Discuss about the VASL Survey For Personality Test.
Personality encompasses the relatively stable feelings of a person considering the thoughts and behavioral patterns. Everyone possesses the unique characteristic, which is the key to differentiate the individual within an organisation (Leutner et al., 2014). The reflection of the personality traits determines the reaction of the individual during the emergence of diverse situation. When we seek the effectiveness while performing the organisational functionalities, it is necessary for us to understand the behavioral attributes of the employees. It helps the managers to allocate the jobs appropriately to the suitable people. In this study, I shall undertake the VASL survey to assess my values and identify the factors that influence my perceptions. Furthermore, I shall undertake the personality test for describing my employment traits that I need to maintain for ensuring success. The motivational attributes would also be described in this study to manage the effectiveness within the workplace.
It is quite difficult to assess the values of an individual, especially when the values are influenced by many factors (Judge & Zapata, 2015). SBI Consulting Business Intelligence has developed the VALS topology that assesses one’s values on the basis of their personality. After conducting the VALS survey test, I have identified that I belong to the group of Experiencers in the primary topology. The members of this group are usually the first ones to adopt the latest trends and they seek everything that is new. They usually go against the current mainstream and always up for the latest fashion trends. They are more interested in being engaged into the physical activities. Their value assessment also indicates that they are very sociable and extremely friendly with people. Their spontaneous attributes and the heightened sense of visual stimulation are much appreciable.
If I assess my values with these traits, I can observe that I possess majority of the traits as an experiencer. Firstly, I am quite fashion-prone and try out latest fashions. I prefer to experience every new thing that would bring some excitement into my life. I like to make friends and prioritizing them in my life. I find myself very sociable, which is determined by my larger social circle. I like to communicate with different people since I seek much knowledge about their culture and their background. It always motivates me to broaden my knowledge and experience the lessons. I have observed that the traits described for an experiencer indicate that they go against the current mainstream and they seek everything. These traits are quite surprising for me since I cannot find the similarities in these traits. I need to concentrate on my behavioural traits that would help me in achieving my dreams. Communicating with the people and making them comfortable during the conversation provide me the opportunity to explore their nature and characteristics. It is quite helpful for me to know people, their diversified nature and values, and learn about their preferences. I maintain a good balance between my emotions and the practical situation. I would like to understand the situation and react accordingly. It would help me in strengthening my interpersonal communication skills. It is true that I seek information in every new incident I come across, but I do not go against the current mainstream. I always try to maintain the balance in my life. I believe too much of something might become harmful for people. Therefore, I always prefer to take time before assuming and I like to take things slowly and patiently.
My secondary trait is the innovators, which are quite sophisticated, successful, and hey value the personal growth. I can relate my characteristics with the innovators. Similar to the innovators, I have the wider intellectual interests. Before assuming anything, I prefer to derive the adequate information about the very event. As their trait specifies, I am also quite concerned about the social issues. As an innovator, I am confident, optimistic, involved, growth-oriented, and open or flexible to change. I am even finer receptive when it comes to adopt any new circumstance. I have noticed that I am quite adaptive towards the emergence of the technologies and new business scenario. It helps me in growing more in this frequently advanced world. However, among all these traits, I am surprised to notice that the innovators are politically very active. If I judge personal view, I am not so much involved with the political discussions. I do take interests in any political subjects. Therefore, it is quite surprising for me since I do not possess this trait as an innovator. However, I am quite confident about my abilities and flexibility that are mostly needed in this contemporary world.
In the VALS experiment, I have identified some of the traits or characteristics of the individuals. There are different types of individuals based on their values, such as innovators, thinkers, achievers, experiencer, and believers. I have gathered knowledge about the diverse personalities and traits the individuals possess. Among these traits, I have found out the innovators are the ones who are easily managed. The current world is rapidly changing and the innovations are much common to this contemporary world. Both the business and education sectors are driven by the innovations and advancements in process. It is thus necessary to become an adaptive individual in this rapidly changing scenario. The innovators are much flexible and adaptive towards change. They tend to try new things that bring advancements into the world. This trait is quite significant in considering the fast pace of the worldly events. On the other hand, it has been seen that the achievers are the ones who believe in achieving goals and keep the smaller circle. People having these traits are more likely moderate in nature and they avoid the excess change. In spite of having the positive responses towards life, the achievers are more likely attracted towards the premium values. Hence, they are not much flexible towards diverse situations. Therefore, I can imply that the achievers are quite difficult to manage. Especially, in a world, where the fast growing technologies, business processes, and demands are rapidly changing, the perception of the achievers is quite hard to be considered.
