Discuss about the Leadership for the Politics of Crisis Management.
The role of leadership is significant to develop and manage the alteration in any company by generating the appropriate atmosphere at the workplace in order to adopt the modification. There are different leadership dimension for managing the technology like transformational and transactional leadership (Bolman and Deal, 2017). Transactional leadership emphasizes on the modification in the technology and having technical competencies however he provides little attention to individuals and not much emphasis on problem-solving. I have gained my understanding that transformational leadership focuses on the requirement of technological alterations and involves the human relation aspects. This kind of leadership demonstrates his role as a pathfinder as well as communicates his vision by using skills. It also focuses on personal characteristics of leaders and his relationship with group members (Northouse, 2018).
When I was worked into an organization as a change agent then I have focused on a strategic change to the business unit. I promptly realized that there is a need for effective leadership style. Interest in change was driven by the immediate short-term demand of particular clients, managers or status quo.
During this time, I had managed a team who is accountable for coordinating technology regarding the project of the business unit. I also reported to the head manager of the business unit. I had also lengthy communication with my team members regarding issues of IT department. The communication resulted in reorganization where a new top head of IT was recruited in the team (Goleman, 2017). After that, I have to report to this new boss as an independent contributor. This change was an extremely complex phase for me but it was significant for me to shape my view of leadership.
The first article was based on ‘part of what Australians thinks is good leadership, might just be Anglo traits’. Through this article, I taught that certain leadership attributes such as being encouraging and trustworthy are viewed as the same manner in all cultures, however, there are other features that only spell leadership to an individual of Anglo-Celtic backgrounds. I have also increased my knowledge that leadership in China includes the combination of both Chinese historical and philosophical traditions like Confucianism and Daoism, and western thinking.
This understanding was beneficial for me to work in the china country. I have also increased my awareness that international project integrates different type of leadership linked with the culture like participative, human-oriented, autonomous, team-oriented, charismatic, value-based, and self-protective. I will apply this awareness to work with international project and diverse culture.
This article has also developed my understanding regarding view from Australia. In this way, it is evaluated that the Australian favored the individualism and egalitarianism or appreciation for visionary leadership but without charisma (Ward, 2016). I have also enhanced my comprehension that a leader with Anglo background might have developed inclusive leadership approach through extensive international experience and building their own understanding of how people from other culture perform. This understanding was beneficial for me to deal in Australia.
The second article has developed my understanding regarding Chinese business principles: guanxi, mianzi, and renqing. I have developed my understanding regarding Guanxi. In this way, it is observed that Guanxi initially focuses on building personal trust. After that, it emphasizes on the business relationship (IEDP, 2018). It is found that while an international company penetrates into China, the initial thing company needs to do is start with the network, meet individual and develop good Guanxi (Antonakis, and Day, 2017). I have learned that when the personal relationship is strong then, the company can trust what other parties will initiate to use contract and secures the promises.
This article has also enhanced my comprehension regarding Mianzi. In this way, it is stated that Mianzi is a social currency in China that focuses on the status of people in local societies. I have also observed that Renqing demonstrates the exchange of favor. I have also pointed out that Guanxi is significant in northern parts of China. It is more market-focused in the south. I have gained my understanding regarding an aspect of gatekeeping. In this way, it is opined that gatekeeping exists in when there is boundary amid two set of business networks (Heifetz, and Linsky, 2017). I have also observed that New Zealander can penetrate into the Chinese market of the foreign network but, New Zealand corporations generally do not go into China. This learning has developed my understanding to develop the business in China.
Through the Article 3, ‘Chinese Leadership: 5 Critical Differences with the West’, I have developed my understanding regarding Chinese leadership. In this way, I have learned different tips to develop effective relationships with the Chinese. I have also developed my knowledge that face has a depth meaning in China as compared to West. I have also observed that face is regarding respect and dignity and also related with the social role of the person. The second thing that I have learned is the notion of Guanxi. In this way, I have learned that notion of “guanxi” is a multifaceted idea as compared to the western concept of networking. This article has also developed my knowledge that China is first nation that focuses on the innovative idea in a setting of the group (Fairhurst, and Connaughton, 2014). This learning would be applied by me to invest in the Chinese market.
