An average day in the life of the freelance writer, if such a thing exists, can consist of occasional bursts of productivity and frequent bouts of distracted activity. This fact explains why some days are euphoric and highly enjoyable while others seem more like trying to run in treacle with a pair of Neil Armstrong’s boots on the feet. It’s all part of the process, of course, but managing the ups and downs can often prove difficult.

Working from home can be a wonderfully freeing experience, especially if output levels are relatively good. There’s no need to commute to work, which can save a ton of money as well as a lot of unnecessary stress, and it’s often easy to balance a work commitment with time for family members and, should you require one, a social life as well. Anyone who has never worked from home before probably thinks of it as some kind of utopian existence in which you rattle off a little work, watch some television then work a little more before sitting in the garden for the afternoon sipping a dry Martini.

There may be one or two freelancers who think of this as a normal day, of course, but I haven’t met one yet, although I keep looking.

The truth is that home working is great when compared to a day in the rat race, especially for people who prefer to have no human contact at all.

In the home, however, there are plenty of distractions which can get in the way of a productive day, and when that happens it can soon start to have an effect on the individual’s earning power.

An External Office Could Be the Answer – But Not for Everyone

In recent years, the relative cost of leasing office space has dropped dramatically, a fact that explains why a growing number of writers are choosing to rent a small workspace that’s free of the distractions of home. For a surprisingly low price it’s possible to have regular access to a quiet office in which you could get back to being a highly efficient and exceedingly productive entity once again.

As always, there’s no right or wrong way for any of us to work to the best of our abilities, but it’s reassuring to know that an affordable alternative to the home isn’t far away. The increase in working output could easily justify the extra expense, especially if you’re one of those writers for whom silence really is golden.

Many of us require nothing more than a quiet environment, a desk and four bare walls to get our jobs done to the best of our abilities, so renting a small, basic office space could be a lucrative strategy.
