It can be said that no organization can work in the absence of effective leadership because every organization has their own goals and objectives which requires proper guidance to get fulfilled. The human group also neds proper control and systematization. There are so many advantages of leadership such as it helps in influencing the behaviour of people. It helps the followers to fulfil their needs. It introduces the required changes in the organization along with solving every-day conflicts. It is also supportive of training and development in the subordinates.
Sometimes, leadership and management are closely related but it is essential to understand that in order to build an effective management, leadership is the most important. It is one of the most crucial components in a management. A true leadership builds an environment in which every employee develops and excels. Leadership can be described as having the potential to influence the entire group of people to accomplish their goals. This influence can come from the formal sources such as from the managerial positions. In this case, the manager must hold the traits of a leader or he must possess the qualities of a leader. The leaders are supposed to build strategies so that a competitive advantage is gained in the highly competitive industry. An organization requires robust management along with robust leadership in order to gain optimal outcomes.
The paper is focused in the elaboration of my individual experience in the post of the human resource manager with a precise focus on the academic and the professional learning that I had over the years. Apart from that, the impact of the experience on the personal learning and development is also recorded in the paper. Along with that, the major focus of the paper will be on the leadership and management capabilities that I am able to gather in my career as the human resource manager. A development record which provides in depth analysis and information regarding the activities that I have participated in, is also included in the paper in order to show the evidences for the skills that I managed to inherit. Apart from that, the paper also included a developmental plan for activities that I am going to participate in.
However according to Bolden (2016) , there are certain differences between leadership and management. The leaders are found to build the organizational vision as well as communicates it to the employees in order to achieve it while the managers become lenient towards the responsibilities and delegates authority. The duties of management include organizing, planning, staffing, controlling and directing whereas leadership is an essential part of the management functions. According to Bolman and Deal (2017), the leaders usually focus on teamwork, listening and building relationships which motivate and persuades the followers. A manager receives the authority by the position in the organization while a leader receives his authority from the people who follow him and his ideals. The leaders follow their instinct where the managers are bound to follow the policies and procedures of the organization. Goetsch and Davis (2014) are of the opinion that the management of a workforce is more related to science while on the other hand, leadership is more of an art. Leadership is more about verbal communication while management is more related to written communication. However, an effective leader is also supposed to not violate ethics in the work process. Obolensky (2017) say claims that a leader must preserve his dignity and respectfulness and must have the mind set to serve others. He should be honest and must promote justice. Hence, it must be kept in mind that leadership is all about values both moral and ethical. A leader has to be aware of his own personal values and traits of his own behaviour.
Being the post of the human resource manager for some amount of time now, I am able to inherit some significant personal skills which has the potential to help me in my usual daily conduction. With considerable amount of experience in the human resource management, I am able to generate the quality skills of the evaluation of papers or any event. In addition to this, my work experience helped me to have the instant quality of producing strong attention to any of the events or the topics in detail. Apart from that I have the potential to play the role of an effective team member where I will be able to guide my followers and friends. Being in the post of the human resource manager, I am able to gain the competency of improved management and organization. Apart from that, one of the major quality of a leader is to make sure that the followers do not get any impact of any adverse incidents and do have any sort of fear inn them. Apart from that, the leaders need to have the quality of maintaining the confidentiality of the critical issues which helps to reduce the conflict among the followers. My experience of operating in the position of the human resource manager helped me to gain these competencies in leading my team. One of the major aspect of the modern leadership is the fact that the leaders must appreciate the effective communication. In this case, my experience helped me to develop a skill where I am able to communicate only against authentic evidences. This helps me to reduce the communication gap among my followers and along with that, it reduces the possibility of the generation of any sort of conflict among the followers. The effective management of the conflict with the application of the effective communication helps me to create a better operational area for my followers. Along with that, I am able to observe that the modern day leaders are significantly subjected to multitasking. The experience that I gathered from my career in many of the renowned organizations is crucial for me in building the capability of doing multiple tasks at a particular time. I was able to transfer this to many of my subordinate employees. This helped them to increase their operational efficiency so that they be able to produce significant amount of profit for their organization. Apart from that, one of the major feature of a good leader is to distribute the power among the members of the organization. I was able to gather the skills needed to encourage the effective participation of the employees or the followers in the decision making regarding their operations. This was significant in motivating the employees and at the same time, it was having notable importance for the management as it reduced their concerns regarding the operational process of the employees. Apart from this, I was able to develop the quality of proper understanding of the emotions and their reactions in various emotional phases of the employees. This was notably helpful for me in the taking fruitful decisions for the organization.
