What are your interests in this negotiation? (100 words)

Answer:  For the interest of community people, Camphorwood hospital must initiate contribution towards promoting health and preventive measures for health care of the people, as alternative services. It must enhance and increase the outpatient facility. It must establish a health care with day-care facilities. Another point of interest is to develop a team of trained and skilled health professionals who would provide mobile services such as governing diagnostic tests by travelling around the community. Since the hospital is the health hub of the community, therefore, the community people consider the hospital as their own, and it must deliver health care services for the wellbeing of the people similar to other local hospitals.

What are your negotiating partner’s interests? (100 words)

Answer: Due to its location and ever-increasing demands of the community people, the hospital is facing financial problems. It is also difficult for the hospital to recruit new practitioners from various fields, and even hard to maintain the present staff of the hospital. Therefore, the existing board members of the Camphorwood hospital and chairman of Local health district have announced their plan of building a new health care service building. From the hospital, nearby 15 blocks away a site has been procured, on that site they have planned eight apartments for visiting physicians, new medical and nursing staff which will also have a staff parking area. A shuttle bus service will be provided to the hospital grounds from this new service centre.       

What do you want to ask your partner about his/her interests? (50 words)

Answer: How will the new medical centre benefit our people or community? Will it be easily accessible or will it work on referral system? We, community people are already facing numerous health care problems due to scarcity of medical practitioners. There is long queue for appointment even for basic medical care, and general practitioners if accessible are extremely expensive.

What options could you propose to meet your key interests and theirs? (100 words)

Answer: As a leader of CHAG, we would propose common interests that would be in favour for both the parties. There must be replacement of the Local Health District Board with elected members from the community. There must be a cent percent increase in outpatient facilities. Our community people are not against the new building but we desire that in the newly acquired site for developing medical centre; a health centre and day-care facility should be established. We have tried to contact the director to arrange for a meeting so that we can discuss on how hospital and community can work together to resolve the prevailing issues. We have not received any response to our letter, thus, we propose to replace the director by one of the selected member from our community.

What standards or criteria could you use to decide among several possible options? (50 words)

Answer: The ‘objective’ criteria depending upon the facts would be used to decide among various options. For example, by the construction of new building and recruitment of new medical staff, will this solve our (community) demand for medical care? We are assuming that our negotiating partners are aware of the criteria. Therefore, to meet the demand of community, health centre and day-care facility is of utmost importance and need of the current situation.

What interpersonal issues or difficulties might emerge in this negotiation? If you do encounter some difficulty, how could you “separate the people from the problem”? (100 words)

Answer: In this negotiation, as per CHAG demand to replace the director might invite some issues from the Local Health District Board and may result in interpersonal problems based on acquiring position or competing to be a member of board. Our new elected member of the community might face problems in future while handling the position. At that time, the present director might suggest to resolve the issues from her personal past experiences.

By emphasizing on solutions to our health care issues we can maintain good working relationship. Therefore, we will be focussing on the opportunities that new established health care building will deliver and we would drop our demand for director replacement. A healthy working atmosphere is of utmost importance where problems can be heard and solutions can be derived. Our main target is to avail optimal health care for the people of our community.

What is your BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement)? (25 words)

Answer: Our BATNA is, the board members should improve and expand its outpatient facility to cent percent either in the new building or in the existing hospital.

Based on the analysis of your BATNA, what is the minimum you would be willing to accept? (50 words)

Answer: The minimum acceptable demand is outpatient facility should be enhanced so that people can easily access to basic medical care. In addition to outpatient facility, it is quite obvious that there will be increase in the number of physicians and nursing staff with respect to the increase in number of patients.
