Terms of Reference: This report is giving a reflection on teamwork on a class presentation. We worked as a team to succeed our class presentation. We researched, gleaned data from various sources and finally came up with a decent write up to present before other classmates. Group presentation presents several challenges in the event teamwork fails to work among members, perhaps due to inability to manage conflicts (Theobald, 2013. P.1). Indeed, the presentation was thoroughly engaging, and as a group, we believed that teamwork would prepare us for future team playing at organizations we shall be employed.
Background: We were a group of five people, and we were tasked to develop a campaign online that would encourage many people attend celebrations a day before the beginning of a new year. It was engaging work, because we were supposed to raise some funds for some charity organizations. In addition, we worked in a group of just five people and fortunately we planned and executed the task itself decently. We developed an online directory that would encourage people across the globe to attend parties organized on NYE. After budgeting, thinking together and putting our minds together we delivered a document presenting our campaign persuade people across the world to attend NYE celebrations at least to open a new year in a good mood.
Belbin: According to Belbin a team can only be able to work when the roles or obligations of every team member are well defined (Belbin, 2015, P.6). It is true that we ensured that every member is active in the group. To be candid, we believed in working together, because that was the only way that we could deliver quality work (Watson, Gallagher & Armstrong, 2013. P.4). It is also true that we were very compatible as a group and that is why we never experienced any single conflict in the group.
In all honesty, I now admit that what helped me gain presentation skills were the abilities I developed. First, I researched adequately on the creation of a mission statement. I remember that when we reached that section, it seemed difficult to define the mission statement of the project, but because I researched it, I found it possible to create and present that part in class. In essence, when a group works together and every member has a role to play, then the presentation would always be an excellent one (Belbin, 2015, P.9). In a nutshell, it is crystal clear to us that what succeeded our presentation were our organization and the proper relationship we created amongst ourselves.
However, as a group what we did was assigning several roles to various individuals, but because uniformity was essential in our presentation, every member collaborated. We conducted meetings together and discussed every issue we tackled on the presentation document. It was a class performance; it was important that we share the roles and later meet for deliberations, which indeed helped us reach one decision (Keen, 2014).
Kolb Learning Styles: David Kolb believes that for learning to be effective, learners should be able to help each other. As a group, we felt that we did not have equal learning abilities, but we wanted to work as a team (Kolb, 2014, p.8). To have every member of the group accommodated, we corrected reasonably each other and shared ideas that enabled each of us to learn from one another. Indeed, teamwork should be able to allow creative freedom; this means that every member should be allowed to express their ideas, and it is from that that team members acquire knowledge.
Indeed, the learning styles of Kolb helped us understand the divergent opinions, feelings of every member during group discussion and generally, we were accommodating to every member, and that is why our presentation was fully organized and coordinated (Kolb, 2014, P.3). Every member knew the role they were to play to succeed the presentation.
Tuckman: Tuckman underscores the importance of leadership, and in this case, we had a group leader who would convene meetings and bring the discussion of ordering (Martin, 2006. P.2).We us reasonable people, but it was comprehensible that we needed a group leader to give us direction to succeed our preparation for the presentation (Knight, 2016, P.1). Also, understand that in a group sometimes it is hard to make decisions, but having a leader who is orderly; it would be easy for him to encourage members to storm and see the way forward. Indeed, as team members, we stormed, met together and informed each other on the right way to follow as far as our project was concerned.
Personal SWOT Analysis: Personal SWOT enables group member to examine their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (Amory, 2012, P.1). I used SWOT analysis to identify my strengths and weaknesses, by first understanding what both two words mean. Strengths are my abilities or capacity to behave and conduct myself in a certain way. In this presentation, I determined my strengths by considering my communication skills, ability to stand before people and general organization. Also, on my weaknesses, I established them when I failed to answer or respond to questions satisfactorily (Amory, 2012, P.1). Further, I discovered my weaknesses, when my group members start correcting me. Indeed, I am an excellent communicator, I am confident, and I am also courageous. Regarding weaknesses, I do not like being corrected, and I am also a poor listener sometimes.
Ansoff Matrix: In our presentation, we believed in diversification, and that is why we target the entire world in this presentation. We aim to reach various people and encourage them to party before the year ends. Indeed, the matrix is about diversification and market penetration, and our presentation is determined to reach as many people as possible (Bachmeier, 2013 P.1).
SMART: In our performance, we set measurable objectives and ensured that they are achievable, realistic and time-bound.
Personal Learning Experience: In all honesty, this presentation enabled me to learn the importance of teamwork. With teamwork, all problems regarding are quickly solved. Indeed, learning is easier when people work as a team as opposed to working alone. Indeed, I enjoyed, brainstorming as a group and exchange new ideas with each other.
Feedback: In teamwork, there is immediate feedback. A member asks a question, and members would quickly respond. To be candid, working as a group makes learning easier and as a result, it is easy to perform well. It is a group presentation, and the fact that we worked as a team we quickly got positive feedback. Our performance was praised to be organized, and we were focused on the main agenda of our presentation.
Application of Feedback: the immediate feedback one gets from a presentation is helpful in the sense that it enables a person to look into themselves. Looking into myself, it means that I assess myself and see how I can improve my weaknesses to become a better presenter. The point is that I use feedback to improve myself and see how I can improve hard work so that my grades can better.
Conclusion:
In all honesty, my experience in the presentation was excellent. It has helped me improve my communication skills (Bradbury, 2016.P.3). Also, I have become more confident in myself, because this group built my learning skills. I have also learned that teamwork makes every task easy. Ideas from different members are shared, and in the end, a problem is solved. I like the synergy that comes with group work.
In future, I would always value teamwork because I believe that mass success can only be achieved if people work together and help each other to solve problems (Mccarthy & Hatcher, 2013. P.3). Indeed, teamwork makes a presentation successful and I would in future consider working in a group, and most fundamentally our group was sizeable enough. Indeed, a sizeable group is easy to control, therefore making group work a success.
Specific Objective: In the future, I would recommend that the project targets a small market (Richman, 2016. P.1). In this project, we aimed at seeing people across the world to start attending NYE parties. It is important to target a small region and think of expanding from that region to other areas as opposed to aiming at the entire world population.
Measurable Objectives: To have a measurable project in future, the objectives set must be able to be measured.
Achievable Objectives: The next project should be objective, and that is only possible if a small market niche established.
Realistic goals: For the aims of the project to be realistic, then the members must be accurate and take actions that are within their means.
Time-bound: For a project to be time bound ensure that all the objectives set in the plan are specific, measurable, achievable and realistic. All members undertaking a project like this one should always ensure that they carry out their activities within a set time. A project has completion date; therefore the members must work within the set deadline.
