Website web design is the method through which he designers design and develop a website that is able to respond to the behavior of the user and screen size based environment. This makes the website look good for all the devices of different screens. The HTML and CSS technology is used for the development of the responsive website designing. Taken as an example, if the website is responsive then the site can be open in large display like com computer and small display like mobile device.
The selected website is makezine. The website has the mission of empowering the makers all around the whole world. The website embraces creativity, innovation and learning in order to improve the community and generating better future. The website is focused upon helping the people (young to old) who are interested embracing their talent for creating new things and finding innovative solutions to different answers regarding creativity.
The study is consisting of different aspects of reviewing the makezine website in the context of responsive website designing. In order to do that the detailed review of the website along with analysis is provided. The google chrome simulator has been used for carrying out the analysis. Moreover, the description of other tools (same functionality as google chrome simulator) has been provided within the study. Based on the collected data a detailed recommendation has been provided.
The website is concentrated in the DIY or do it yours self and do it with other or DIWO projects. From the home page the purpose of the website can be understood. The home page is consisting of various videos and articles that of different DIY project. The color combination is very decent and the users does not get distracted form the main content because of the color selection. At the top left corner of the website, the logo of makezine has been provided.
As it can be seen within the figure 1, the menu of the website is in the header. The website allows the users to login so that the activity of individual registered users can be recorded. The website consist of advertisement in the home page also. If one of the article is clicked then a new page is opened which hold information regarding the article. Taken as an example, after clicking on the “This Week in Making: iPhone 7 Headphone Hacks, 3D Printed Homes, and Lego Engineering”, a new page opened that consisted of four different topics. The user can get involved with the website’s mission through the link provided in the menu called “get involved”. At the right upper comer there is a search option for the users. The users can search for different topic through inputting the interested technology or craft name. Take as an example, after inputting the technology name ‘Bluetooth’ the following webpage was opened. The fraction of the webpage has been visualized in the figure 2.
The website has also a footer that holds the links like about us, make share, follow us, projects, and contribute and many more. The footer is same throughout the whole website. Each of the project is consisting of detailed description of the component which allows the user to gather idea regarding the raw element required for the project and the process as well as schematic diagram (if any). The website allows the users to subscribe to the website and save the projects. In order to subscribe to the website, there are three options for the user such as all access, print only and digital only and the price of the subscriptions are $39.99, $34.99 and $24.99 respectively.
The best feature within the makezine website is the responsiveness. After analyzing the website so far it has been identified that the website can be opened in different devices (of course the device must have internet enable and browser). At present, the users like to access the favorite sites through the mobile devices. It is because, the mobile devices provide access to the sites anywhere if internet is available. Using computers in different places or mobile locations is not possible. This issue is resolved through the mobile devices. The responsiveness of the website allows the user to access the website through various small screen or had held devices.
Website Goal: the website has described the goals properly and effectively. The mission has been stated within the ‘about us’ page. The description of the website objectives has been communicated with the users in the page descriptively. All the pages of website is able to fulfill the website objective. As mentioned above, the website holds the links to different projects that consist of detailed description of project.
Smooth Loading of Website: The website load smoothly in different devices and does not take much time. The reason behind is the website is actually responsive not adaptive. If decent internet connection is available, the website can be accessed easily.
Same Quality Images at All Screen Size: In case of various websites, the quality of the images gets low because of the usage of bitmaps. In case of makezine, the image quality remains the same if it is accessed from different screen sized devices.
Highlighting Brand Image: The website has successfully focused on representing the brand image through the content and website design. The selected images and media is perfect for supporting the brand image as well as improving it. The website designers has restructured the dewing principle to attracting the users instead of following new trends blindly.
Reaching the Target Audience: From the promotions to the media content, all the things are purposefully done for attracting the target audience. The target audience has no age limit, the only criteria is that the audience is interested in making new things. The response from the users and success of the site makes it clear that it has successfully targeted audience.
The Fonts Are Clear at All Devices: The fonts of the site is not restricted to a single device (in this case PC). The fonts that has been used within the website can be clearly seen in the mobile devices of different operating system. If the PC front were used then not all the operating system could recognized it.
No Extra Space: There are no additions space between the contents. These allows the user to read the content easily and make the website attractive.
Followed Responsive Design Instead of Adaptive: The website designers has followed the design principles of responsive web design instead of adaptive web design approach. In case of responsive web design approach, the website will be designed in such a way that it can be accessed from various devices. The quality of the website has been enhanced through the use of responsive web design approach.
Usage of Vector Images: The vector images has been selected for designing the makezine website. The use of vector images has made it possible for the site to visualize the images with same quality for different screens. This allows the users to access the page content with same quality in mobile devices. Resizing the images with the CSS is a well-known process but the quality of the image does not remain same as the vector images.
Usage of Web fonts Instead of W System Fonts: If the system fonts are used then the font will be limited to the computer systems. The system fonts are basically responsive to the operating system. If other operating systems does not support the font, it can be seen on every other devices. The website has used web fonts. This allows the user to see the font in various devices. It allows the website to attract new users and enhances the user satisfaction.
No Item Was Fixed: In case of responsive web design, the size of header or similar content can be maintained through not fixing any content. As the responsive sites are accessed mainly through the mobile devices, fixing the header or similar component can result in reducing the screen size. This kind of issue is not present in makezine website. It improves the accessibility and user satisfaction.
