Assessment task 1 is about capturing your attitudes and beliefs around different diverse community groups. It is about reflecting on how your attitudes and beliefs might have changed over the years.
Most people find that their values, attitudes and beliefs change overtime.
If you think about your life growing up as a child and reflect on the life you have today – the one that you have shaped and created for yourself, think about how perhaps your attitudes and beliefs have evolved and changed over the past ten years?
My Grandfather fought in World War II – His experiences, beliefs and attitudes influenced me as a young child growing up – it was only until I became older I started to shift ‘those thoughts’ and become more educated that my attitudes and beliefs about a particular race of people changed.
Circle which two groups you are choosing to reflect on below.
oPeople with disability (PWD)
oPeople from non – English speaking backgrounds (NESB)
oAboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people (ATSI)
oLesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersexed community (LGBTQI)
My attitude towards two of the mentioned diverse groups that is the PWD and the ATSI has undergone many of the changes as I grew up. My father being doctor, used to treat many disabled people. I often visited his hospitals and I used to see many of the disabled people who were mentally and physically retarded. I thought that these people are really at a very poor condition and there is hardly anything that we can do for them but now as I am grown up I know how to help these people and support them to lead normal lives (Silverman et al., 2015). My view on the aboriginals has also undergone many changes (Craig & Bigby, 2015). My grandfather and many of his colleagues, who worked in the Australian Government, did not really seem to favour the indigenous people. There was a gap between the Torres strait people and non indigenous people like us and our neighbours. However as I am an adult now I have learned that they Torres strait people are just like us and they deserve to be free individuals. There must be no discrimination between people based on their culture or their historical context.
When I was a child I often visited my father in his hospital and I thought that the disabled people are really helpless and unlucky. They will never be able to live normally like us. My grandfather and his colleagues were respectable govt. Employees of Australia and they always had distastes for the aboriginals. As a result of which there was this influence on m that the aboriginals are something different and are not like us. They are bad and we must maintain a distance from them.
I am into the medical profession now and I am also part of many NGOs and other charity organizations that work for the welfare of the poor and disabled people. I also try to be a part of many active social campaigns for the right of women and the rights of the isolated groups as well. I have seen that these disabled people are not really in a helpless condition. The only thing that they need is cooperation and proper support. We must help them with all possible means and must give them new directions so that they can educate themselves and work and support their own livelihood. I have realized that there are so many things that we can actually do rather than just being sympathetic to them. I have been treating so many patients who are blind. Being blind does not mean that they cannot do anything in life. I have seen how the blind schools teach their students and help them to get settled in life. Braille is used to teach the blind people and they can also get degrees and good jobs. Apart from this, they can also learn the art of handicrafts and singing. They can teach the same to so many other people and can lead their lives happily. As I am in to a hospital treating patients I often have witnessed how the Aboriginals suffer from many diseases. They are also denied timely medical opportunities. The hospital beds are often kept reserved for the indigenous people. However I try my best to solve the disparity. Being doctors it is our duty to treat patients of all classes and culture. There must be not discrimination between people.
1.“I’m happy to have a diverse group of friends”
“Their food or music is just so interesting”
2.Assimilation
2.“I’m not bothered as long as what other people do does not effect me.”
3.Tolerance
3.”If you don’t like it go back to where you came from”
4.Enjoyment of Diversity-
4.“Let’s make them all the same – like us:
The vacancies for the job posts will be kept open for all the people coming from different ethnic backgrounds.
The rules and laws of maintain a friendly and respectable nature towards one another must be followed at all costs.
None of the employees must be bullying each other.
Being a doctor by profession, I conduct many training sessions where I try to impart this knowledge to all that there must be no discrimination between the patients based on their culture or their ethnicity. The aboriginals also will have to be provided timely and proper medical facilities.
The beds must not be kept reserved for only the indigenous people.
Medicines and food must be distributed to the aboriginals at free of cost.
I would speak to all my co workers and my subordinates as well

Safety issues for the clients when the new staff member went off to prepare his ritual for lunch?
If 1 staff member is left with the charge of assisting 3 clients then it will cause serious safety issues for clients. 1 staff is not sufficient to maintain the cleanliness and safety of all the clients and might make hasted. This will make the staff member make haste and he will suffer from the lack of sufficient time. This will harm the personal hygiene and the sanitation of the clients and they will suffer.
As the clients are disabled they cannot look after their own needs properly and will suffer a lot.
The disabled people might get restless and will naturally not know what to do. Moreover there will only be one staff to look after them and he might not be able to render equal and proper timely care to all 3 staff members.
Considerations in relation to his cultural needs that would need to be discussed with the new staff member around his rituals at lunch?
Itas to be discussed that with due respect to his religion and his culture, he must remember his job responsibilities as well. He has to remember that he is serving the disabled clients and this is really a very sensitive issue. The clients are depending upon him so; it must be his utmost duty to make sure that he is always available to the clients.
The next thing is that he cannot be given more opportunities or advantages than his clients. He will somehow have to manage his rituals and prayer timings so that he does not take longer time than the assigned lunch break duration.
Consideration that could be introduced to balance the new staff person’s needs with the needs of the clients when they are on an outing?
As he is new, it will take him some time to understand the rules and regulations of the office. So, he can be given some considerations like dividing the long lunch break into two small breaks. He can use one break for his prayers and can use the next for eating. This will neither hurt his cultural values nor hurt the clients in any way.
There has to be some back up or extra staffs kept arranged for taking up charge during his absence. It will be his duty to clearly transfer knowledge and explain his duties to the one taking up his charge in his absence. He has to make sure that his client is not being left alone while he is away for a long time.
people and the department they belong to that you could seek assistance from in addressing this issue in the workplace around cultural diversity.
This issue can be addressed by talking to the HR department and the HR managers who will be appointing more staffs and assort them as alternative or backups.
All the staffs in general must be addressed and explained that no one will bully each other for one’s culture but at the same time all of the employees will have to abide by the business ethics as well. The rules will be equal for all.
The employee forum and the forum head has to be updated about the same issue as well.