The above assessment identifies my values as an innovator and experiencer. The concentration on these traits generates the ideas about the diverse personality traits and moral values to ensure personal growth. I need to concentrate on my behavioural traits that would help me in achieving my dreams. I need to be cautious while communicating with others. I am always focused on my language and gestures to make others comfortable. My positivity would lead me further in life and protect me from negative influences. The further section of the study would analyze the diverse personality traits of the individuals in terms of dealing with the emerging situations. The identification of the diverse personality of the people would also ensure their reaction towards the emerging scenario.
I have undertaken an interview session in which one of my colleagues took the participation. In interviewed him to know what similarities and differences we have in our personality traits. I have observed that while I am quite fashion prone and like to try the updated fashion segment whenever I come across any of it. However, going opposite to my nature, it is noticed that my colleague would like to accept the fashion trend, but would like to continue the fashion even when it is replaced by new trends. On the other hand, I have found similarities between us as well. I have found out that both of us like to maintain the balance between the practicality and the emotions. I always seek information before assuming anything. My colleague also likes to judge the situation and gather information before presenting any assumptions about the scenario. He is quite sociable like me and likes to communicate with the people from diverse background. In addition to this, I have also found out the similarities in the excitements that we would like to have as the experiencers. We seek excitements in the functionalities that we require performing in our daily lives. On the other hand, as an Innovator, I have observed both similarity and dissimilarity with my colleague. I do not believe in science whereas he likes to gather information about the scientific evaluation. This dissimilarity between us is identified as an innovator. However, I have identified that we both are quite adaptive to the change. In this advanced world, we need to face some of the changes to keep the pace with the frequently changing globalised world. Hence, it is important for both of us to adopt the new technicalities and learn the innovative process. I have identified that we have the similarities in becoming adaptive towards change.
Management is the integral part of an organisation. A good managerial skills and the management process help in accomplishing the corporate objectives and develop the personal attributes as well. Management involves a set of principles that function in the area of planning, directing, organizing, applying, and controlling the activities (Parks-Leduc, Feldman & Bardi, 2015). These principles harness human, physical, financial, and informational resources much affectively to achieve organisational objectives. As a manager, I need to be skilled enough in identifying the needs and requirements of my colleagues. The roles they are playing would lead the entire organisation towards success. Therefore, the identification of the need and requirements of the employees would help me in knowing their preferences. Moreover, being a manager, I should be aware of their expertise skills, which would help me in allocating the jobs as per their efficiency level. Moreover, I need to monitor their work progress and provide them sufficient support to achieve their goals. It is also essential for me to provide my employees adequate supports whenever they seek anything from the managers. The employees have their diverse perspective values and characteristics. I should acknowledge their efforts and respect their perspectives. If required I can even provide the effective training session to them to adjust their focus on a targeted objective.
If I concentrate on my colleague, his flexile approaches towards accepting the change are quite helpful for me to bring the innovation in the organisational functionalities. He always seeks information before proceeding with any work. It is a good sign of seeking knowledge. It gives me immense pleasure when I am able to help someone to gather the knowledge regarding their personal and professional development attributes. Moreover, he uses the scientific skills to testify any specific functionality. Therefore, I can use the democratic management style to manage him and get some fruitful advices from him. If I consult with my colleague before undertaking any specific decision for the organisation, it would help me to drive towards successful management process.
Personality is the combination of the qualities and characteristics of the individuals that create their unique identities (Miller, 2015). It generally signifies the behavior or role of the person in a specific setting. It is noticeable that each of the individuals has the unique personality traits that are influenced by two major determinants, such as learned characteristics and inherited characteristics (Zacher, 2014). The inherited characteristics are generated from the previous generation of the individuals. For example, the physical features of the individuals are inherited. On the other hand, learned characteristics are acquired, first from home and then from society followed by the educational institutes. The learned characteristics include the individuals’ personality, values, perceptions, and attitudes. I seek gathering knowledge from various sources and make improvements through every possible way. If anyone advises me for my betterment, I would happily accept it. I can communicate with the people from different background and learn about their characteristics and preferences that would gather extensive knowledge about the diverse cultures. In this course, I have undertaken the personality tests to understand my characteristics while dealing with the outer world.
