Discuss about theParenting and Family Issues for Malaysian Family Context.
In the Malaysian family context, families are considered as an important unit of the society and moreover, families in Malaysia are tends to maintain a close relationship with their extended families than the families in the Western Societies (Shloim et al., 2015).However, in the industrialised area in Malaysia, it becomes difficult to follow joint family patterns and that is the reason nuclear family exists. However, in case of controlling their children behaviour, parents in Malaysia are facing major challenges in the present days.
Malaysia is considered as a multi religious country, with three major ethnic groups resides in the country that includes Malay, Chinese and the Indian. In the communities of Malaysia, two main types of parenting are mainly preferred by the parents in the Malay communities that include authoritarian and the lenient parenting style (Masud, Thurasamy & Ahmad, 2015). In case of the lenient parenting styles, parents do not give much importance on their children and hence that results in the failure in lives for the children. This has been one of the major issues parents are facing in the present days, as their children are not been able to succeed in their lives. Most importantly, the children are also not connected with their parents and this type of children with their notorious deed causing problem to the overall community (Ang et al., 2017). In the present day, parents are facing major problems and challenges in controlling the behaviour of their children, mainly with major issues related to smoking, theft, drug addiction and more. As per the report, it has been stated that parents mainly tend to control their children by exerting too much of control over them, and thus the children tend to move away from their parents and moves into wrong path such as stealing, getting addicted to drugs and more (Yusuf & Sim, 2017). For this reason, parents are not being able to control their children’s behaviour and thus facing major challenges. Apart from that, children in the present days are involved in misleading deeds such as illegal bike and bicycle riders that have cause death to many children. Parents are facing challenges and are over stressed in dealing with these types of children, as they do not tend to listen to their parents. For example, in the case of the Mat Lajak children, they do not listen to their parents and commit mischievous and notorious deeds that sometimes bring their lives at risk. As most parents in Malaysia are tend to exert authoritative type of parenting, where all the standards are set and the children are not allowed to question their parents (Garcia & Santiago, 2017). This has resulted that the independence of the children are limited and they are not able to make their own decision. This increased suicide of children and running away from home. Parents should need to understand the right and correct way to guide their children, so that they should not follow the wrong path.
Conclusion
From the assignment, it could be concluded that in the present days, Malaysian families are facing major challenges in controlling the behaviour of their children. As, parents tend to implement strict rules over their children by setting certain goals and standards, therefore the children are not being able to make their own decision and thus that result in children committing suicide and running away from homes. Sometimes children while mixing with other children involve in wrong deeds that include smoking, drug addiction and thus they are not being able to succeed in their lives.
Parenting has been considered as one of the most difficult jobs around the world as different children have different behaviours and moreover, parents exercise different styles of parenting as per their choice and culture (Sangawi, Adams & Reissland, 2015). However, culture plays an important role in determining the attachment level parents feel with their children, such as to what extent parents would be close to their children. The essay would elucidate on different styles of parenting, and the most appropriate style of parenting according to parents.
In Malaysia, as there are different types of people from different cultures, many types of parenting exit in Malaysia in controlling the behaviour of their children. For, instance, in case of dealing with the Mat Lajak group in Malaysia, parents are implementing different parenting styles, so that they should be aware of their deeds. However, in the context of Malaysia, parents in Malaysia mainly follow four different styles of parenting that includes authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglective (Gouveia et al. 2016). In the case of Authoritarian parenting style, parents are considered as the most disciplined parents. In order to raise their children properly they maintain certain standards and goals that should be followed by their children. Moreover, in this style of parenting communication is mainly one way, as children are not allowed to question on the standards and rules. In Authoritative parenting style, the demanding and responsive are both high as parents are considered warm and nurturing (Guyer et al. 2015). Even the communication between children and parents are transparent and children within this parenting style tend to be happy. In permissive style of parenting, the parents tend to set fewer rules and do not tend to disappoint their children. These types of children mainly have less self-control and are mainly egoistic (Guyer et al. 2015). The last parenting style is the neglective style where parents do not want to involve in their children lives and thus it result in impulsive children.
