I sometimes find myself gazing off over the giant deep blue waters called the Pacific Ocean. It is as wide and far as the eye can see. The dazzling yellow and orange sun begins to fall from the sky as the day comes to an end, casting beautiful shades of pink, purple, and gold onto the white capped swells drifting toward the coastline. I am sitting the edge of a cliff which once extended hundreds of feet out towards the ocean and has since been washed away from devastating storm surges and treacherous waves.
Sunset Cliffs is a place that I come to escape from reality, to dream about the future, and to relax after a long week. I sit underneath a massive palm tree that has weathered these storms for years. The palm tree stands about 50 feet tall and reminds me of an old skipper that would not abandon ship even in the most dangerous of hurricanes with gale force winds.
The tree is aged and tattered and has carvings of people’s names all around it that once frequented this very same spot as I do.
Below are jagged rocks that stand fearless against the raging waters that pound against them thousands of times a day. The rocks stand strong and valiant as the waves march in like solders. It reminds me of ancient battles. The wave clash against the rocks and the spray of the water explodes into the air as if the rocks were the shields of the Roman Empire.
Only this battle is never ending. The spray of the water casts a beautiful rainbow into the air as the sun’s rays illuminate each drop of water that flies through the sky.
As I gaze off to the south of me, I can see a secluded beach. The beach is only accessible from the ocean because it is tuck away in between two points that extend into the ocean. The beach is known as Seal Beach, and rightfully so because there are hundreds of seals that call that place home. I watch the seals flop along the white sandy beach going in and out of the water. When they come out of the water, their black coats are as shiny as a new car on the showroom floor. There are other seals that choose to relax in the sun and heir skin looks as dried out and cracked as the dessert floor. There are bigger seals that tend to be more aggressive as if they were the emperors of the empire. As other seals start to move closer the bigger seal will sound out a deep roar, almost like a warning shot from a gun, telling the other seals to stay back. Then there are the little seals that do not have a care in the world. They will waddle to the top of the rocks and slide into the ocean like a kid does on a giant slide at a water park.
I see the small seals interacting with one another in the ocean like children do when they are playing freeze tag chasing after each. Up the coastline to the north of me, there is a pier that extends out into the ocean about a quarter mile. As the sun starts the set, I can see the pier start to fill up with fisherman trying to catch there meal for the night. Tourists walk to the end of the pier, peering into the buckets of the fisherman to catch a glimpse if they have caught anything exciting while they await the magnificent show as the sun drops below the horizon.
I often see couples taking a stroll along the pier. They walk hand in hand slowly down the pier, talking about who knows what. I see the couples holding each other closely as the chilly air blowing across their necks as the sun falls and the winds start to pick up. As I look up above me, I can see the seagulls flying around like vultures preying upon the weak and wounded in hope that someone will drop a scrap of food or some old man will sit at the bench and toss out bread for them to feed upon. I love the sound of the birds as they chirp as if they were singing to one another.
As the wind picks up the seagulls will hover in the sky motionless like a helicopter over the scene of an accident. This place is so relaxing and almost puts me in a state of ecstasy as I hear the music of the birds and smell of the fresh ocean air as it fills my lungs like an asthma patient using their inhaler. I feel the power of the waves smashing against the rocks shaking the ground below me. This is the place that I come to calm my nerves after a long day of work, to ease my mind with everything going on in life, and is my sanctuary when I need place to get away for awhile.