In order to identify my personality traits, I have undertaken two personality tests. At the first stage, I have undertaken the Big Five Personality Test, which reveals several important factors noticed in my personal traits. I have scored 67 in extroversion, which depicts I am a very talkative person. Even within an organisational setting, I like to gather more responses from the associated people and converse with them to discuss any vital information. This communicative behaviour helps me in staying positive and creates the positive motives among others. The second personality was emotional stability, in which I have scored 74 that determines the level of my sensitiveness. I am quite sensitive as a person that makes me easily hurt even if it is quite negligible issue. However, I maintain a good balance between my emotions and the practical situation. I would like to go with the flow and I understand that not everything is meant to please me with positive traits. However the result refers that I am quite negative towards the situations and I face difficulties in managing my emotions. I was quite unaware of this trait of mine. It is quite surprising for me that I score higher in this trait that determines my negative perspectives towards the difficult situation.
The next personality is agreeableness in which I scored 56. It depicts the moderate trait of mine in being optimistic and friendly. This score is quite acceptable since I am quite fond of optimism and I maintain the friendly behaviour with others. The next personality is Conscientiousness and I scored 18 in this segment. It generates the idea about the reliability. I am quite surprised to know this result as I consider myself as the most reliable person. Scoring low in this section makes me surprise as I am not an impulsive thinker. I keep patience and make the right result out of any situation. However, this score I have received from the section is quite surprising. The last personality is intellect or imagination, which indicates the lower score. However, I am quite surprised in this result as well. I am much imaginative as a person and develop the intellectual decisions whenever it is necessary. This personality trait identifies that I was labeled as Extroversion at the factor 1, which is sometimes considered as the positive trait. People who score higher in this trait are general considered as outgoing and active communicator. I have observed that I am an extrovert and I like to zeal with the people. The communication with them helps me in gathering knowledge about the people from different countries and cultural values.
The next test was Myers –Briggs personality trait that is based on four major preferences. These four preferences are introversion-extroversion, sensing-intuition, feeling-thinking, and judging-perceiving. The obtained result from this test indicates that I have scored higher in the extroversion. It determines that I center my attention outside world and I am quite eager to communicate with people. It provides me the opportunity to coordinate with people and helps me in enhancing my knowledge about the worldly things. The second preference indicates my inclination towards sensing or intuition. It has been identified that I am quite good at sensing, which indicates my cognitive functions of my sense organs. Another comparison is presented between feeling and thinking. It has been noticed that I have the urge of thinking more to judge the situation. I am more inclined towards evaluating goals by judging the function. It helps me in assessing the goals by developing the personal values or objectifying the principles. The final preference indicates the judgment between judging and perceiving. It has been observed that I prefer perceiving more that indicates flexibility in the lifestyle. Therefore, I can imply that my personality helps me in understanding the situational events according to which I decide to react. I think I maintain a good balance in dealing with the situation and it generates more positivity in me.
These personality tests have the significant connection with employment. It has been observed that the individuals have to face the dynamic environment in their professional life (Parks-Leduc, Feldman & Bardi, 2015). The organisations seek employees who are flexible enough in working in a diverse work environment with other employees from different cultural background. Moreover, the changing demands of the customers drive the companies to adopt the dynamic work functionalities. The employees require being much adaptive to change during such situation. On the other hand, their behavioral traits and adaptive attitude towards innovative practices ensure the business development in a competitive ground. Employers also recruit people who are flexible towards working in a dynamic organisational scenario by maintaining cohesiveness with the employees from diverse cultural background. When an employee is compulsive, it would help an organisation to develop the long term vision (Luthans, Luthans & Luthans, 2015). Their skills and efficiency would ensure the accomplishment of the business goals. The employers seek for the employees who are much imaginative and perspective towards the future prospects. An imaginative employee can lead the organisation towards success. However, the visionary traits of the employees develop the unique strategies for the organisational success.
It is noticed that the assertive personality of the employees create the long term vision for the organisation, which eventually turns out to be much profitable. Everyone possesses the unique characteristic, which is the key to differentiate the individual within an organisation. A leader of an organisation has to be a foreseer who would guide the organisation towards the right direction and develop the greater organisational culture to accomplish determined goals. Hence, it can be said that the personality traits have the clear linking with the employers.