In case of the personal development of mine, I can sum up the qualities that I have li8ke the being curious, decisive thinker, a credible person, courageous to take the challenges, aim oriented, collaborative and along with that, I have the power to influence people towards positive outcomes. Though I have developed all the mentioned qualities, still the amount of it in my character or personality differs depending on the bands.
Being in the position of the human resource manager for several multinational organizations, I am able to develop a significant interest on the operations of any organization and have developed the skills required to identify the issues for which the business conduction of ay organization falters. With reference to the identification of the issues, I have able to develop the skills of analysing and evaluating the important insights or idea regarding the current issues that are affecting the smooth conduction of the organization. In addition to this, I have tried to get the solution for such issues and in doing so, I never feared to try new ideas which had the potential to meet the issues and was able to gain the competency of selecting the best option out of the probable solutions. This makes sure that the level of my skill “Curious” is band 1.
From my CV, it is visible that I am a person who like to collect the information from various sources and then analyse it in order to make the decisions. In doing the evaluation, I have developed the skills to compare and contrast the situation or the condition. With the evaluation, I put my own judgement to the findings of the evaluation and in addition I try to look into my experience for any sort of help that I need to recommend something effective for that situation. For the evaluation process, I have the capability of identifying suitable analytical skills or effective data gathering approaches. Apart from this, the skills and competency section of my CV is significant in specifying the fact that, being a professional serving in the post of the human resource manager, I like the workforce to take the decision regarding their operations. Hence my personality reflects the band2 of the mentioned characteristics.
The man management is a notable aspect of the human resource managers in the modern business industry and in that case my skills of managing the workforce and influencing my junior employees becomes important for the success of mine in the post of the human resource manager. In dealing with my employees and the other important stakeholders of any organization that I served, I had taken care of the fact that the culture of the organization, the policies of it and the governing frameworks inside the organization is in alignment for the incorporation of a positive an intent among the employees. During the conduction of the operations as a human resource manager, I am able to develop the skills for the identification of the probable reactions that the employees may have with my analysis or the decisions that I take. This helps me to effectively communicate with the employees and the upper level management as well. The level of my skill for influencing an individual can be considered to be of band 2.
Being in the position of the Human Resource Manager (HRM) was instrumental for me in the realization that the management of the resources specifically the employees of any organization is not solely dependent on the theoretical expertise that a manager achieved, rather than the enthusiasm or the interest of increasing the knowledge or the self-insights matters the most. Apart from that, I consider that the exchange of the sensible and the impartial advice from the part of the HRM is significant in achieving the credibility among the members of the organization.
Along with that I developed the required skills for showing the sensitivity and respect to the feelings, culture and the beliefs of the employees and the other members of the organizations. This helped me to increase my positive contribution towards the effective formation of the teams and on top of that, it was instrumental in the improvement of the collaborative and the constructive relationship that I had with the other members of the organization. Apart from this, as a human resource manager, I am strictly aim oriented where my primary concern is the productivity and profitability of the organization. I have gained the capability of identifying the issues or the factors that may have the potential to affect the profitability of the organization and the skills for the selection of the best solution in order to reduce the impact of those factors and lead the organization towards the achievement of the higher productivity and profitability. In doing so, I hate to back down from any sort of challenges. I am able to develop the skills of listening to the important inputs of the employees and the upper level management. In addition to this, I am able to gather the skills of questioning those inputs as well so that the relevancy of them in the organizational context gets checked.
The educations that I gained or the training activities that I undertook in the last 5 year is significantly in alignment with the operations that I conduct and is notably helpful for me as well. I got my certificate in the human resource management from the University Of Cape Town, South Africa. I was able to gain significant inputs regarding the career in the human resource management and the statutory requirement of it. In addition to this, I acquired notable insights regarding the Human Resource system and the policy of the recruitment and the selection of the personnel. I was able to understand the significance of the effective recruitment in any business organization and in response to that I developed the skills for the selection and the recruitment of the efficient and productive employees. Apart from this, the study was significantly helpful for me in the assessment of the various aspects of the performance management and in the formation of the policy regarding the workplace health and safety of the employees. On top of this, the study helped me to have significant knowledge regarding the local and international legislation regarding the Workplace Health and Safety policy. Apart from that, the study was influential for me in understanding the job role during the strategic or organizational changes. The requirements or the responsibility that the managers need to take care were inherited by me from the mentioned study.
