I am currently working as a marketing consultant in my current organization. I have assigned the job of erecting a team with the objective of enhancing the sales figure in a particular territory. My team will be of 6 members and thus they will from different sets of cultural and social backgrounds. It is important for me to consider this factor of cultural factor in building the team. The first job of mine will be to identify the skill sets of the team members based on their past experience and education qualification and assign the team roles accordingly. This is important due to the reason that if the team memebes can be assigned job according to their specialization then they will be able to work effectively and team productivity will get enhanced.
In this case, i will refer to the Belbin team roles due to the fact that Belbin stated the nine key and important roles that should be played by the team players in order to have an effective team. However, as my team will consists of only 6 members, thus i will assign the major 6 team roles among the team members (Matheiu et al. 2014). The first team role will be teamworker. I will expect this from majority of the team members due to the fact that the versatility of the teamworker is important in effective working of a team. In addition, having the skill of the teamworker will also help to have more responsible members in the team.
The next teamrole will be the coordinator. This will also be assign ed to majority of the team members in order to ensure that all the team members are working on collective basis and delegating their work among themselves. The next one will be plant. I will expect to have alteast two members for this role. This will help me to have members with having problem solving skills and who can deal with different challenges and complexities (Mathieu et al. 2015).The next role will be of specialist. This is also applicable for all the team members due to the reason that working in a marketing team means that all the team members are expected to have specialiation in the particular field. The next role will be shaper that boasts of the skills of maintaining the momentum of the team in the time of rough phase. I expects to have at least 3 members of mine to have this skill. The last team role will of completer finisher. My team should have 2 members for this role and they will be responsible to ensure the quality of the job and identificayion of any errors.
According to the theory of interpersonal skills, it is important for the team members as well as for the team leader to have proper verbal and non-verbal communication skills in order to have effective communication process in place. Thus, i will make sure about having the fair understanding abut all my team members. This will help me to deal with them accordingly. I will also conduct tranning session for the team members to have their understanding about their fellow members (Cheruvelil et al. 2014). This will help me to have more coordination among the team members. Another important skill of mine will be to manage conflict.There is higher probability of having difference in opinions and thus i should have the skills of collaborating, cooperating, compromising and accommodating in order to bulid the consensus in the team. According to the Tuckman’s teamwork theory, a team will perfrom better only when the team members will be able to work and contribute together. Thus, the conflict management skills of mine will help to maintain the consensus among the team members.
According to the STAR model of teamwork, team members will perform better when they will be treated ethically and with honesty. Thus, ethics and professional conducts will be followed strictly in the team. In addition, the ethical approach of mine will also help to maintain the ethical environment in the team. If the leaders can be ethical enough, then it will further motivate the team members to follow the footsteps of their leader. Leadership skills are one of the major determining factors in effective team management due to the reason that leadership skills will influcnce the effectiveness and productivity of the team members. According to the transformational style of leadership, leaders should be motivating and encouraging in order to have maximum output from their team members. Hence, it is important for me to be a transformational leader in order to have enhanced level of job satisfaction among the team members (Dumdum, Lowe and Avolio 2013). This will also enable me to gain more ideas from the side of the team members. In addition, initiation of the trasnforational leadership will also help in having effective and positive relationship between the team leader and the team members. This will in turn contribute in acheiveing the team objectives and meeting the targets effectively.
The team discussed in ths above section will have members from different sets of cultural and social backgrounds. Thus, leading this team will be a challenging task for me by determining the different and diverse sets of factors for each of the team members. I will initiate the strategy of employee oriented approach for leading the team. This is due to the reason that initiation of the employee oriented approach will help in managing the team members more effectively by providing the space for the team members. It is also to be noted that i am new in managing a team and thus i will have the requirement of support from the team members in drving the team in acheiving the team objectives (Hoch and Kozlowski 2014). With the help of the emplotee oriented approach, i will be able to have more satisfied and engaged team members in my team, which will help me to work more with cooperative and coordinated manner.
One of the primary factors that i will consider in leading the team is to have a one to one session with each of the team members. This is important due to the reason that in a new team, there should have a proper relationship between the team leaders and the team members. In addition, i should also have the idea about the strength and weakness of the each of team members (Costa, Passos and Bakker 2014). Hence, with the help of one to one session, i will able to identify the individual positive and negative factors and this will help me to control them in the future course of action. On the other hand, with the help of the one to one session, each of the team members will also be able to identify the key traits of mine and will adjust themselves in working in the team. The primary introductory part will also be completed in this session.
The next step of mine will be conduct a session with the entire team. The main objective of initiating this ession is to create the rapoort among the team members and also setting up the team objectives. As per the employee oriented approach of mine, i will consult with the team members in setting up the objectives and goals that will be decided based on consensus. This will ensure that the team objectives will be accepeted by all the team members and no one will have any types of issues in accomplishing these challenges. Conducting this session will also help me in determining the approach of the team members in working in the team. Based on this information, i will assign the team roles to the team members. Thus, the effectiveness of the team will get increased if the team roles can be allocated based on the individual approach of the team members.
One of my major strengths is analytical capability and accuracy in predicting the future business potentiality. Thus, in this team, i wil take the responsibility of predicting the future and would be business scenario with the team members. This will help them to work accordingly. On the other hand, the analytical skills of mine along with the skill sets of the team members will help the team to meet the targets effectively. In terms of the leadership approach, transformational style of leadership will be initiated by me. However, it should also be noted that transformational style of leadership to be followed by me will be more in the form of situational style of leadership (McCleskey 2014). This is due to the reason that in the current business scenario, organizational situations are changing more frequently. In this case, initiation of the situational style of leadership will be beneficial for me as well as for the entire team. This is due to the reason that situational leadership will let me to change my leadership approach in accordance to the organizational situation. In addition, my preference for the transformational style of leadership will let me involve the team members in decision making process of the team. This will increase the involvement of the team members in the team working and thus their productivity and efficiency will also get increased. Furthermore, it is also to be noted that with the help of the transformational style of leadership, effective communication will be ensured in the team and this will also enhance the relationship between the all the stakeholders along with effective determination of the issues and challenges of the team members. It will be easier for me to identify the negative factors of the team members and manage accordingly.
Thus, it can be concluded that the core objective of my way of managing the team will be to maintain effective relationship and cooperative approach in the team along with ensuring the involvement of the team members in the team activities.
