What does it mean to be a 21st century teacher? So, how do they look like? Do they have a distinctive characteristic that is unique and different from other professions? Can they establish a certain quality apart from all forms of work?

A term which connotes the spirit of fairness and denotes the individual capabilities of a person, that is innate from one’s own ability. A word that describes a certain idea to create judgments based on how it presents a picture. Therefore, quality is a face of two definitions. A noun where it suggests its literal meaning in the dictionary.

Nevertheless, teachers possess a definite kind of quality, quality that could identify their personality as a knowledge power. Knowledge powers that could match their competence as a branch of quality. Hence, competence is classified as a capacity to be excellent in any manner of craftsmanship. Competence is understood as it includes skills, attitudes and experiences which has a target category or level. It has an ability to perform or carry out tasks in particular context.
Meanwhile, teachers possess this aspect as they ruled their ego into new heights. Heights that could elevate, not just the status of education, but the teachers which comprises it.

They provide a foundation for life in the complex, diverse and uncertain economic and social environment of the current times. Easily, they could adapt to several innovations happening on the realm of the outside. They are faced with impacts of new technologies, new economies and a challenging world. Being a teacher in the 21st century goes beyond work in the classroom, it requires an understanding of the multiple contexts of teaching, the multiple players in education and the diverse roles which leads to be valuable. It also involves an ongoing professional learning in the forms of further studies, participation in professional development programs and engagement in professional school-based learning communities. It is their goal to develop students with skills and knowledge necessary not just for lifelong learning but more specifically for the knowledge economy. The knowledge-based economy is a complex interaction between individuals and institutions actively seeking to learn from one another. One of its characteristics is innovativeness, where people often exhibit curiosity, creativity and commitment. As such, they develop into people with a vision, become customer-driven, have a holistic view and are risk tolerant. They are able to utilize resources and mutual learning process that translates knowledge into economic growth.
An accommodating and versatile individual with the talent to develop inspiring hands-on lessons that will capture a learners’ imagination and breed success. They are committed in creating a classroom atmosphere that is stimulating and encouraging to students. In line with this, the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) is characterized as a standard to achieve one’s quality. Quality teachers promotes quality learning. Their profile is suggested as a mechanism to enhance nation building towards a valuable success in effective inculcating.
Teachers play a crucial role in improving the quality of the teaching learning process. Hence, enhancing teacher quality ranks foremost in the educational reform efforts towards quality education. In August 2017, the Department of Education Secretary, Leonor Magtolis Briones signed into policy Department Order No. 42, s. 2017, stipulating the National Adoption and Implementation of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers. Philippine Professional Standard for Teachers utilize to help further find out and develop better and more effective ways of teaching your various fields. According to the Secretary of Department of Education that over three years, thousands of teachers, stakeholders, school heads, teacher education supervisor contributed to the development and validation of Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST). The National Competency Based Teacher Standard (NCBTS) is the key element of the Teacher Education and Development Program (TEDP). The NCBTS defines effective teaching as being to help all types of student learn the different goals of the curriculum anchored on the core values of the Filipino teachers. The Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers articulates teacher quality through well define the seven domains, 37 strands, and 80 performance indicators of effective teaching and learning with seven (7) domains.
It is to further develop ways in making the learners more creative, to be more analytical and to prepare them for lifelong learning. Because, it doesn’t stop with formal schooling. Learning is a lifetime experience and it is a lifetime journey. The National Adoption and Implementation of the Philippine Professional Standard for Teacher, under the NCBTS strategy, needs assessment for efficiency, effectiveness, quality, and awareness.
Teachers ought to attend in-service education programs because, they need to upgrade their competencies in order to provide more effective teaching service. Through in-service education, a teacher is empowered by gaining added training to supplement the inadequacy of pre-service education; being informed of new trends in teaching and emerging concepts of education; becoming in-touch with the changing conditions in society and changing status of youth and becoming aware of new concepts in changes and National development. This is the reason why the researcher was prompted to undertake the study.
