In the 1800’s there were many new inventions that changed the way of living for people. Men and very few women saw opportunities for new and exciting inventions that have transformed the world we live in. From light bulbs to the mass production of shoes, the world birthed many new inventions. The United States was changed due to these new inventions. It took hard work, trial and error, and many failures for some of these things to be created. The grit and determination seen by all of these inventors is an inspiration to us all.
In 1879 Thomas Edison perfected the the light bulb.
Although many inventors before him had tried and even had success. He is given credit for creating the first commercially practical incandescent light bulb.Edison was able to achieve a bulb that would burn for 1200 hours by using a carbonized bamboo filament. This invention is one that resulted in changing the world. The company that Edison owned called Edison General Electric Company was where Edison marketed his bulb and it was also the home where many other electrical devices that helped the world were birthed.
The telephone was invented in 1876 by the inventor, Alexander Graham Bell.
Bell is most famous for this invention. Bell grew up with a hearing-impaired mother and wife and he also worked with hearing impaired students. He wanted to figure out a way to transmit a human’s voice along a wire and he did. He created a telephone company called the Bell Telephone Company.
The telephone company is now called AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph Company).
Another invention that is recognized as one of the most popular inventions of all time is the Colt Revolver. Samuel Colt’s idea of the Colt Revolver was birthed while working on a merchant ship. He watched the motion of the ship’s wheel and noticed the spokes each coming in direct line with a clutch. From this observation the idea of the revolver was born. Samuel Colt’s invention was the beginning of a industry that still continues today. Not only does the Colt Manufacturing Company continue to thrive, but it has also contributed to weapons used by the military and law enforcement for centuries. At the time of his death in 1862, Samuel Colt was the wealthiest U.S.inventor with an estimated worth of 15 million dollars.
In 1886 Josephine Cochran, one of the few women inventors of the 1800’s, created a hand operated dishwashing machine. The machine was designed to make washing dishes easy and efficient. She is quoted as saying, “ If nobody else is going to invent a dishwasher, I’ll do it myself.” After finding broken China dishes from being washed by hand she wanted to find a way to wash dishes easier. The machine was made with wires to hold the dishes, and hot water and soap sprayed the dishes. This invention was important to Josephine because she was in a financial mess due to debt left to her by her deceased husband. This machine was only used by restaurants and hotels until the 1950’s.
The typewriter has since been replaced by computer but what a world changer it was. Christopher Latham Sholes invented the first commercially successful typewriter in 1867. Although there had been many attempts at typing machines for years previous to his invention, his typewriter launched Remingtons production of the commercial product. Around the time of his invention the word typewriter was born. The invention of the typewriter did take a while to grab the attention of the public. For quite sometime people still felt that writing by hand was easier. By the late 1800’s, employees in specialized areas of correspondence and account keeping began to rely on typewriters. Typewrites can be seen today as decorations in homes.
Some inventions though quite small in size, have changed the way we are able to do multiple daily tasks in big ways. Walter Hunt was a farmer in Lowville, New York. He worked to try and design more efficient machinery for local mills. As he was twisting some wire trying to figure out how to pay a debt he owed, he created the safety pin. He was given the patent for the safety pin in 1849 but later sold it for four hundred dollars to the man he owed the money. Not only did he invent the safety pin which is used by Americans daily, he also invented the sewing machine. He invented the sewing machine in 1834. His sewing machine was the first ee-pointed needle sewing machine. Hunt never patented his invention because he feared it would cause unemployment. In 1846, Elias Howere-invented this sewing machine and it was patented by 1846.
The 1800’s was full of people competing to invent the next greatest thing. There was constant changes being made. Improvements were discovered quickly as new inventions were birthed. The inventions made the United States greater than it ever wa before. From better lighting, to communicating with each other from long distances. The people that made all these inventions are owed a lot of credit. They have changed the world in tremendous ways. Who knows what the world would be like without these items. You would have to work in mainly the dark, you could not communicate with others. These inventions are amazing and i am grateful for each one of them.
