personal confidence and that of the team as they are empowered and encouraged to work together as a team. I will also take risks in working towards achieving the visions of the company by sacrificing personal time, resources and the leadership provision (Czo?vek, & Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, 2006).
Task-oriented behavior refers to the method of approach whereby the leader opts to focus to activities which need performance so as to achieve set goals or meet set performance standards. The behaviors include the adapting to the situation helped me work closely with the team members in solving difficulties and challenges that faced them and providing the solution for the difficulties. Moreover, by setting high performance standards helped me and my team members to work towards achieving the set goals using the standards established (Gamage, 2006).
Through concentrating on the strength of the group performance, as the team leader I was able to work on the strength and at the same time trying to reduce the weaknesses by improving the working conditions and the various approach methods towards encouraging high performance standards. The team members were had the ability to ask tough questions regarding leadership and also the team at large and its performance.
Through the questions asked, the feedback assisted in creating openness to the members. This is because the issues raised were answered appropriately thus each member was able to give their opinions regarding leadership, performance of the team as a whole and the alignment of the team members while executing their duties. Engaging the team members while performing different technical tasks using the hands-on guidance technics, skills and technics were installed to the members and the immediate feedback was given thus considering the emotions of the team members regarding the newly introduced working systems and activities. Relationship-oriented behaviors refers to the approach method whereby the focus is on satisfying, motivating and developing the members (Lewis, 2007).
Applying the behaviors at the work place, all members were able to give their opinions and improved their working standards. Consequently, the newly learnt skills were applied at the shop in serving the clients and handling their recommendations and complaints amicably. As the leader, I suggested that all the members to support each other in terms of emotions by encouraging them to do their best. The team accepted my strategies and working standards and we were able to implement them and the results saw us making many steps ahead and thus giving the team the right path to follow. For the implemented steps to be followed, we were to improve on delivering services to the clients and restoring their confidence since as the team we were committed towards serving them efficiently and keenly.
Moreover, the behaviors helped the members to learn the importance of being the servant leader while leading fellow members and inviting their opinions towards building a strong working team. The members were given the opportunity to encourage and inspire each other so that they can move together as a family not a team based on individualistic motives (Foster, 2012).
I have been thinking about encouraging the students to behave responsibly in and around the learning institutions. The behavior I wanted the students to have seemed to be contradicting to their usual lives but I had to give it a trial before looking for an alternative method for encouraging them to change their behaviors. The other day I was heading to the school dormitories to collect my games kit only to find some students gambling at the backyard of the dormitories. As I was getting closer to the where they were, I was curious to know how they play and the factors that pushed them into gambling while at the school compound. Initially, I thought they will change only to realize that they had intensified the gambling and using a lot of money and other resources (Sims, 2003).
After thinking about the things they were doing, I realized that they were being influenced by the lack of role model and mentor for them to emulate. From the records of their performance, majority were bright students but because they lacked role models and mentors, they opted to use their revision time in playing and gambling. At one point, a friend of mine approached me asking me to lend him some money so that he can gamble with. I was tempted to lend him some but I first thought about it and the impact of such activities to such a young student engaging into such activities instead of concentrating studying (Peterson, 2005).
If I would lend him the money, I will be encouraging such behaviors that are not morally upright for the students who will at long last end up stealing and selling other students belongings. Nevertheless, they may end up using the school fees in gambling, something that is against the rules and regulations of the school.
From the scenario, I learnt that in life if you make wrong decisions and follow bad characters, you may end up living a poor life and being irresponsible in making decisions regarding life. I wanted to be a mentor, so that I can mentor and change the behaviors of the students. By practicing ethical, I avoided lending money to the colleague who wanted to gamble something that could have eroded his destiny and responsibility as a student (In Savur, & In Sandhu, 2017).
As a leader in the organization, having a good communication platform ensures that all the departments are updated of the recent news and information so as to ensure they are working towards a common goal. Thus, performance of the working team need addressing in order to raise the sales and returns of the company. One day Tony was observed working in a slow and demotivated manner while handling the clients. He looked unusually tired and weak. As a leader, I called Tony into my office so as to get the root cause of his underperformance in the work place. Gently, I asked Tony to explain the reasons for him not performing as it was the case (Papa, Daniels, Spiker & Daniels, 2008).
Slowly, after a silence of three minutes, Tony opened up and began to speak how the stresses are discouraging him from performing as was the case before. He said the inability to handle and manage the stress hindered him from focusing on performing and rather reducing his work motivations and morale. He further said that the stress has consumed a lot of his energy and work vigor, reducing him into an underperformer. I paid attention to his story without destructing him nor cutting it short. As a leader, I told him I will mentor, guide and advise him on the steps he needs to take in order to manage the stress. I told him I will allocate a day and time so that we can meet and discus the issue and find the breakthrough. After the session, Tony appreciated my effort to guide and advise him on his situation. He then left with the anxiety for the meeting day since he has been relieved the burden of being stressed (Perry, 2010).
I personally reckoned my effort of being a productive and caring leader having assisted Tony off his stress. However, poor communication can at times cause misunderstanding among the team members, language barrier between the parties may lead to development of wrangles.
People from different regions practice different activities and view cultures for other people differently. Therefore, as a cross-cultural leader, working with people from different environments and cultural practices, it’s good to accept their cultures without showing any signs of objecting it. Thus, accepting the cultures will help in socializing with the residents of that regions regardless their status, gender or even appearance. For instance, if people from a given environment are practice cultures that are different from yours, as a leader you should accept and try to teach them the importance of leaving the outdated practices and accepting the modern practices into their wellbeing (Moodian, 2009).
Consequently, people who are physically challenged or impaired should be accepted, treated equally, loved, cared and involved in development since they form the clan. As a leader, it’s my role to champion for the equal participation of all the members towards the development of the community despite the differences in the cultural practices (Dolan & Kawamura, 2015).
As a leader, I have been able to experience different cultural practices and in the process, learning new things from different people. During my weekly tour to a certain community, I met a physically handicapped man named Tom, who is an entrepreneur. Despite the fact that he is a disabled man, I had the opportunity for relating with him and I learnt a lot from him because being disabled doesn’t mean that he wasn’t able to relate with, work effectively and develop the community.
During the meeting, I was able to learn many things from Tom among them hardworking with lots of determination to proof that being disabled does not mean one is unable to perform. I also learnt how to persevere the views of the community regarding the physically challenged people, being determined and above all, acceptance so as to enhance the sense of belonging to the big community.
Thus, for an effective leadership, all the stakeholders of an organization should ensure that they give the leaders chances and the necessary support they need. Consequently, leaders should ensure that they there is ethics in the business and frequent communication so as to update fellow team members of the current developments and changes in the company system. The leaders should team up with the members of the company in order to ensure they have a common goal and objectives by combining the generated ideas, efforts, skills and available resources. Practicing good leadership skills and strategies in business setup will help in taking it the new level. Thus, the leaders should encourage others by being their role models the importance of working hard and following the set rules and regulations.