Through this article, I have also improved my understanding that time is money aspect is essential when dealing in China as it may produce a negative result for business. I have also increased my knowledge that Chinese take a longer time to make decisions. This article has also increased my knowledge that communication style of Chinese is indirect. I have also pointed out that for the Chinese, communication is regarding building association whereas, west is regarding the efficient exchange of data and completing tasks as soon as possible. This learning would be effective for me to develop the business in the Chinese market.
Leading a national crisis reaction is incredible accountability. Each member of the team was depended on me. I had too much of liabilities at the time of Ebola. At the time of Ebola, I was concern about my family that how I exposed my leadership skills to the front of my family members. It was very complicated for me to understand the situation of Ebola and manage each issue effectively. I was worried about this task but at the same time, I knew that it was a situation for which I had been preparing myself for my birth. Thus, I realized that this task was very essential for me caused it gave me an opportunity to demonstrates my leadership skills. After the completion of crisis, I got a chance to reflect further my learning from the Ebola crisis as that was a most challenging task for my life. From this, I gained my understanding towards many things that was new for me and some I had never imagined.
I observe that the teamwork is the best way to become a successful leadership. Each member of the group might play an imperative role. Due to the support of legislature and president, I controlled the Ebola crisis by building an effective structure. Through this, I was capable to deal with critical health issues by delegating the accountability to each member of the team. It could support to obtain a reliable result. The team member collaborates with each other and commits to controlling the crisis of the EVD containment (Renz, and Herman, 2016). I had oversight accountability for entire reactions and each team member directly reported to me several times a day as it would be managed by me in a systematic way. I needed to make my position on the top because many members are depended on me. I available all time to manage each aspect of reaction at the time of performing a complicated task. In this, there could be need of making a difficult decision towards different decisions about resolving the complexity of the problem (DuBrin, 2015). I also observed that crisis issues could be overcome without the support of the team members.
I observed that I have certain skills that are existed in me as it could be effective to inspire others behaviors in the least time and cost. I have three certain skills like initiative, team building and interpersonal, team building, and initiative skills that could support to easily inspire others for accomplishing their task. The initial skill could enable me to initiate for any activity and attain the specified goal (Covin, and Slevin, 2017). I have also team building skills that aid me to make an effective team. It could support to lead team member and obtain a reliable outcome. I also observed that my interpersonal skills support me to easily influence others in the least time and cost. Interpersonal skill facilitates me to effectively behave on the front of others, which aid to perform research.
From the biography, it is also found that there are many skills that needed to improve like communication, motivation, and decision-making skills (Johnston, and Marshall, 2016). I need to improve my communication skills for communicating about the significance of dog caring. In addition, it is also found that the motivation skills enable me to inspire consumer for dog caring at international level. In last, I also understood that the decision-making skills that could assist to make the feasible decision for the development of more schools and hospital in the upcoming period.
Topic 4 was beneficial for me to gain understanding regarding effective leader. In this way, leadership effectiveness demonstrates the supporting team member for increasing their productivity and improving job satisfaction. By using this lecture, I am able to measure the effectiveness of a leader. In this way, it is assessed that effectiveness could be measured by two modes such as objective data and subjective data (Priest, and Gass, 2017). I have observed that objective data is used to measure the work of leader by production, sales, and cost-cutting. This lecture has also increased my knowledge that subjective information is used to measure the work of leader through collecting judgment and perception of others regarding the effectiveness of a leader. This lecture has also increased my understanding of leadership behavior. In this way, I have observed that traits and skills should be considered into the behavior of the individual in order to become a good leader. This lecture has also gained my understanding regarding the behavior of leader and their impact on employees and members. This lecture was beneficial for me to adopt different situation. In this way, it is assessed that effective leaders adapt to the circumstances by selecting a method as per the unique situation at hand.
During this lecture, I have developed my comprehension about the setting of direction. In this way, it is evaluated that job of business is to interact clearly regarding where the business is existing, how and why the corporation will benefits if goals are attained. This learning would be applied by me as a leader in business in terms of setting the direction. I have also increased my knowledge with regards to high-performance standard. In this way, it is evaluated that effective leaders always lead team members in order to improve the performance of high standard. This learning would be applied by me to become effective leaders. This lecture has also increased my comprehension regarding the organization of collaboration. In this way, it is evaluated that behavior of leader should be consistent, regular and use a predictable structure in order to deal with team members (Tourish, 2014). I have also developed my awareness regarding the different style of leadership that should be used by an individual such as participative, entrepreneurial and autocratic.
