Beidas et al. (2012) stated that most of the women have to be victimized for inhuman domestic violence. The stereotyped concept is still prevailing in the realm of society that women should keep themselves aloof from being independent in both economically and socially. In order to prioritize the social norms and cultural rituals, women get hardly times to expose their skills and talents. Many eminent scholars have provided several opinions regarding the role of women in overcoming domestic violence. In addition, a large number of acts and regulations have also been implemented with the help of which women can protect themselves. Among the necessary domestic violence policies the name of violence against women act of 1994, domestic violence arrest policy and domestic violence civil protection order is most prominent.
Fife et al. (2014) stated that regulations and laws even fail to protect the violence happening on women. Physical assault, sexual assault, humiliation has become a major concern. Therefore, a large number of domestic women have to lose a drastic consequence. This particular study has focused to provide a brief scenario. As per the case scenario it has been observed that an individual woman had to face merciless exploitation from her husband both psychologically as well as mentally. Being completely de-motivated and hopeless, the women had decided to visit a counselor for receiving advice. Therefore, in this particular study, an in-depth analysis has been presented about the role of a counselor to motivate the victims. The study has focused to discuss the theatrical concept of counseling critically.
Hislop, Avers and Brown (2013) commented that counseling is the professional way of guiding or advising an individual to overcome any kind of challenges facing while leading a successful life. In order to become a successful counselor an individual has to be possessed with of the relevant features. Gathering necessary data, case study and historical background about the clients is one of the major responsibilities of an eminent counselor. Among various kinds of recognizable counseling process the techniques of personal interview, aptitudes and logical reasoning tests, interpersonal communication session is most familiar.
However, Joyce and Sills (2014) stated that personal interview is the most convenient technique with the help of which an efficient counselor can collect maximum about client. With the help of an effective personal interview, both the sender and the receiver would be able to make a face-to-face communication for receiving immediate response from each other. The primary objective of a counselor is to direct the client towards new pathways so that this particular individual can move forward to live a new span of life rather than being restricted within the past. While counseling a particular individual, a responsible counselor should have an in-depth overview about the client’s background such as social, economic, family, cultural and so many.
An individual while feeling extremely de-motivated or overwhelmed with joy and excitement tends to consult a counselor. While communication with a particular person an efficient counselor has to follow several counseling skills. Five most prominent skills include listening skills, empathy, genuineness, concreteness, interpretation. These kinds of counseling skills are primarily used to encourage and to give confidence to the client so that they can get back to the new path of life. McLeod (2013) stated that the skill of listening implies that counselor would focus to direct the client after listening necessary information from the client. While applying the listening skill counselor should focus on two primary factors that include attending and observing. The method of attending skill implies eye contact, distraction, encouraging verbalizations, observing the body language as well as postures. While making an effective communication with a client, the counselor has to focus on the body language of that specific individual with the help of which counselor can understand the mental state of the person.
Miller and Rollnick (2014) opined that body language is highly important to understand the needs and mentality of the student. On the other hand, observing is one of the most effective parts with the help of which the counselor can understand the mental state of clients from verbal and non-verbal expression. Verbal expression implies the victim is flexible enough to communicate with the counselor without having any specific communication barrier. On the other hand, non-verbal expression includes facial expression, written expression. Non-verbal expression is not sufficient enough to identify the issues of clients as opined by (Nwadinigwe & Azuka-Obieke, 2012). Empathy is the kind of learning skill with the help of which counselor can perceive the experience of clients and based on the experience the direction can be provided. In this particular listening skill as well, the counselor can use both verbal and non-verbal interaction to evaluate the experience of client. This specific learning skill enables the counselor to direct the client by amplifying the own experience of the client for motivating the victims.
Genuineness is the kind of learning skill with the help of which the counselor intends to relate the relation between out word and inner feeling. Pedersen (2013) stated that it has been observed that victims sometimes fail to express their own feeling due to linguistic barriers or psychological barriers. As a result, the counselor has to face a major different between outer word of the victim and inner feeling. With the help of this specific learning skill the counselor intends to find out the issues faced by the individual by maintaining an intense interpersonal communication. Acceptance, respect and conveying message are the three major components based on which genuineness is dealing with. Pirlott et al. (2012) argued that an individual victim while visiting a counselor due to any personal issue expects respect and manner from the counselor based on which the patient can feel comfortable to communicate with the counselor. Otherwise, the counselor would never be able to collected real data regarding the client. The victim would intend to unlock the heart only when the person would get co-operation from the counselor.
