After being introduced to the topic of Millennials in the Workplace, it is best to say that the workplace should adapt to accommodate the needs and ideals of the millennials because they are the future of this planet right? They have proven to be the most educated generation despite experiencing hard times. They still face criticism from their elders because of their work ethic. Although they seem to all be lazy and not interested in working, many millennials are not at all like that.
They just have different values in life. A balanced work-life with free time is most important to them. Imagine if you had the personality of a child stuck in an adult’s body? This is the plight of most Millennials. And you’re just lying in bed pondering why you have to wake up at 5:30 in the morning; be ready by 6:15 and then drive for about fifteen minutes to an hour to a standard business location. That would seem like a lackluster life void of excitement.
The problem with the older generations is that they judge the millennials’ work ethic instead of trying to mentor and instruct them. It would be great if the work ethic could be redefined as the belief of being able to have an equal balance between work and free time. Because of this, the older generations hold the belief that millennials are the entitled generation.
Every successive generation has been labeled the entitled generation by the preceding generation. This is attributed to the hard work of the previous generation which has resulted in prosperity for the following generation.
The lives of our parents were greatly different from our grandparents, and their parents before them. The young workers indeed do expect more, but we are all responsible for the attitudes and mindsets that have resulted from an abundance of convenience. But believe it or not, there are actually some benefits to millennials being entitled. Entitled people feel a stronger drive for achievement. If you feel like you deserve to be the top salesperson in your organization, you’re going to work harder to make that title a reality. You might also hold out for a job that better suits your talents and expertise, rather than taking one with responsibilities that are beneath you. As a result, you’ll work harder and be more productive. In fact, if bosses and managers could find new innovations to keep the millennials engaged, millennials would become more efficient in the workplace.
Engagement is one of the biggest components that millennials insist on at work. Training managers armed with this knowledge can use it to their advantage by focusing on employee experience. The goal of employee experience is to shift millennials’ relationship with work from considering it a material acquisition where satisfaction decreases over time, to an experiential acquisition, where the anticipation of going to work is exciting and job satisfaction escalates over time. For managers, this discovery should spark important questions as they reflect on their own engagement strategies. In order for millennials to enact success at work, leaders need to combine and put into practice a mentioned strategy. On the other hand, millennials do need to find the reality that the workplace will not always work in their favor.
If you’re one to argue that today’s workers are lazy, then you’re probably in accordance with other outside viewers. Rather than millennials wait for other people to do their work, young workers need to see better opportunities in other organizations. The reality is that we are increasingly moving away from manual labor and toward a service economy. We may not be using our hands as often, but we are still using our minds. And where we once drudged in the fields and mines and worked in the factories as our only source of viable employment, today we toil away in massive corporate campuses in front of bright screens. The rise of casual work is just the beginning of workplace flexibility, but the concept still has to be improved if we want individuals to maintain stable employment and a decent living. In spite of this, for there to be satisfactory and effectiveness in the workplace, you must always have room for modification to increase your employee status. Nevertheless, flexibility should be crucial in the workplace layout in order to accommodate the rising millennial generation. With this modification, you give your company the best chance to retain millennials and lessen employee turnover.
Essentially, there should be a balance between workplace adaptation and accommodation to the needs and ideals of millennials. Due to the change in labor from hands on to service, modification of the current work system is mandatory. Just because it has been done the same way over many years, does not mean that it is the only way. Likewise, millennials must also be reminded that their way, thoughts, and ideas are not the only way. Millennials need structure in the workplace as well. The older workplace environment provides this structure. The blending of the two workplace settings can prove advantageous to the millennial generation. There are always things that can be learned from those who came before you. Sharing of concepts and gradual changes will benefit the millennials by offering them an opportunity to meld the two workplace settings together. As a result, both will get what they want and be satisfied.