Being a parent, I would like to enforce authoritative parenting style on my child, as this would help me to control the behaviour of my child and at the same time, my child will feel free to share everything with me. Moreover, with the implementation of this parenting style, will tend my son to be more independent and thus it would also increase his confidence level. In case of tackling issues like the Mat Lajak, I would tend certain rules regarding the avoidance of the racing with bicycles and would also explain the reason why it should not be followed. I believe that, explaining the reason in a proper way would be effective. With proper reasoning about their misdeeds, my child would able to realize his mistake and accordingly would not commit such type of mistakes twice.
Conclusion
From the above conclusion it could be concluded that the styles of parenting vary and differ according to the culture and tradition where the children are raised. Moreover, the four common types of parenting style are mainly followed throughout the world and especially in Malaysia. The four major types of parenting include authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and the neglective. As a parent, my choice of parenting include authoritative style, through which I would set certain rules and explain the reason to my child, so that he could understand it and should adhere by it. In this way, I can also control the behaviour of my child and this would also help him to be independent and responsive.
Creativity plays an important role in raising children more effectively as this would help the children to create new ideas by imagining various things. In order to promote creative behaviour among children, parents should encourage their children and accordingly should provide proper environment (Sangawi, Adams & Reissland, 2016). The task would mainly focus on the issues related to the Mat Lajak group and the consequences related to it. The thesis statement is that mat lajak group are posing serious threat on the communities in spite of having creative natures, and their activities should be stopped.
In the present days in Malaysia, there has been an increase in activities of the Mat Lajak group in Malaysia that resulted in negative impact on the overall community. The Mat Lajak group who are recognized as the creative youngsters are posing serious threat to themselves and to the communities in Malaysia. The Mat Lajak are mainly involved in motorcycle and bicycle race in public space, and beside that they are also involved in doing variety of stunts in the public place (Chegg.com, 2018). As per the report, it has been stated that eight teenagers from the aged fourteen to seventeen lost their lives while showing bicycle stunts in the public road, when a car ploughed over them. After the incident, the mat lajak children are again trying to make a comeback with different stunts and are not indented to learn anything from their past experiences (Pentz et al. 2015). It has also been stated that though they are tend to be creative, but showing stunts in public places puts their lives on danger. This activity of the Mat Lajak group needs to be stopped, so that they could invest their creativity on other productive things (Chang & Chen, 2015).
Although there have been reports that the Mat Lajak group are creative youngsters and by showcasing their talents on public pace through bicycle stunts they are increasing their creativity. The numbers of Mat Lajak group are more in Johor, and they tend to perform the activities mainly in the public place. However, the Mat Lajaks are not the creative youngsters, they are indulging their lives in danger and for this, and the parents of such teenage should impose certain measures to stop them. In order to stop them, the Government started arresting the cyclist and as per the report, 22 cyclists were arrested and among them two were girls (Runco, 2014). Most of their parents also said that they do not want their children to come out of the jail and they should be put behind the bars. Under the Road Transport Act 1987, many cycles of the Mat lajak groups were seized away, so that they could not be able to perform such dangerous stunts. Hence, it has been stated that the Mat Lajak group are not exactly creative youngsters, as they are simply putting their lives on danger. Moreover, in terms of creativity, they could show their talents and creativity in various other things.
Conclusion
The essay sheds light on the major context that the Mat Lajak group do not show any creativity by doing bicycle race and stunts in the public places. By doing this, they are putting their lives in danger and thus it also increases stress of the parents. Stunts are not creative things as reported by the Government. As parents are facing major challenges in understanding their children behaviour, and for that reason when their children got arrested they want them to stay behind the bars. Therefore, it could be concluded that the Mat Lajak group are posing serious threat to the communities and showing stunts are not consider as creative things.