Concreteness is the type of learning skill that directly focuses on the facts, feelings, abstracts and generalizations. This particular learning skill implies that counselor tends to enter into the fact and issues primary before evaluating any case study or family background of the clients. Ryan et al. (2012) opined that concreteness is possessed with some of the specific advantages and disadvantages. This specific learning skill is not very much time consuming. The victim does not have to feel monotony while maintaining the counseling process. At the same time, it is undeniable that concreteness is possessed with some of the major drawbacks as well. Without evaluating case studies or historical backgrounds, the counselor may have to face innumerable difficulties to provide proper suggestion or to give appropriate direction.
Interpretation is the learning skill with the help of which the counselor likes to interpret the expressions provided by the victim. In this specific learning skill, the role of a counselor is to get an in-depth overview about the entire issue faced by the client. Based on the clients and their issue, the counselor likes to interpret or explain in a better way so that the client can understand the previous mistake. While following the learning skill, the counselor has to face some specific steps. Keeping the interpretation short, brief and logical filled with empathy is one of the most significant steps. Siegenthaler, Munder and Egger (2012) commented that making the entire interpretation in favor of the client beyond going any kind of personal attack is another step. While interpreting the concept the counselor has to use the language with which the client is most familiar. The purpose of the counselor is to show a proper direction to the clients. Therefore, linguistic barrier is one of the most effective factors that make a gap between the service providers and service users. While using the skill of interpretation, the counselor should follow these major steps.
In this particular study, a transcript of fifteen minutes has been presented. The entire scenario is based on the counseling of a victimized women inhumanly tortured by her husband. After taking heavy dose of alcohol consumption as merciless torture by husband, the woman has gone completely heartbroken. She needs a proper guidance of a counselor based on which she can get back the flow of life. With the help of 15 minutes conversation, the study has focused to provide a transcript. The primary purpose of this transcript is to motivate and counsel the victim for getting her back towards the new path of life.
Counselor: Hello Jane! How are you?
Jane (victim): I am not good. Completely heartbroken (sighs)
Counselor: I can understand.., relax. Firstly, please consider me as a friend (stretches his/her hands for handshake) and unlock your hear without any hesitation.
Jane: Can you please provide a solution? (On the verge of sobbing)
Counselor: Tell me one thing…do you like doing creative things such as handicrafts, blog writings, even counseling?
Jane: Yes I do, in fact I am from English Literature background. So I love creative writings.
Counselor: Very good (smiles). Now coming back to the point…I would suggest you to look into the world in a changed and new vision. You as an educated woman have immense responsibility to serve something new to the society except devoting your entire day being a mere house wife. Economic dependence is one of the major factors due to which the persons like your husband like to expose their ruthless attitude. These kinds of persons believe that women have nothing to do except restricting within a curtain. However, economic dependence is highly important first of all to make a self-entity.
Jane: Got your point, but how would I be involved myself within work as I do not have any work experience (looking confused). Moreover, if I get involved within some activities, the mentality of my husband is not going to be changed. He will continue to torture me and to impose on me alcohol consumption (ashamed and panicked).
Counselor: May be you are partially correct. But whenever you will be dependent economically and will have contribution towards your family in terms of economy, the scenario will be changed economically (confident uttering).
Jane: How (confused)?
Counselor: Whenever you will be involved within work, your entire lifestyle will be changed. You will get to know people of different cultures and attitudes and their lifestyles. Not only that, you will be able to enhance your skills and knowledge as well if you are associated with a particular industry.
Jane: I am getting motivated (smiles)
Counselor: One more suggestion I would like to give you. You should be concerned about some of the relevant acts and regulations on domestic violence. You should have proper knowledge on the violence against women act of 1994, domestic violence arrest policy, domestic violence civil protection order, policies against sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and so many. These particular policies would help you immensely to take an immediate action against your husband (confident uttering).
