Nowadays, students not just study but also learn other things through extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities are those that are not directly related to the general purpose of school education which is to teach students academically per se it teaches students variety of things that later on becomes their hobbies or interest like learning sports, cooking and etc. Extracurricular activities is said to have many good impacts on a student’s life whether it is academically or socially.
Joining this activities make a student seem well rounded in knowing variety of things and responsible in managing their time wisely.
Also, it bring students more closer to each other because these activities open up their social lives which later on form bonds based on common interest. These also serve as a break of the students from their lessons for what they learn from these activities is of their own interest. It is said that those students who joins in extracurricular activities perform better in school than those who are not.
The researcher chose this topic for she is interested in wanting to know the effects of extracurricular activities to the academic performance of those high school students who are part of her research study.
The main objective of this study is to know the effects of extracurricular activities to the academic performance of the 2nd year high school students of Village School of Parkwoods. This study aims to answer the following questions:

This study focuses on gathering information to all 2nd year high school students of Village School of Parkwoods in academic year 2012-2013.
Importance of Study
This chapter presents the related literature and studies that the researcher was able to read in different libraries, books, magazines, articles, newspaper and studies.
Extra-curricular activities are those which are not related to the school’s academic program but are important for the holistic development of a student. These activities allow students not only to train and nurture the skills they currently have, but also to unearth undiscovered talents and stir up new interests.1 Extracurricular activities that involve music, the arts, and sports can bring shy children out of their shells. It helps kids learn new skills, become more responsible, learn the importance of health and wellness, form new friendships and to develop a child’s confidence.
Many extracurricular activities have proven to be beneficial in building and strengthening academic achievement, even if the activities are not obviously related to academic subjects (Marsh & Kleitman, 2002, para. 9). “A number of studies revealed that students participating in extracurricular activities did better academically than students who did not participate” (Marsh & Kleitman, 2002, para. 7). Researchers have particularly studied the relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance in adolescents. One study found that “adolescents who participated in extracurricular activities reported higher grades, more positive attitudes toward school.” (Darling, Caldwell, & Smith, 2005, para. 1)
The theoretical framework shows the researchers determine first the effects participating extracurricular activities to the academic performance of the 2nd year high school students in Village School Of Parkwoods SY 2011-2012.
Low grades – Students who does not participate in extracurricular activities.
This chapter presents the research design and procedures to be used in the study. It will discuss the research design, the instrument, sampling design of population and respondents.
The Descriptive survey was used in this study. Descriptive survey describes with emphasis current issues or conditions as a response to the statement of the problem, participating extracurricular activities could have effects on the academic performance of the selected Village School of Parkwoods’ students.
The researcher will ask permission from the teachers, advisers of the school to allow the students to answer the questionnaires. The answering of the questionnaires will be done in the classroom. The researcher’s questionnaire is a survey that is composed of the most basic profile of the respondents. In addition to this are some related questions about the research topic, including their academic averages.
Self-made questionnaire are composed of questions that will be used to measure the study habits of students who participate and doesn’t participate in extracurricular activities. The researcher will conduct some interview and surveys to prove the certain topic. The researcher may get some respondents to get some information that can be great basis for the research. These questionnaires were used to determine the effects participating extracurricular activities to the academic performance of the 2nd year high school students in Village School Of Parkwoods SY 2011-2012.
The 25 2nd year highschool students who are enrolled during the school year 2012-2013 at Village School of Parkwoods which is comprised of the total population will be the sample size of the study.
