Marianne Williamson was a spiritual activist, author and founder of the Peace Alliance, which established the United State Department of Peace. The passage that is being written about comes from Mrs. Williamsons book Return to love. did not read the book to have found this poem, I first heard the poem in a movie known as Coach Carter, and later in a you tube video. The poem touches me and leaves me with a feeling of achieving a higher greatness. The poem is just this.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. ” There is going to be given a break down on this poem, not a summary but explanation of what she means in each phrase giving the reader a better understanding; so that they can have the same feeling as some do.
Williamsons say “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. she means that in this verse, what we are most afraid of is not that we will come up short, not that we will fail but that “Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. ” She means our deepest fear what we are most afraid of is having that power of being great, achieving that power to where no one can stop you. It scares us most because you are not sure if you have the will power or the motivation to dare, to take the chance, or take the risk of committing themselves to becoming powerful beyond measure.
“It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. This verse is repetitive of the second verse but in a different way of saying it. Our light meaning that the thing inside us that knows we could be great scares you more than what are you just right now. “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. “ We are all children of god, he made us in his own image; to all be beautiful, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous. What she is saying is do not lower yourself on the thoughts that you are not one of these attributes but believe that you are unique in your own way. Your playing small does not serve the world. ” Don’t play the small part in life, it does not help you or anyone around you; be a big part to help serve, for that is what we are here for. “There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. ” You do not have to become the smaller person in life around people, just so people will like you more, stand up for what you are and don’t be pushed around. “ We are all meant to shine, as children do. ” Ever seen a child when they are very happy?
They have a certain glow about them and that happiness is contagious and so we shine like they do. “We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. ” Going back to the children of god, he made us in his image to achieve power, to achieve greatness, but not to be small and insecure. We all have the power inside us but its who is willing to sacrifice the most to harness it. “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. When we set out to be great, and our light is shining like a child’s, then other people begin to see that light and that shine and the subliminally start to change so that there light will shine and all darkness will disappear. “As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. ” By escaping from that fear, by being released from the chains of fear, other people begin to see it to and they want to be released from that fear as well. The light we hold in us when it shines it becomes contagious.