The various change management frameworks like the Kotter’s 8 step model or the Lewin’s 3 stage model and many other were introduced to us in the course so that we be able to understand the mechanism and the requirements in the implementation of the change initiative. In the organizational context, it is seen that many of the modern business organizations are suffering from the incapability of the employees in performing with the desired quality and productivity. The study in the University of Cape Town was instrumental for me in the realization of the training needs of the employees and the importance of the training in their performance development. It is well know that the retention of the employees is a major factor for many of the modern business organizations and the competitive business world is the main reason behind that. The study showed the importance of the incentives and rewards in the effective retention of the employees with the portrayal of several markets survey.
Apart from that, I am pursuing Master Degree in the Human resource management from the University of Salford, Manchester. The ongoing study enables me to have significant knowledge regarding the employment relations and law of the local and international business market. Along with that, it is helping me in taking the strategic business decisions in a better manner. The project management is a notably important part of the Human Resource Manager’s job. The study is significant in the formation of the leadership skills like the planning of the business activities, controlling the execution of the planned activities, the calculation of the resources, the allocation of the resources for the implementation of the activity and the learning from the implementation. Apart from that, the study has great significance for me as it is important for my assessment of the different factors that are related to the management of the talent. In addition to the learning that I acquired in the University of Cape Town, the learning of the University of Salford is helping me to have the capability of identifying the factors that are responsible for the dissatisfaction or the job stresses among the employees of many modern organizations. In response of that, the study is helping me to find out the importance of the employee engagement activities in the reduction of the stress and the dissatisfaction of the employees that have the potential to influence the employees to leave their jobs. The importance of the recognition of the good work that the many of the employees of the modern organizations are able to conduct, are significant in motivating them towards better productivity and the continuation of their good work.
In the past I have served in the organizations like the African Minerals Sierra Leone Limited and Sierra Leone National Petroleum Limited as the HR Supervisor and the Personnel and Admin Assistant respectively. From the experience in both the mentioned organizations, I was able to learn the techniques to supervise the domestic staff in order to maintain the office clean along with the maintenance of the usual actions like the recording of the office assets and the stationary. In addition to this, I learned the procedures for the registration of the loans given to the employees of the organization along with the organizing techniques of the meeting, seminar and conferences. Apart from that the detail specification of the job role of the employees, the job specification and the proper collaboration with the employees’ union was a major learning for me.
In the year 2013, I joined African Lion Agriculture Limited (Sierra Leone) as the head of the Department of the Human Resources. During my timespan of more than 1 year at the company, I was able to learn many aspects of the recruitment and the selection processes including the conduction of the interviews. Apart from that, I achieved the competency to assist the Head of Operations of the organization to maintain the good agricultural practices and in the achievement of the Roundtable Palm Oil Certificates. Apart from that, I learned to conduct the monthly staff audit for every project location and was able to manage the expatriate training.
During my operations in the Action Contre La Faim as the Human Resource Manager, I was able to learn the determination of the staffing number and the requirements of the employees in terms of skills and competencies to meet the organizational objectives. During my time period in the organization, I learned to prepare the headquarters payroll and techniques for the validation of the payroll. I understood the fact that the organization require significant amount of transparency in the recruitment process, the training and the promotional activities and in accordance to the legal guidelines and the ACF guidelines I was instrumental in the establishment of the transparency in those aspects.
Currently I am working for Sierra Mineral Holdings 1 Limited-Vimetco as the Human Resource and Corporate Affairs Director where I am the responsible person for the creation of the Human Resource strategy of the organization. Apart from this, the experience of mine in recruitment and the selection of the employees, the boarding and the induction activities of them in the organization helped to learn the different backgrounds of the employees and decide the processes of the operations in accordance to that. In this organization, I am able to learn advanced performance management and the methods for the reduction of the employee grievance or dissatisfaction.
Conclusion:
On a concluding, it can be stated that the impact of my job or more specifically the impact of the human resource managers in the modern business world is increasing with each day. The urge of the organizations in inheriting the scientific management inside the organizations is also observed to be increasing in a rapid speed. Hence the demand of the professionals for the post is significant. In response to that, I showed the way in which my service in that post helped me to develop and in addition to that, it also showed the importance of my studies and educations on the successful management of my job role in various organizations.
