The essay “Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp” written by Joy Williams is about the problem that we are not taking care of the environment or seeing the truth of it all as well as we should be. Because we are too blind and lazy to solve the problems with everything around us, such as the animals and the plants that keep us alive everything is just getting worse. We’ve made it our nature to take things that are available and use them until it’s gone.
We are using all of our resources thinking that we’ll always have access to it and it has caused a problem for the environment.
Environmentalists are trying to find ways to get more people involved in making the United States more environmentally friendly. Should they be doing this, is it even worth it to try? It should be but who knows if people will really listen. We need to start being more honest about the advertisement about nature and the condition it is in.
In the beginning she mentions that people get the sense of guilt when they look at a picture of nature, they feel pity not of amazement.
If people see that the environment is clean and not polluted in the picture then they will think it is not that bad and they won’t worry about it. On the other hand if they see the truths about the polluted environment then maybe people will become more considerate and start to worry about the safety for all living creatures and do something about it.
There are already many advertisements about going green out there today. That might not be enough to change people’s minds. I agree with Williams. She shines a new meaning and perspective of things.
We are using too many of things that are in so little quantity. “I don’t want to talk about me, of course, but it seems as though far too much attention has been lavished on you lately—that your greed and vanities and quest for self-fulfillment have been catered to far too much” (203 Williams). The United States is the most lavishing country. Only in the US being skinny means that you’re rich because you can afford the good trainers and the good food. While in other countries if you were big you had money and you were higher up.
We take things for granted. I’m not any different. We think that we won’t run of money, but look at the economy now. Where is all the money going? Where did it all go? Everyone wants to live to make money in some way or form and they try to find the simplest way to make the most money. I always thought that you had to work hard for your money, to earn your food, and the wonderful extras. I go to school to get my degree, but what if it’s just a waste of time and money if there is someone else who can manipulate the system?
My uncle has his bachelors in computer programing but he is stuck wrapping meat at Costco. How we treat this world that we LIVE on is terrible. We pollute the air with all this smoke, we cut down trees that give us air to breath down to make factories that make more smoke just to make more things faster and cheaper to meet the demands of greedy people. Farmers now can’t even eat their crops until it’s been processed. It is absolutely terrible that they can’t even feed themselves with the crops that they grow.
We need to become more aware of what is really going on. No more turning a blind eye, no more putting it for the next year because we are too busy and interested on which celebrity is marrying which. Solar panels, windmills and water turbines to make power, these are the things we need. We need to take care of the endangered species on our planet so we can have them for the next generation to see. Because this place is amazing I want my kids to see a cleaner and greener world with more animals and less smog.
