Discuss about the Personal Leadership Model for Control the Behaviors.
Leadership can be described as an influential process through which the individual can regulate, shape, change, and control the behaviors, attitudes, as well as, the performance of the group members or followers. Hence, leadership is the vital element for the success of any task or organization as it enables the individual to guide and influence others for the successful and efficient completion of the task without any forced action. To become an effective leader it is very important that a healthy relationship is developed between the leader and his/her followers, which is characterized by the social and interpersonal interaction (Allio, 2009). An effective leader is the one who is capable of turning the weaknesses of the team members into their strengths and motivates them at every step of the task. For becoming an effective leader it is very important to have a certain set of qualities and skills that allow the individual to demonstrate his/her leadership in the most efficient manner. A good leader is capable of analyzing his own strengths and weaknesses and tries to convert his negative qualities into positive ones. As it is said that the effective leader leads by an example, it is very important to analyze one’s strengths and weaknesses (Schafer, 2010).
Personal leadership is very important as it allows individuals to give direction to their life, as well as, provides you the path for leading in the right direction. It enables the individual to develop the skill and ability for determining the main motto of the life and how to achieve it. The development of the personal leadership model is helpful in developing the skills and qualities of leadership both at personal and corporate level. Personal leadership model is the way to lead, direct, and take action. The knowledge of personal leadership, as well as, development of personal leadership model provides the correct means and tools for achieving the desired goals and overcoming the weaknesses present in the individual (Hassan, Asad, and Hoshino, 2016). As there is not only one method of leading and demonstrating the qualities of leadership, different individuals develop their own models and styles of leadership. But to develop the personal leadership model it is very important that the individual has a clear picture or reflection of his own qualities and drawbacks. The analysis of one’s strengths and weaknesses is very an important parameter that guides the person to develop the required skills and for working on his limitations, as well as, for the development of the personal leadership model (Shriberg, Shriberg and Lloyd, 2002).
The personal leadership model developed by me is focused on PPPI, i.e., purpose, performance, personality, as well as, integrity. Where purpose can be described as the source of motivation for doing something, performance is an action of achieving that purpose. On the other hand, personality is something that forms the distinguishable character of an individual through the combination of several qualities and characteristics. Moreover, integrity is the distinct virtue of holding the high standards of one’s moral and ethical behavior (Palanski and Yammarino, 2009). While, the purpose defines the values, mission, and vision of the leadership, performance includes the effective change, strategic implications, achievements, and outcomes of the leadership on achieving the desired goal. Further, integrity and personality evaluation is very important for analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the individual and for developing those qualities and skills in the most ethical and competent manner (Azuka, 2009). The purpose, performance, personality and integrity are very important for developing leadership qualities as the effective leader is the one who possesses the clear vision, goal, desired skills, strategy and ethical values for the completion of the task in the most desirable manner.
The main organizing idea behind the development of the personal leadership model is to enhance my personality skills and to overcome the limitations that restrict me to become an effective leader. For a better demonstration of one’s leadership qualities, it is very important to communicate with the followers or team members. The performance of the leader is very much influenced by the way he/she communicates with others. The analysis of my personality and qualities made me realize that I lack communication skills. I feel very uncomfortable in communicating with others especially in a group or when a large number of people are present.
Hence, for demonstrating my leadership qualities it is very important that I communicate in an effective way with my team members as communication skills influences the performance of the individual as a leader. To clearly keep one’s thoughts and ideas in front of the team members is the important quality of the leader. Moreover, I am very introvert kind of personality and tends to remain away from people. This is the major limitation of my personality that I need to overcome, as a managing group of people in the most efficient manner is the basic trait of the effective leader. Having strong willpower and influential characteristics are not only desired qualities of the effective leader. To perform the task and completing the purpose of the task in the most integral manner is also very important for an effective demonstration of leadership qualities and skills. The goal oriented skills and professional integrity are the important components of effective leadership (Smith, 2009). Hence, by developing this personal leadership model, I will be able to overcome my limitations and will lead to the development of certain desired qualities in which I am lacking.
An effective leader possesses the combination of traits, qualities, and skills that allow him/her to demonstrate his leadership in the most effective manner. Self-awareness, emotional intelligence, professional integrity, determination, self-regulation, effective communication, sociability, enthusiasm, dominance, emotional stability, self-assurance, and confidence are the important traits of an effective leader (Robinson-Walker, 2010). Moreover, the skill of communicating with others in the most effective way, strategic thinking, delegation and organization of the tasks, planning of the action, risk management, charismatic attitude, problem-solving and capability of making decisions at the time of crisis or problems are the skills that are present in the effective leader. Further, monitoring the performance of the team members and motivating, as well as, directing them to achieve the desired goal are the necessary tasks of a leader (Kempster, Jackson, and Conroy, 2011). Hence, the core values that are being emphasized by my personal leadership model includes vision, mission, values of leadership, honesty, integrity, effective communication, goal orientation, self-regulation, self-awareness, openness, hard work, moral values, and development of healthy relationships amongst each other.
When the purpose of the task is clear, a positive influence on the performance is observed. The leadership model has main four elements that will lead to the overall benefit of the organization. The knowledge of the purpose will help in creating the vision, values, goals, and mission of the task. While performance will help in analyzing the culture, effective change in the approach, and strategic planning for achieving the goal (Shapiro, 2016). The knowledge of personality and required personal traits will help in developing the qualities of self-awareness, situational fit, self-regulation, and emotional stability towards achieving the goal. While professional integrity will maintain the trust and decorum of the organization which in turn will bring collaboration, positivity, and credibility within the organization (Thoms, 2008).
The leadership practiced in the model is oriented to meet the main purpose of the task in the most fruitful manner. The main aim is to achieve the high degree of performance, development of personal traits, professional integrity in terms of moral, as well as, ethical beliefs, development of vision and methods of achieving this goal and vision, versatility, internal consistency, and self-awareness. The leadership model underpins the importance of having the complete knowledge of purpose of the leadership as it helps in developing the vision, values, and mission of the task and also focus on achieving the high degree of performance by working on the limitations of the personality and developing the quality of professional integrity (Thoms, 2008).
The assessment of the personal traits and qualities will help in the application of the personal leadership development model. The use of the various methods by which the effective communication can be developed will help in utilizing the model in an effective manner. Further, this model will help in analyzing the required skills and qualities of the personality that are important for the better performance of the individual as a leader. Thus, comparing these qualities with the qualities I am lacking will guide me to develop these qualities and skills for the effective demonstration of my leadership qualities. Hence, this model will act as a guide for analyzing and developing the personality traits and skills (Strang and Kuhnert, 2009).
Conclusion
Leadership is the art of influencing others to perform in accordance with one’s desire without any forced action and influences the followers at their intellectual, social, or personal level. Leadership helps in creating an environment that outgrowths the performance of the team and its organization. A successful leader is the one who besides influencing the members is also capable of inculcating the feeling of motivation and satisfaction amongst his team members or followers. Personal leadership model is the effective way of developing leadership skills as it provides accountability to oneself and to others. Personal leadership helps the individual realize the potential of developing further. Hence, the development of the PPPI model is for demonstrating the weaknesses and strengths, as well as, for determining the course in which I need to pursue developing the effective leadership qualities.