I believe motivation does not emerge from any specific compartmentalized ground. People need to find the worldly things surrounding them work as the motivators. Every individual has some purpose of the life that needs to be identified at the right time. When they keep their positive approach towards life, they tend to identify the ways of accomplish those goals (Kaiser, LeBreton & Hogan, 2015). Managing my behavioural attitudes would help me in achieving future goals and leading me towards as positive direction. Maintaining the positive attitude and good communication skills would lead me developing a greater interpersonal relationship. As an outcome, it helps in strengthening my communication skills, analytical efficiency, and maintaining impressive body language. The motivational theories explain the needs and requirements of an individual that drive them achieving their goals determined previously. An organisation hires the employees with high motivational spirits that would lead towards achieving the leading position in a competitive landscape (Viktoria Rampl & Kenning, 2014). I believe that having a clear vision of my future would motivate me to undertake the initiatives that would lead towards success. When I am working in a diverse scenario, it is important for me to develop the cohesiveness among the colleagues. I need to understand the basic personality trait that would help me in developing my personal and professional traits for the future prospects.
Managing people in a diverse cultural background is not much easy for the individuals. However, when I am performing as a leader, it is necessary for me to understand the way of managing people with different personalities. It is also essential for me to understand the factors that motivate the people in a significant way. In defining the motivational factor of the people, David McClelland introduced the Human Motivation Theory. It defines the drivers that motivate people to develop their personality traits (Klotz & Neubaum, 2016). If I am leading a team, it is essential for me to identify the methods of motivating my team mates. If I provide them regular feedback and appreciate their contribution, it would motivate them much significantly in making progress in their professional life. When I am establishing the transparent communication with my team mates, it helps them in understanding the business requirements. They would act according t the business situations and direct themselves towards achieving the professional and personal goals.
In the year of 1961, David McClelland introduced the human motivational theory, which depicts the necessary motivating factors. As per the theory, these three factors are a need for affiliation, a need for achievement, and a need for power. It is stated that every individual has the different characteristics that depend on the dominant behaviour. People, regardless of their culture, age, and gender are driven by different motivators. The first is a need for achievement, which determines the strong need of the challenging scenario to accomplish the goals. An achievement seeker first has the vision to set a goal and then faces the difficult situation and challenges to accomplish those determined goals. An achiever even takes the calculated risks for meeting the goals that are previously determined (Miller, 2015). Receiving the regular feedback helps them to grow in their career and develop their personal attributes to achieve professional objectives. They are more likely working along without the interruption from the external sources.
The next characteristic is the need for affiliation, which highlights the urge to stay within a group. People fall under this segment like to go along with the people in a group. They are mainly driven by the group activity. They like to develop the collaborative team within which the innovative ideas for the future prospects. It helps us to develop our personality in a significant way we can communicate with the group of people who belong to different values and cultures. The people working with this group do not like the high risks or emergence of any uncertainties (Seibert & DeGeest, 2017). Therefore, the systematic and predictable work structure motivates these people much recognizably. Another characteristic is the need for power, which reflects their urge to controlling and influencing others. People seek for power is more likely wining the argument and enjoy competition more. These challenging situations work as the motivators for them to develop their skills and efficiency. They are even confident enough to deal with every critical situation and lead the workforce in a significant way (Ahmad, Athar & Hussain, 2016). They enjoy their recognition and status, which eventually motivate them to stay positive.
The above traits identified in the theory helps in understanding the dominant motivators of an individual. Similarly, when I am on an environment where I receive the opportunity to learn new things. Moreover, if I receive chance to improve myself and feel appreciated; it motivates me in a significant way. I am quite eager to communicate with people. It provides me the opportunity to coordinate with people and helps me in enhancing my knowledge about the worldly things. This communicative behaviour helps me in staying positive and creates the positive motives among others. The organisations seek employees who are flexible enough in working in a diverse work environment with other employees from different cultural background. Therefore, I become much motivated when I feel I am influencing others to achieve something in their life.
Conclusion
In this study, I have undertaken the personality tests that identify the characteristics and the motivational factors. The obtained ideas from the tests indicate that I have the wider intellectual interests. Before assuming anything, I prefer to derive the adequate information about the very event. As their trait specifies, I am also quite concerned about the social issues. As an innovator, I am confident, optimistic, involved, growth-oriented, and open or flexible to change. I maintain a good balance between my emotions and the practical situation. I always try to keep the positive attitude towards the uncertain situations and strengthen myself for moving ahead. The motivational theories explain the needs and requirements of an individual that drive them achieving their goals determined previously. An organisation hires the employees with high motivational spirits that would lead towards achieving the leading position in a competitive landscape. In defining the motivational factor of the people, David McClelland introduced the Human Motivation Theory. It defines the drivers that motivate people to develop their personality traits. If I am leading a team, I should look for the methods of motivating my team mates. If I provide them regular feedback and appreciate their contribution, it would motivate them much significantly in making progress in their professional life.
