Well it depends. From day to day bases as people would interact with the world in different ways, however it can be said that senses perception is probably the most important out of the 5 (sight, touch, smell, taste, hearing sound). This is due people using their eyes significantly more then the rest as the world becomes more connected by the use of devices.
You tend to see lots of people from all ages stare at their phone, laptop, tablet, etc. more and more. In addition, the ads you see from a daily basses tend to catch your eye. If you were blind from birth, it would be very difficult in trying to understand the world around. Even the basics of reading and writing the most fundamental things in the educational process would be seen as a major obstacle for blind people.
Furthermore, try and think of how one cold get around in an everyday life such as daily chores, these people might need to live with a companion to help them with the rest of their lives. So by the loss of just losing one sense could affect the persons understanding and the way they perceive the world. Moreover that, they lose market value to firms as they my not be as productive or efficient compared to someone who can see.
Yet saying that, just because there is large obstacle starting you right in the face doesn’t mean you cannot over come it. It is highly possible to learn how to read if your blind even paint pictures. Plus if you are deaf there are new advances in medical field where people can get transplants and even prostatic things ear drums, or even some machinery to make a blind person see for the first time. Therefore, you should never lose hope because you are stronger than you think you are and can persevere through difficult situations. For an interesting and remarkable achievement you can look up Helen Keller she was a girl who was born blind and deaf but through her shortcomings was still able to read, write and speak (to some extent). As a result as a society we don’t have enough understanding yet.
People have faith in their sense for it to be accurate in perceiving information, yet relatively it is not as great as some other animals. For example the humans frequency range is 20-20kHz only will other animals can go beyond that like cats and dogs. So there are limitations to our senses, which means there are more things to explore around word than meets the eye.
Furthermore, they’re another reason why our senses are not very reliable is because as people we are selective to what we choose to sense and not. For example, there was a study by Chabris and Simons; where they had people watch a video and count ball bounces. But the main objective of the study is to see if the participants see the gorilla appear. Around half didn’t. This may be due to the participants being focused at the task at hand. This reminds me of a time where I was taking a psychology class. And the teacher placed items on his table and thought the class; to the end of the class he took the items off the table and ask to write down the objects. And found that things that did not belong in the classroom stand out more to the students. Yet with this study it also realizes on the persons ability to remember. So things that do standout will probably go into the short-term memory. However, the less important things would get decade in the sensory perception stage (this is a about the multi store memory model). Therefore, people would choose to remember things that hold some significance to them or are important.
In addition, as a people we are biased towards things. Where we tend to listen to one thing and forget the rest. This is normal and probably sometimes rational. This is doesn’t really say if your sense are reliable but more towards what you might do with the information. Moreover that, how we interoperate the information also can be biased. This is due to your subjective view on things, and also you may not remember the situation as it was (Bartlett’s reconstructive memory). By this by perceiving information would be different for each person and sometimes to support your cause. Such as Freud did with his 3 Giraffe study to prove his Oedipus complex. It varies from person to person, but the sense can be manipulated. This is generally factors that effect the brains ability to analyze the information.
If you were hydrated for starving your sense tend to work as well. This is due to your body no longer having the fuel need to run properly. Generally you see this with TV shoes or movies where a person in a dessert sees a lake but actual the guy was just hallucinating. This in some ways is true because when someone is deprived of basic needs the mind tends to imagine wild things. I once expired this in the Silver Award adventures journey in the duke of Edinburgh, where I was tired and low on ions; I believe I saw a vending machine that I knew was not real because I was in the forest. Even thought that it is strange example it still gets the point across. Yet in this situation my senses where manipulated by doing longs amounts of exercise. But there are other ways of influencing your sense such as usage of drugs.
For example the taking of certain drugs that effect the neurochemistry of the brain such as alcohol. When a person drinks alcohol to changes what neurotransmitters are released, it suppresses glutamate and increase GABA transmission. Therefore you get more excitation and inhibition. By this information becomes slow and large electric signals can only pass from each neuron. As a result the person who perceive less, feel less, notice less, and even remember less things from the night. By this there senses become less reliable as they don’t really focus on their surroundings or removes extraneous activates in the brain. As a result a person tends to think very little but with a lot of clarity (personally I find it ironic because they are thinking clearly about nothing). So what does this means? It means that it is very easy for a person to manipulate their own senses by the use of drugs. By this it creates questions like can we trust people whom take drugs including medication? And also is it possible to trust addicts? Furthermore if your sense or not very reliable how can eye witness statements seem as true or not (links with memory/reconstructive memory)?
In conclusion, as a society we put lots of faith into our senses to understand the world around us. However, there are certain limitations to our senses, which make them unreliable such as how your brain process information. Even though we might have seen the right thing our brains might process the information incorrectly this is seen with people who have physiological problems such as visual agnosia or even prosopagnosia. Furthermore, external things such as drugs can manipulate the senses. By this it tampons with a persons brain chemistry and changes the way we think.