Light Website Design: Light design of website is a crucial part of whole design process. If the website gets too much time load then the whole design mat not impact positively on the user. As the website has been designed lightly, the loading time of the website is very low. The main components of the website appear first within the site. This allows a user with low internet speed to access the main features of the site.
No Usage of Additional Spaces: The website designers of makezine did not use the extra spaces between the contents. These allows the user to read the content easily and make the website attractive. Additional spaces within a site makes the user assume that the website does not have much content. Makezine is consisting of numerous amount of content and thus it does not use any additional spaces.
Responsive Navigation: patterns of navigation within the responsive website is a critical task to handle. The website has maintained the consistency of website look, experience and feel.
Usage of PX instead of Percentage: The website is designed in such a way that it uses PX instead of percentage. The PX works well in the responsive web pages but often this malfunctions. The issues that arises because of the use of PX, can be mitigated if percentage is being used. Often this leads to user dissatisfaction.
Absence of Flow in Website: The flow within the website access is not present in strong way. There are various things that can be done for maintaining the flow in website design.
Participant One: The first participant is a class mate. The participant is twenty two years old male. He is familiar with the website design processes. He also works as a freelancer website designer for a local small organization. As a designer he knows that a responsive website must be able to perform same in different devices. He used his mobile device, an iPhone 6s to review the website. According to him, the website functions were very effective. The communication was fluent throughout the whole website. He also stated that the images was clear in a mobile device which is a very crucial factor in responsive web designing. The participant also accessed the makezine website through the computer browser. The website, according to him, was very light thus took a very little time to load. The color combination was so decent that he was only concerned about the contents about the page. This allowed him to concentrate on the page objective.
Participant Two: The second participant is a neighbor. She is thirty nine years old woman. She works at a private organization at a position of department head. She accessed the website through computer system. According to her the website has communicated the mission very easily. The objective of the website was very clear throughout the whole website. She is also very interested in creating new things. She stated that the contents of the website was very clear and understandable. The navigation through the website was clear and efficient. She said that the internet connection often gets low from her residence. As the website takes low time to load, she can access the site in slow internet speed. Though the full website may not be visible but the main functions will be clear to her.
480×640: The website has been reviewed in the 480×640 screen size.
700×960: The website has been reviewed in the 700×960 screen size.
400×640: The website has been reviewed in the 400×640 screen size.
200×320: The website has been reviewed in the 200×320 screen size.
First of all a conclusion to the review of both the participant is required. Both the participants agreed on the fact that the website has successfully represented their mission to the users. The navigation within the website is effective and efficient. The website images and contents are clear for different sized screen resolution.
As per the review done within the website, all the strong points that both the participants has described matches. As per the review done within the study, the website is able to allow the users to communicate with it efficiently. The website can also be accessed in very short time being a light weight site. This reviews also matches with the participant review. The responsive of the website is effective.
The google chrome simulator allows a designer to simulate mobile devices with the use of device mode. Through the use of google chrome device simulator, the mobile first device mode website can be built ad analyzed. The google chrome simulator allows the designer to simulate the website in various devices. In addition to that it allows the designer to test the website in different customer screen resolutions. Analyzing CSS media queries is also possible in chrome simulator.
Advantages: The advantages of google chrome simulator are as following.
Disadvantages: The disadvantages are as following.
IPAD PEEK: This site is mostly popular for testing the site in the most acclaimed tablet on the market, iPad. This page does not support any other device rather than iPad. Access URL: https://ipadpeek.com/
Mobile Phone Emulator: It is one of the most effective and well-known phone emulators. The numbers of mobile platforms that can be simulated within the site is huge. The error in the representation is very low.
Flexible Grid Based Layouts: The website will be consisting of header, logo, navigation, body, content, sidebar content, footer, copyright and social links. A fixed grid will be generated at the first step. Responsive outline is tied in with relinquishing a touch of control and figuring out how to grasp that. The principal thing the study have to do is flexible up our plan. It would be very hard and take unreasonably long to work out each and every size of the site and think of the ideal design for every width. Rather the study locate the real purposes of progress and after that let everything squish and extend between them.
Making the Website Flow Efficient: Different kinds of navigation will be considered while developing the website. Prior to designing content inventory and content reference wireframes will be developed regarding the mobile, desktop and tablet.
Conclusion:
From the above study it is clear that the makezine website is responsive for the big and medium screen size scenes not for small screens like 200*320 resolution. The website has been developed through following most of the RWD principles. The contents of the site is not properly visible or structured in the small screens. In this study, the investigation displayed in which setting seemed “Responsive Web Design“. With the advancement of cell phones, distinctive size of screen showed up. At that point the investigation characterized what it precisely is and how it offered an explanation to that tricky. Lastly, the examination demonstrated the primary procedures used to make responsive sites with a couple of cases to outline them. Since the investigation attempted those systems, the examination can state that they are truly productive and simple to actualize. The study has properly analyzed the responsiveness of the website. Through trusting the google chrome simulator is not right but the results that has been gathered through the analysis is reliable enough for coming to the conclusion that the site needs to improve its flow more efficient. The review of the google chrome simulator and other emulators has provided the idea regarding the working of these mobile device simulators. This sites makes the designer’s job of testing the responsiveness of the sites easy. It is essential to check the site’s responsiveness through various sites as each of the simulators has at least one flaw.