By using the hofstead culture dimension, I have developed my knowledge regarding six dimensions that would be effective develop the deep understanding regarding Australian culture relative to Nepal.
I have gained my knowledge that Power Distance dimension indicates the facts that all people in societies are not equal. It also demonstrates the attitude of culture is different amongst us (Garrow, 2015). I have pointed that power distance is the extent by which less powerful staff of employees within nation accept and predicts that power is allocated unequally. I have also pointed out that inequality is endorsed by followers in society as compared to leaders.
From the chart, I have analyzed that Australian has scored low (36) on this dimension. I have generated my knowledge that hierarchy is developed for convenience within Australia. It is also evaluated that supervisors are always available and managers depend on individual workforces and team for their expertise (Komives, 2016). I have emphasized that both employees and managers predict to consult and the information is shared frequently. In addition, I have learned that communication could be direct, participative and informal.
I have also analyzed that Nepal has slightly high score i.e. 65 which indicates moderately hierarchical society. It means that an individual accepts hierarchical order by which everybody has a place and also no need to make further justification (Collinson, 2014). I have also learned that hierarchy shows the inherent inequalities and also depicts the centralization position. I have also observed that subordinates prospect to what should do and the ideal boss is a caring autocrat.
This dimension was beneficial for me to address the fundamental concern. I have observed that Individualism dimension shows the degree of interdependence that society keeps between its members. It also assesses whether self-image of people is defined with regards to ‘I’ or ‘we’ (Daft, 2014). I have also identified that an individual belongs to the group and take care of them to share loyalty in the group under the collectivist society. I have analyzed that Australia has obtained 90 scores in this dimension. It shows the high individualist culture. From this dimension, I have learned that people look after towards themselves and then their immediate families. Under the business world, workforces are projected to display initiatives and focuses on self-reliant (Raelin, 2016). I have also observed that hiring and promotion judgment relies on evidence and benefits of what an individual has done or can do within the exchange based work.
From the assessment, I have analyzed that Nepal has obtained low score i.e. 30, which shows the collectivistic society. It is evident that shows the long-term commitment of member and extended relationships. Loyalty in a collectivist culture is used as a principle that overrides different societal rules and regulations. The society enhances strong association by which each individual takes accountabilities for following members of their team (Shapiro, and Stefkovich, 2016). I have also learned that in collectivist societies, offense shows their loss of face and shame, as well as employer and employee relationships, is observed in moral terms like a family link. This dimension also indicates that promotion and hiring judgment addresses employee’s in the group along with management works in a group.
Masculinity dimension shows that the society will be driven by achievement, competition, and success. In this dimension, success is illustrated by best in the field and winners. This value system initiates in the school and continues all through one’s life both in work and leisure time. In contrast to this, feminine dimension shows the leading values in which society are caring for others and quality of life. I have observed that feminine society is one in which quality of life is the sign of success but it is not worthy in case of a crowd. The key issue here is what encourages an individual in society (Klenke, 2016). From the hofstead model, I have assessed that Australia has obtained 61 scores which are entailed as a Masculine society. In this way, it is evaluated that behavior at work, school, and play relies on the shared value that an individual should endeavor to best and the winner takes all. I have pointed out that Australian feel proud of their attainment and successes in life. It facilitates a basis for promotion and hiring judgment within an organization (Lussier, and Achua, 2015). I have also found out that conflicts could be determined at the individual extent and the objective is to win.
I have also assessed that Nepal got 40 score that is low. It is considered as a feminine society. In the feminine nation, the focus is on performing in order to live. Under this dimension, I have pointed out that managers make effort for people value equality, quality in their working life, solidarity, and consensus. It is also evaluated that conflicts are dealt with by negotiation and compromise (Sanders, 2017). In this dimension, incentives like flexibility and free time are favored by the individual. But, this dimension does not focus on the well-being of individuals.
From this dimension, I have developed my knowledge that uncertainty avoidance deals with the way that a society deals with the facts that the future can never be known. This uncertainty brings with it anxiety and diverse culture learns to deal with this anxiety in different manners. The extent to which individual of a particular culture may feel threatened due to the unknown occurrence and ambiguous (Johnson, 2017). Thus, I have learned that uncertainty avoidance reflects on creating beliefs and institutions to avoid these occurrences.