Jane: I am getting inspired from your guidance (leans towards the table and smiles)
Counselor: Don’t lose your confidence while you are in difficult situation. Adverse situation is needed in our life to make us more confident and efficient. If you did not face the difficult situation created by your husband, you could not have to think about enhancing your knowledge on regulations. Therefore, we should face challenging situation to groom up ourselves with the situations.
Jane: You have truly said (nods her head). From today onwards I shall prepare myself towards the new path of life. I shall focus on those acts and laws with the help of which I can protect myself.
Counselor: Yes, at the same time one permanent job is also necessary to remain you busy in your daily life. At the same time, economic dependence is highly important to create a self-entity. Use your brain and feel the taste of globalization. You should utilize potency. Being educated women you should not inhale merciless torture from your husband. Rather you would have to be rebellious to become a role model for other women.
Jane: From today onwards I shall view the World in a new perspective. I shall accept the adverse situation to make me more confident and matured (looks confident).
Counselor: My best wish is always with you (smiles). Grow yourself up for the new journey. Don’t get afraid of anyone while you are truthful.
Jane: Thank you so much for rendering the ray of hope in my life (smiles).
While maintaining a counseling session, an individual counselor has to face several challenges. The person has faced challenges due to two important reasons. Sommers-Flanagan and Sommers-Flanagan (2015) opined that counselor is possessed with some major limitations with the help of which the individual had to face difficulties to conduct the session. On the other hand, the client has failed to co-operate in collecting proper data and information to the counselor due to several barriers. As a result, the counselor had to face barriers to conduct the entire counseling session in a systematic way. In this specific study, five major limitations of the counselor and five challenges faced by the counselor at the workplace would be discussed.
While conducting the session it has been observed that the counselor has focused to apply direct method rather than interactive method. For an example, the entire counseling session is based on the counselor’s own way of approach and experience. The victimized woman has received least opportunity to expose her experience. In this particular session, the counselor has used the learning skill of empathy where the entire issue of the woman has been taken with proper feeing and sympathy (Thompson, 2015). While using this specific learning skill, the victim has used non-verbal communication as well. On the other hand, the counselor is not flexible enough to tackle non-verbal communication appropriately. In addition, the personality of the counselor is introvert. As a result, the women while interacting with the counselor regarding the issues she had faced at the home of her husband, faced barriers to communicate properly. Trotzer (2013) stated that an efficient counselor has to maintain proper research and development session before communicating and meet with the client. It has also been observed that the counselor has collected least data and information regarding the women before interacting with her.
Vacc and Loesch (2013) opined that counseling is the systematic process that enables a counselor to gather historical data and information regarding the client before visiting that person. In this specific session, the counselor should have gathered sufficient information on the family background of the husband. In order to evaluate the reason for being so much rude towards his wife, the counselor should make an in-depth analysis regarding the case history of the husband. If the husband tends to face any kind of psychological dilemma, the individual person can be sent for a proper treatment. Therefore, this is a kind of way out for a woman based on which the entire issue can be overcome. Therefore, these are the necessary limitations that the counselor was possessed while dealing with the session. The challenges that the counselor had faced while implementing various learning skill at the counseling session include language barrier. The counselor had to use an efficient translator to interpret the language of client. Interpretation learning skill will be effective only when the counselor would be successful to interpret the language used by the victimized woman.
While maintaining the personal interview session, the counselor has faced innumerable challenges. The woman was not flexible enough to unlock her heart. She was very much soft spoken. From the above mentioned transcript, it has been observed that the victim hardly spoke at the various questions of the counselor (Webb et al., 2012). As a result, the counselor had to face difficulties to collect data and information to identify the actual issue. On the other hand, psychological barrier was one of the major challenges based on which the counselor had to face difficulties to implement listening learning skill at the session. The woman belonging to different cultures and religious background failed to understand the essence of genuineness learning skill.
Conclusion:
The importance of counseling and its major impact on the mind of victim is the primary concern of this particular study. Various critics from different age group have provided their own opinion regarding this particular topic. Based on the scenario provided in assignment, the study has focused to conduct a counseling session of fifteen minutes for the purpose of motivating the victimized women towards new path of life. Fife most effective learning skills have also been used throughout the entire study in order to point out the numerous aspects of counseling. The study has also depicted major limitations and challenges for implementing various counseling skills at the session.
