Discuss about the Psychiatric and Psychological Contributions System.
The mental health issues of the individuals are an all time issue that depends upon the awareness of the individuals. With the enhancement of awareness of mental health among the individuals, the demand for its services also increases. For that reason, the treating symptoms basing upon the particular diagnoses is established specifically to enable the individuals to restore their functioning level before the illness will be totally surfaced(Abuse, 2013). Therefore a high level of effective as well as efficient model of mental health service is needed for the treatment of psychological disabilities of the individuals. This report brings out focus upon the processes by which the psychiatric conditions of the patients are diagnosed with an aim to restore the functional level by which the readers can get the idea of treating the mental illness of the individuals.
As per Eisenberg, Hunt & Speer, like the strength based approach, the recovery produces the guidelines before people in guiding the patients living in the mental health care centre. These guiding principles will serve as the base in facilitating the changes in the life of those patients. Therefore the recovery is one of the processes that will work deeply as well as personally to change an individual’s life by changing that person’s attitudes, feelings, values, skills as well as roles. With recovery there occurs as new meaning or new purpose of life of the aged people living in the mental care centre(Eisenberg, Hunt & Speer, 2013).
In that context, Forbes &Watt said that, the concept of recovery will definitely not mean any type of cure rather it can be counted as the beautiful life experience. In return, the recovery helps the individual to adapt to the symptoms by redefining his or her own identity. Basically the mental health care centres voluntarily or involuntarily welcome many patients where the periphery of the social workers varies in a wide range(Forbes & Watt, 2015). With an aim to become recover oriented practitioner the individual should carry out the person focussed psychosocial process. Basically the recovery therapy works in healing the patients as well as their family members.
As per Aguirre et al, this particular write up is based upon the situation where the individual is working in a mental health centre specifically with psychogeriatric units. These psychogeriatric units of the health centre consist of the individuals aging 65 years and above. And in this unit, the patients are generally admitted voluntarily or involuntarily. In these wards, the social workers provide support, education as well as monitoring to deal with the mental illness as well as psychological condition of the patients(Aguirre et al., 2013). Moreover, this ward is established to provide and maintain the multidisciplinary process that takes the care of the patient as well as their family in dealing with their social, emotional and physical needs.
In this contextBowling said that psychiatry is the aspect that describes the mental condition as well as mental health problems. In that case, the implementation of recovery and strength based approach will help in building a collaborative relationship in between the care providers. Therefore this approach will result in improving the well being along with the quality of life of the patient within the heath care centre(Bowling, 2014). For that reason, a recovery as well as strength based approach is a must to clearly analyse the solution. In that case, a clear understanding of the strength and recovery based practice for the mental illness patients.
The description of the demographics of the local community in Australia majorly covers the basic statistics of the population of the cities along with their ethnicity and the religion of that place. Basing upon that factor the recent description of the population is estimated to be 24,415,800 by which the country comes in the position of 52nd populous country across the globe. The most importantly the Australian demographics is supposed to be concentrated upon the urban areas that is expected to exceed the figure of 28 million by the year 2030. Moreover the place has the average population density of 3.2 persons per square kilometre of total land area. This resulted in the living of 89.1% of the population living in the urban areas of Australia. Out of all the factors that affect the demographics in this assessment is the age structure. The age structure of Australia provide the fact that the 15.8% of population comes under the age structure of 55-64 years and 20.1% of population comes under the age group of 65 years and over. Therefore as per the scenario of this assessment the mental health care centre almost consist of the patient mostly aged in between 65 years and above.
This approach is based upon the part where the social worker takes care of the identification of strengths within an individual or it family or community. After the identification of the requisite strength that is again added to the individual in the centre for the enhancement of their self-fulfilment and healing. According to Corey, the strength-based approach works with its methods in dealing with the people with psychiatric disabilities and recovering them from their problematic mental life(Corey, 2015). Moreover, the framework of recovery approach engrosses the practices that enhance the exploration, mobilization, development, discovery along with using the assets, resources as well as their strengths that have been used the people in their communities.
All these activities are carried out for achieving the goals by realizing their dreams. Therefore this brings out the valuation of the connections, skills, knowledge, potential and capacity by recognizing the inbuilt qualities of the people as well as their communities. In addition I am also working in that psychogeriatic unit. Most of the times I take acre that the staff members to work in collaboration by helping each other which will result in bringing out the co-producers of support. In relation to this case it is evident that this approach provides a negative aspect in treating the mental condition of old patients as compared to the young patients. The old patients show their response lately as compared to the young patients. Still the positive part of this is it brings out the positive attributes out from the individuals making them reliable to share regarding their issues in front of the practitioner.
It is, therefore, by acquiring this collaborative process I focus on drawing the strengths and assets from the aged persons in the health care. As a care provider, I basically consider some of these standards in treating the mental patients. As per Corrigan, Druss&Perlick, the processes must be goal oriented for strengths assessment by drawing every possible resource from the environment as well as methods that should be clearly used for the identification of the patient as well as making their goal attainment (Corrigan, Druss&Perlick, 2014). These standards help me in building a meaningful relationship with the patient as well as their family members which is a hope inducing and meaningful choice. These standards also help me to deal patiently with the aged patients in the care centre.
The recovery therapy works by putting importance over the shifting of their emphasis from the patient’s symptoms as well as disabilities towards the identification o their strengths as well as positive attribute. When compared to the strength based approach the positivity in the healing process is its builds a loyal and trustworthy relationship with the patients. With this they can be able to be comfortable and can share their issues without hesitation. This results in the application effective treatment by which they can be cured form their mental illness.
