The designed system will create a new environment for the safety of traveller in the automobile industries. An intelligent car system will counter the problem and ensure the safety of the traveller sitting in the closed car cabin as well as provide a safe exit during adverse conditions.

Components of System:

The main components of this proposed system are PIR motion sensor, carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor, micro-controller, water sensor, smoke sensor, GSM modem, GPS, air blower, car buzzer and power windows.

In this system, there are three modules aligned together:

1. Carbon dioxide module
2. Water module and
3. Smoke module.

The above modules will detect the CO2 level and smoke in car, and also the water level around the car engine.

First of all, when the car is locked and the engine is off, then the PIR motion sensor will try to find a living being in the car. If it detects any, then it will activate the three modules that will work as mentioned below.

Carbon Dioxide Module:

1. There are two levels at which the micro controller will take necessary actions:

When the level of CO2 increases from 420ppm (0.042%) to 1000ppm (1%), then:

• The GSM will send an alert message to the car’s owner and will ask which action is to be performed, to open windows? or simply, to turn on the air blower? (which will initiate intake of fresh air)
• Microcontroller will wait for the owner’s response for 5 minutes. If action is specified then the mentioned action will be performed but if not, then the system will work automatically and will open the windows.
• If the window mechanism fails then it will turn the air blower on. If this mechanism also fails then the car’s buzzer will alert nearby people and will simultaneously send SMS to nearby hospital and police station.
• At every step the necessary message or an acknowledgement message will be send to the car owner.

When the CO2 level increasing from 1000ppm (1%) – 2000ppm (2%), then:

This level of CO2 shows that both the mechanisms have failed and so the car’s buzzer will turn on and will alert nearby people, simultaneously the GSM will send SMS to nearby hospital and police station.

B. Water Module:

1. The water sensor will detect water for 1-4 minutes.
2. If it gets a positive signal for the specified time period then it will open the windows and will unlock the car.
3. If the mentioned mechanism fails then it will send an alert message to the nearby hospital and police station as well as predefined contact numbers.

C. Smoke Module:

1. The smoke sensor will detect the smoke inside the car.
2. If smoke is detected, it will pull down the windows.

In this chapter, the working of modules is shown through pictorial form. It will guide from the process of development of PCB, through the testing of components, to the final implementation.

This system is:

1. Cost efficient.
2. Automated and sophisticated system
3. Minimal manual work needed.
4. Ensures safety of traveller
5. Provides a safe exit to the traveller during adverse situations.

The car must have:

1. Power locking system.
2. Power windows.
3. Air conditioner.

This system can be used in:

1. Lift.
2. Chemical industries.

Conclusion

The motto of this proposed work is to save the traveller from suffocation due to scarcity of oxygen in the closed car cabin. With the use of electronic devices, this intelligent system is being implemented. It will be low cost system that can be used in the smart cars for the mentioned reason. A small computer (micro-controller) will handle the decision making process and will open the connection for power supply to the power windows, air blower, buzzer and other sensors. This system helps the driver to know if there is anyone who is left in the car or a living being is suffering from dearth of oxygen. It will also check if the person or the pet, in the car cabin, is having a critical situation, according to which an alert message will be send to the nearby hospital, and turn on the car buzzer to inform the nearby people about something wrong is happening in the car.

Foreseeing this system, a sensor can be developed which will scan the pulse rate or will measure the respiration rate fast with ease. This will not only tell the driver about the person suffocating in the car but will also inform if someone is having panic attack or any difficulty which rises his/her/it’s respiration rates. Grace Wusk and Hampton Gabler proposed a system on car crash by detecting the respiratory rates and heart rates using seat sensor [6]. Using this method, the proposed methodology can be enhanced for anti-suffocation in smart car systems.
