Media richness theory is a type of theory which provides us a framework that is used for describing the ability of the communication media to produce the information without any loss of resources such as video conferencing that can communicate the gestures that is richer than email. The media richness theory thus can say that for more ambiguous task, the richer form of media is needed. This theory states that the communication media differ from each other in the ability based on that they can easily communicate a much complex message (Etudo, Weistroffer and Al-Abdullah 2015).
The characteristics of the media richness theory includes the:
Media richness theory states that the managers have to select the ways of communication based on the equality of the richness of the medium (Klitmøller and Lauring 2013). This theory includes a system in which the axes went from low vocals to high vocals. In other words, the channels of communication are to be selected that are based on the type of the communication. Organizations that are distributed globally with employees in different time zones face challenges with communication and coworking. As a result technology tools are utilized in order to facilitate proper communication between the virtual teams. Use of richer media among the virual teams decreases the perceived notions regarding unnoticed contributions of team members or social loafing. The social presence is a type of model which allows the communicators for experiencing others as being present with the communication of the participants. The tasks which involve the interpersonal skills, as for example resolving the negotiation, and also tasks such as exchange of the information requires less presence. There is another model related to the media richness theory that is being made particularly for the selection of a proper medium. It is also known as the social influence model (Tseng et al. 2017). Thus different organizations used to perceives a media that is different and this result in the variation of the media.
The current assignment focuses on the concept of group working which requires effective collaboration within a team. In this respect, a number of skills are required for working efficiently within a team which has been further described. Some of these decision making, communication skills which help in troubleshooting the problem areas. With the advent of digitization there is less usage of face to face interaction and the teams across the organizations are more dependent on the digital tools for communicating efficiently. In my personal experience I have come across a number of benefits offered by the digital communication interfaces. Firstly, the advocacy of such methods saves the time and the cost of the organizations in arranging meetings and seminars. In this respect a number of communication methods exist such as the Social Presence theory, media richness theory. I personally believe and use the attributes of the media richness theory in communicating with my team. The media richness theory uses the power and the ability of media for communicating across organizations. There are a number of benefits of the media richness theory such as the visual interface allows for wider and better interaction with the team members by understanding their emotions through their facial expressions.
Here, the DIEP framework could be used which helps in the assessment of the personal strengths and weaknesses in communicating effectively through means of digital technology. The DIEP framework could be divided into – Description of the objective (D), interpretation of the events (I), evaluation of self learning (E), planning the application of the framework (P).
D- Communicating across the virtual interfaces helped me in understanding the thoughts and emotions of my respective team members better. However, there are a number of limitations which hampered my performance in working and interacting effectively with the team. Some of them are poor social presence which often results in me missing important points of the conversation.
I-The purpose of this activity was to establish a much wider communication platform where the team members working across different geographical locations of an organization could interact effectively with each other. In my opinion the implementation of the method helps in maintaining a swift flow of the work process. The leads generated through the process of the organization could be communicated instantly with each other.
Therefore, the incorporation of such a method would help me in understanding the requirements of my clients better. Though this, quick services could be delivered to the customers along with setting up faster trouble shooting networks. According to me the incorporation of such methods would help me in up scaling my communication skills. Additionally, I can use my experience I to similar situations to communicate in a more transparent manner with my teammates and the fellow customers. I believe the importance of the teamwork and it can bring the clients by the quality of the task, its completion and achievement of the goal.
My strengths as a team member are I am having a good communication skill, good work ethics, skills of planning a work, flexible during work, skills to solve the problem, can work effectively in team and disciplined. My weaknesses as a team member are I am too much impatient, very much reluctant towards delegate tasks, too much cautious and uncompromising.
Through the group work I was able to know about how to work on the problems, how the answer the questions about the reading or how to discuss the case study. I personally believe and use the attributes of the media richness theory in communicating with my team. I was able to learn about the content at a deeper level which can be equalized with the understanding. As a team member I do not allow any delay in completing the tasks. I always used to keep an eye on my other team members that are they working efficiently or not.
I learned that a good communications between the members and the discipline are too important for making a team to work more efficiently and united together. Besides the mutual respects, understanding and the trust are very essential in achieving a common goal. When the people will learn to be appreciated and get support from the efforts of each other’s. The individual gets highly provoked and stimulated in improving the efficiency of work. This is the main thing of the teamwork which I used to like more.
This will make the tasks to be done perfectly on time. According to me the incorporation of such methods would help me in up scaling my communication skills. But I used to get irritated very easily and bring unnecessary tension among the teammates which affects their emotions very badly and the work efficiency of the members gets reduced. I powerfully believe the importance of the teamwork and the astonishment it can bring for increasing the quality of the task, its completion and achievement of the goal.
