My name is Umeanadu Lynda Chibugwu from Anambra state, Nigeria. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Uli (formerly Anambra state University). I seek for an opportunity to study for a Master’s degree in Biomedical engineering at University of Saskatchewan. Biomedical engineering offers great career opportunities that are in tandem with my long term goals to aid me contribute immensely to the development of my home country. I desire a master’s degree in this field not only because it is one of the most fulfilling ways I can exercise my natural talents as a scholar, but because it also gives me the opportunity to solve challenges directly impacting my community health wise.
Having a Master’s degree from your university would definitely help me lay foundation for fulfillment of my dream.
During my undergraduate days, I had the opportunity to be exposed to the full range of biochemistry courses, chemistry, physics, mathematics, cell biology and physiology all of which reinforced and solidified my intense interest in biomedical engineering, which involves the application of biological and engineering principles to understand, modify or control biological systems with the objective of generating solutions to health-related problems.
During my four years as an undergraduate, I spent six months as an intern at Lahor Research Laboratory and Medical center, Benin City as a Laboratory Technician.
With my short experience and undergraduate knowledge, I was able to carry out tests on tissue, blood and other body fluids, prepare report and documents patients report, after which I did a presentation on Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) a test for prostate cancer and got a distinction.
This training provided me with a pragmatic outlook and the prerequisite attitude and aptitude for medical research and it will help during my researches in Bio-engineering program. I am confident that I would make recognizable inputs to the paradigm diversity of the bio-medical world.
I worked hard and sincerely to achieve good grades, which is evident from my consistent grades. In addition to my academic proficiency, I participated actively in several extra-curricular activities like school politics, social service events, leadership trainings and conferences. As a result of my commitment and leadership prowess, I was elected as the vice president of my department in my second year. Our greatest achievement was the partnership with other school executives to organize conference on Biochemistry and Vision 20:20:20; biogas generation as an alternative power supply, seminars and workshops thereby equipping the students with adequate and requisite knowledge to enable them excel in their academic endeavors.
Upon completion of my one year compulsory National Youth Service Corp, I had already planned to further my education by pursuing a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. My interest in Biomedical Engineering with specialization in Bio-Engineering (tissue engineering, biomaterials and drug delivery). From my undergraduate background, I have built a comprehensive knowledge of the basic areas not limited to gene therapy, tissue engineering, genetic engineering, bio-instrument design and manufacture, industrial biochemistry and biotechnology, biological systems, molecular biology and genetics etc. Also my seminar topic on “Gene therapy of enzyme defects” has motivated me to continue a graduate research on Bio-engineering which will provide me with a broad understanding on tissue engineering and strategies to regenerate or repair damaged genes or tissue.
I currently work as a Regulatory Affairs Officer at Clarion Medical Limited. I serve as an intermediary between my company and regulatory authorities, Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) ensuring that products are manufactured and distributed in compliance with appropriate legislation. Attending and assisting the departmental head in conducting research and collecting updates related to NAFDAC. Planning, undertaking and overseeing product trials and regulatory inspections, keeping up to date with changes in regulatory legislation and guidelines. Also, offering advice about company policies, practices and systems, obtaining marketing permission, outlining requirements for labeling, storage and packaging, liaising and negotiating with regulatory authorities. I am a certified safety supervisor. I had my professional qualification and training on health Safety Security Environment (Level 1, 2, and 3) with Prime International Risk and Safety Management a member of British Safety Council.
Furthermore, as a Masters student of Bioengineering with specialization in Tissue Engineering, my goal is to make a direct contribution to the growth and advancement of the field of Tissue engineering through my research and studies. I am convinced that University of Saskatchewan is the right place to further my academic career. Your eminent faculty, excellent research facilities, access to state of the art facilities, labs, research centers, and the Canadian Light Source and the courses offered your University is very much likely to produce excellent results to the fields of my interest.
Finally, I would like to pledge that if granted admission into your university, I would perform optimally and hope to acquire skills that will help me realize my dreams. I strongly believe that a Master’s degree will be a deciding factor in shaping my future.
