The organizational behavior is concerned with the behavior of the individuals and groups within a social or organizational entity (Miner 2015). The organizational dynamics is concerned with improvement of productivity and enhance the job satisfaction. I am a 20-year-old and I am employed in a coffee shop. I have identified three issues in my workplace, which would be discussed in this report. The first issue is the concerned with the lack of team work in my team. The teamwork is important component in the organization to maximize the productivity of the team. It also helps in better communication and better satisfaction rates among the customers. The second issue concerns with the leadership style. The leaders are the ones who guide the team and are considered as the “torchbearers” of the organizations. The leadership styles need to be altered based on the organizational needs and the needs of the employees. The third issue is concerned with the lack of motivation at work. It is important that the employees go through increased levels of job satisfaction and this is possible only through motivation.
I have experienced that there is lack of teamwork in our department, which creates issues in giving effective delivery of customer service. There have been certain tiffs between the two members of the team, which has led to ego clashes. This has caused communication barriers between not only the two members, but also with other members of the team. This has caused a reduction in the team output and this issue has affected the performance of the whole team.
My coffee shop has adequate leadership; however, the senior management has displayed autocratic type of leadership. They do not consult the team while making important decisions. There are some experienced team members in our team, who can share their useful experience, if asked for. However, they are not even asked for giving their suggestions. This attitude of the management is not acceptable to some members of the management, including me. I may not know much about the organization since I am young, however I like the feeling when someone asks me for my opinion.
I have zero levels of motivation at the workplace. This is due to the fact that I have low pay, which is not sufficient to support my family. I feel that I am underpaid as compared to my friends. This makes me unable to concentrate on my work and hence reduces my productivity levels. I do not feel the urge to interact with my team or make the customers happy. I feel bad that I cannot contribute to the betterment of my organization but since I am working hard I wish to get a good salary.
The team work can be well illustrated with the help of Tuckman’s teamwork theory (Warrick 2016). This model is significant as it understands the fact that the initial stages of the group are not fully functional or fully formed. This theory states that there are four stages of team development such as –
Forming- This is considered as the initial stage of the team development during which the team members are busy finding their own places in the team and interact with each other in order to know them in a better way (Warrick 2016).
Storming- In this stage, the people have started viewing each other as the team members and they may challenge each other as well as the team leader regarding the type of tasks they are doing and how they can be done (Warrick 2016). There can be confrontations and conflicts in this stage.
Norming- In this phase, the team members would come together and try to develop processes as well as establish ground rules about the work performed by the team. There can be growing togetherness in this team (Warrick 2016).
Performing- This is considered as the phase in which the teams would focus on the tasks as well as team relationships so that there can be combined synergy.
In my organization, my team is in the storming stage and hence there is a high probability of conflicts. There are some employees who feel that there is a particular way of doing the tasks while there are others who believe that there is no best way to approach a task (Warrick 2016). This often leads to confrontations in the society and this may affect the team spirit. There are instances when the existing team members start to challenge each other and due to this reason, they are unable to fulfill the organizational objectives.
The Traits theory considers that the people are either born or they are made with different characteristics which would make them excel in their leadership roles (Chemers 2014). The leaders have intrinsic qualities such as sense of responsibility, creativity, intelligence and other qualities which are applied. In my organization, the leaders have dominating type of traits which helps them to take decisions without consulting the team (Chemers 2014). They are self-obsessed and hence believe that their decisions are the best and would fulfill the organizational objectives.
The two-factor theory of motivation focuses on the two kinds of factors that focus on the employee satisfaction as well as employee motivation (Tims and Bakker 2014). The motivator factors are concerned with the parameters that motivate the employees to work hard and hence enhance their satisfaction levels. The hygiene factors are concerned with the dissatisfaction of the employees, which is caused due to subsequent loss of motivation levels. In my experience, I am demotivated to work in the workplace due to the low package offered and hence I do not enjoy my work (Tims and Bakker 2014). I do not feel recognized in the workplace and I feel that it would affect my career progression to a great extent. I am more attracted to the hygiene factors and hence suffer from low motivation levels.
I should try to look at the three different kinds of behaviors and try to find practical solutions to the problems. I should try to look at the different issues at the organization and try to give practical solutions to them. The team work can be improved by taking different initiatives. There should be clear counselling between the members of the same team. It should identify different interpersonal issues and strive to solve the same. A culture of prosperous relationships should be encouraged (Carroll and Buchholtz 2014). It is important to identify clear goals for the team members so that it is possible to delete all possible sources of conflict. It is also important to foster different kind of activities which would improve the team bonding. A social activity can increase the team bonding, which can be in the form of a cup of coffee at the nearby café (Carroll and Buchholtz 2014).
I should also try to improve the leadership style in my organization. I should try to talk with the senior management and make them believe the fact that it is important to consult the team members for deriving suitable decisions. There should be practical demonstrations of the same. I would conduct mock decision making activity that would convince the leaders that a democratic style of leadership is important in the long run. The leaders should be engaged in critical thinking and I would present them with successful case studies that would motivate the leaders to change their decision-making approach.
I should also focus on improving my self-motivation level, which would increase my productivity levels. I should make myself understand that I am gaining work experience in my current job in spite of having low compensation package. This would help me to build a strong resume and apply to the potential jobs in the future. I should also try to understand that work experience would pay me well in the future. It is important that I listen motivational speeches of great successful personalities. I can get the videos from websites such as YouTube, which would help me to alter my thought process in a better way. I should try to focus more on my career objective and hence try to keep my motivation level up.
Conclusion
The organizational behavior is concerned with how the individuals behave in an organization. This report has focused on the behavioral aspects of a 20-year-old employed in a coffee shop. I have identified three organizational behavior issues. The first one comprises of the lack of team work displayed in the team. The second issue is concerned with the inadequate leadership style displayed by the senior management. The third issue revolves around the fact that I suffer from lack of motivation at work. The critical reflection on these points have been done in this report. The relevant theories are discussed such as Tuckman’s team work theory, Traits theory and motivation theory. The recommendations section has provided with some practical solutions for the purpose of solving the identified behavioral issues.