In that process, the care providers like me establish sufficient amount of trust by building a therapeutic relationship with their clients. When the patients enter into the mental health care at that time the practitioners or the staff members make them explain and thereafter the recovery process starts (Fortinash&Worret, 2014). Afterward, there occurs the shift which is in between the practitioner to the patient. The shift can be said positive if the situation will be filled with positivity, respect as well as faith. This will provide strength and positivity to the patient to recover in its mental condition. Though it has many of the positive symptoms still a significant proportion of people are there who still survive with mental illness having positive residual symptoms and marked negative symptoms along with various cognitive deficits. After undergoing a strong recovery approach they still are not able to do their work with sufficient potential. Mostly with the failure of psychotropic medication people become unable to get back to the life track. They are living the life but away from the main stream of life which is the most negative aspect of recovery approach.
The family members of the patients were basically managed through the solution focused therapy. It basically focuses on the matter that people wants to achieve rather than the issue that led them to ask for help. In relation to this, the therapy controls the process of encouraging the affected individuals to make them determine towards their own pathways as well as solutions to attain the life goals(Reder&Lucey, 2014). This will the effective way to answer all the problems. On the whole, this approach keeps its centre upon the future aspirations of the individual by concentration upon a simple thing that will end up with life without the problem. The reason behind this is in any kind of issue the family support always strengthens the inner strength. It acts as the preventative service for every individual that include the responding to the families where the welfare of the children is in threat. Next, to that, it is necessary to enhance the family life that will reduce the risk to the children’s life. In addition, it is also necessary to develop the existing strength of the parents. The practitioners support this approach because as per them the social support networks can be enhanced with the increase in family efficacy.
The mental health approaches work in a number of processes that takes the patient out of the situation in which he or she has been for a long time. For example in case of a 69 years old man who is living alone in his home and is quite well known in its locality. But in recent few years, there has been a change in its behavioural aspects like often getting angry unnecessarily, being agitated and quarrelling with almost all people in the market. Though he does not has any kind of criminal record still, people start fearing due to his behaviour (Greenfield & Cocking, 2014). When this type of a patient is brought to the psychogeriatric unit of mental health centre at that time the practitioner came up with some findings due to which he has been shifted to mental health care (Heilbrun et al., 2014).
The practitioner found that the person has a less amount of personal hygiene along with an aggressive behaviour towards doctor. In addition, he has absurd thinking and actions due to which he attains various safety issues as well as risk to the community people. In that case, the person does not take proper medications as well. All these led him to the admission to the mental health care(Paniagua& Yamada, 2013). For that a reason, the report is presented with an insight that will also help the practitioners in maintaining a good relationship with the patients. With the support provided by the practitioners through these processes, the patients can be able to reform their lives. (Paniagua, 2013).
The strength based assessment involves a proper combination of the strength of the individual along with three most important principles. These three principles will promote the maximum usage of informal networks for support, offers the involvement of the assertive community with the case and finally the building a strong and trustworthy relationship in between the client and its practitioner (Switzer, Dew &Bromet, 2013). Moreover, this approach is centred towards the achievement of specific desires. In that case I, as a care provider in that care home take care of the process basing upon three principles. Those principles are the physical and emotional safety, trustworthiness and the empowerment as well as skills building. Basing upon these principles we the care providers carry out the process by evaluating the uniqueness of the individual, their real choices, their attitudes and rights along with the dignity and respect of the patients. In all these process the principles can get successful by having an effective communication with the patient in a positive and realistic manner.
The assessment paper focuses on the procedure by which the recovery is carried out in the mental health care centre. In that process I work as a nursing staff or the care provider in the care centre. Basically while dealing with the patients I take care of every possible standard to establish recovery therapy to the patients admitted in our care home. Therefore the aspects of the concept of recovery therapy described in this assessment paper somehow matches with our care home. But on the flip side there are also various dissimilarities. The practitioners in our care home only take care of the patients by ignoring the families or relatives. They only deal with the patients to heal them by not building any strong relationship. Though the process by which they treat the mental patients are the same as described below but they carry forward it in their own process. At the same time I take care of going through the proper process staying within my limits. For that reason from my personal experience I can say that the care home should aim at preserving and enabling the full life potential of the patient. In addition the practitioners should go through in detail about the behaviours, cognitions as well as the physiology of the patient to reach to deep root cause of his or her condition. So I can say that the treatment provided by our practitioners should be interpersonal and social which must involve the patients as well as their family members.
In that case the care centre is recommended to provide the recover therapy at several levels by ensuring and enabling the continuous evaluation of the condition of the patient. Next the patients and their family members or relatives should also evaluate their own progress which will provide them a motivation. Moreover the quality improvement activities should be transformed and developed at regular intervals by measuring the development of the patient’s condition both locally as well as nationally. Most important things that should be recommended to follow is the proper decorum of the reports of the mental health system. It should contain all the details including the education, employment, family and social relationships of the individual and all the health and wellbeing measures.
Conclusion
The write up has highlighted some basic points that showed the proper practice of mental illness and its associated cases. Further, the major focus of the write-up is the implementation of strength as well as the recovery approach in dealing with the patients in the mental health care. In addition the assessment report brings out the procedure how the care homes deal with the family members along with the patient. Therefore the report is based upon the current treatment procedure of the mental illness patients along with some process by which that can be developed to provide more fruitful services in the mental care centres.