Through the chart, I have learned that Australia scores 51 on this dimension that shows it is very intermediate in this dimension. In opposed to this, Nepal got 40 scores in this dimension. It indicates that Nepal has a medium-low preference in order to avoid uncertainty. It also demonstrates that both experts and generalists are requisite for business. In this society, emotions and aggression are not demonstrated high in the society. I have also addressed that stress cannot be released in the activity. It is internalized (Sanders, 2017). Under this society, rules are more flexible, superegos are weaker and the world is demonstrated as generally benevolent. It is evaluated that people are moderately relaxed and not averse to take risks. As a result, there is a high degree of acceptance for new ideas, innovative products, and desires to try something new and different (Boin, Stern, and Sundelius, 2016).
I have developed my knowledge that long-term orientation dimension indicates how every society has to keep some association with its own past while dealing with the challenges of future and present. I have also observed that societies give priorities these two goals differently. I have also learned that normative societies that obtained a low score in this dimension prefer to keep time-honored traditions and norms during societal changes with the notion. I have learned that high score demonstrates that culture use pragmatic approach. It leads to efforts and thrifts in modern education and used as a way to ready for the future (Beck, and Cowan, 2014).
I have analyzed that Australia has obtained 21 scores on this dimension that shows the normative culture. I have learned that people in such communities have a strong concern regarding the development of absolute truth. People are normative in their thought. I have also pointed that normative societies show the high respect for customs, a relatively small propensity in order to save for the future and emphasizing on attainment of prompt outcome (Frohlich, and Oppenheimer, 2015). In contrast to this, it is assessed that there is presently no score for Nepal in the dimension of Long-Term Orientation.
I have also developed my knowledge that one of the key challenges that deal by a person is humanity. Indulgence dimension shows the degree by which people meet with each other. I have also identified that indulgence is the extent to which an individual try to control their urges and expectations. In this way, the relatively weak factor is called indulgence and relatively strong control is alias restraint. Australia has high score i.e. 71 in the indulgent nation. People in this society are categorized by a high score in indulgence. It also shows the willingness to comprehend their urges and expectations regarding enjoying life and having fun (Sanders, 2017). They also hold the favorable attitude and have a tendency with regards to optimism. In addition, an individual place a higher extent of importance on leisure time and also spends more time on it (Klenke, 2016). In opposed to this, it is stated that there is currently no score for Nepal in this dimension.
I have developed my knowledge that a robust leadership network aids to provide access to data, people, and resources. I have identified that three type of networking is essential for leadership career. These are the /operational, strategic and personal network. It is assessed that the purpose of operational networking is to make sure the coordination and cooperation between individuals who have to know and reliance one another in order to attain their immediate tasks (Daft, 2014). This networking was applied by me in terms of managing the operational procedure. I have also built my understanding that a personal network can be a safe space for developing the personal life and also facilitate the basis for strategic networking. This learning was beneficial for me to use the personal network in my leadership career. I have also increased my knowledge regarding strategic networking. In this way, I have // learned that strategic networking leads to leaders into a set of liaisons and data sources that collectively exemplify the power to attain the personal and organizational objectives. Thus, understanding /of these leadership networks would be beneficial for me to apply it in the business. As a result, it would be significant for me to become an effective leader in the future.
I have generated my knowledge regarding the relationship between leadership and innovation. In this way, I have learned that there are three people management fundamentals that may use to produce the building block of an innovative company. It is evaluated that an initial phase is to formally combine the innovation into strategic management plan of senior leaders to a high extent (Lussier, and Achua, 2015). I have also analyzed that innovation can be not only motivated but also tracked, organized and measured as a core component in growth aspiration of the company. Secondly, I have observed that leaders can make better use of current talent for innovation without executing disrupting change initiatives. It can use the circumstances that permit the dynamic innovation network in order to flourish and emerge (Komives, 2016). Finally, I have pointed out that leader can take an explicit step in order to enhance the innovation culture as per trust between workforces. In such culture, an individual should understand that their ideas are valued (Johnston, and Marshall, 2016). In this way, I have generated my knowledge that trust is safe to express the ideas and oversee uncertainty collectively.
I have developed my different skills by gaining understanding about leadership such as innovation skills, leadership skills, and management skills. I observed that the leadership skill could enable an individual to lead the team member in the least time. I gained my understanding towards leadership traits and characteristics. Though this, I also gained my understanding towards the skills that I needed to improve like communication, decision making, and motivation skills.
