Its also a place where great sports players have come from such as Jacky Ickx and Eddy Merckx. Belgium also has a great education system where an estimated 98% of the adult population is literate. It also has many different religions. Belgium’s education starts off at the same place for most people, preschool. Pre schooling starts off at the age of two years 6 months for most kids.
Even though preschool isn’t mandatory over 90% of the children in Belgium attend preschool. After preschool is primary school which consists of six years. Primary school focuses on reading, writing, and math, but also teaches other subjects such as religion, music, history and biology. Primary schooling is free and the only requirement is age. When children graduate from primary school at usually 12 they will then go into Secondary school. Secondary school also consists of 6 years and usually this is where kids have to choose what they will want to be, depending on there skills on certain subjects.
Belgium is currently ranked 19th out of 30 countries on there education by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). The most popular sports in Belgium are cycling and football. The most famous cyclist in Belgium is Eddy Merckx, with five wins in the Tour De France he is ranked the 1 greatest cyclist ever. Eddy Merckx’s hour speed set in 1972 stood for twelve years.
Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin were both player of the year in the Womans Tennis Association as they were both ranked the number one female tennis player.
The Belgian driver Jacky Ickx has won eight Grands Prix and six 24 Hours of Le Mans and has finished as runner-up in the Formula One World Championship twice. Belgium is known worldwide for its amazing food. Belgians love waffles and french fries. French fries also originated in Belgium. The name french fries actually refers to the way that the potato is cut, to french means to cut into slivers. The national dishes in Belgium are steak and fries with salad, and mussels with fries. Belgium produces 500 varieties of beers.
The biggest brewer in the world, InBev is based in Belgium. During the reign of Albert I and Baudouin, the monarchy in Belgium has had a reputation of deeply-rooted Catholicism. Belgium’s concept of recognized religions set a path for Islam to follow to acquire the treatment of Jewish and Protestant religions. While other minority religions such as Hinduism do not yet have such status. According to the 2001 Survey and Study of Religion, about 47% of the population identify themselves as belonging to the Catholic Church, while Islam is the second largest religion at 3.
