The following write up contains a self reflection on the subject of managing, stewardship, and leading in an organization. It a reflection on my pre subject reflection, mid subject reflection, post subject reflection. The write up evaluates by skills, knowledge and skills in the concept.
Before I started learning this subject, I had no clear understanding of the managing, stewardship and leading concept and it application. My definition for management has been combination of resources to attain output. This means that employees should work all time to produce predetermined output. Stewardship meant to me taking care of resources of an organization or place to ensure allocation is optimized. This entails protection of owners’ interests through oversight. My definition for leadership was provision of direction on what has to be done to achieve goals. I had no skill in managing, stewardship, and leadership.
As a student, I thought management, leadership, and stewardship skills were important to specific professions especially those in nonprofit sector. The skills were not important to people working for profit organizations because their objective is create wealth for owners. My second assumption was that leadership skills depend on individual personality and cannot be acquired. This is what differentiated leaders in the corporate world. I thought that people from certain background possessed leadership skills that were hard to normal people to acquire later in life. Third, I assumed that stewardship skill were not important to running a business. I did not think on the impact f responsibility of organizations to the environment that they operate in. Lastly, I assumed that people will work regardless of their situation and do not require attention to perform their designated tasks and responsibilities in the organization.
The following topics created tension or concern prior to the start of the managing, leading and stewardship concept are; facing unpredictable situation, moral responsibility, impact of management, stewardship and leadership to teams, organization and individual performance. These concepts involve making right decisions, motivation, creating rational purposes, and integrating communication to create relationships that determine the effectiveness of leaders. These concepts are important to creating competitive advantage of an organization making it essential to acquire the skills.
My expectations in this subject are to understand the concept of managing, stewardship, and leading through studying different management theories. I also expect to develop individual leadership skills to lead teams, individuals, and organization towards attaining certain objective. Lastly, I expect to increase by knowledge in stewardship to appreciate the need to engage in sustainable business activities.
During the introduction of the managing, leadership and stewardship subject, there was presentation of knowledge and skills to be learnt in the subject. This showed the significance of the concept and applicability in the real world and it benefit in organizational performances. By use of the real world examples, I was able appreciate the need to study and acquire knowledge and skills in leadership and stewardship. I was able to see that leadership exist everywhere around the environment that we operate in (Bordas, 2016). Every institution in world require leader to lead it from its current situation to the desired situation. Leaders lead individuals, teams and organization to a certain direction that is predetermined. Leadership skills are important to managing an organization towards implementation of strategy or goal (Bernstein, Buse and Bilimoria, 2016). This entails that leadership skills are required in different levels in organization to enhance effectiveness and efficiency in the organizational activities. Stewardship concept involves engagement in ethical decisions that lead to sustainability in organization. Stewardship concept involves an individual acting morally responsible to all stakeholders in the organization. It also involves minding about the environment. The concept of managing, stewardship, and leading played a vital role to changing by view on managing people towards attainment of specified goals. I was also able to learn leadership abilities and skills that a leaders should have. These abilities include emotional control, decision making, motivation, listening etc. There was emphasis on emotions control since leaders should deal with both their emotions and that of the people they are working with. I recognized that it hard for normal people to control their emotions and can overreact to situations. This implies that leaders have a role of ensuring normal people emotions are controlled too in order to function normally and meet targets. Leaders need to motivate employees to keep their morale level high in the workplace in order to maintain or improve productivity. Motivation is to be used by leaders to influence people towards a certain direction through reinforcement (Burke, 2017). Leaders also need to make right decisions when leading people to enhance progress and solve problems. People working together end in conflicts that require to be solved in order to restore harmony in the team, individuals, and the organization. This entails that leaders should take make right decision when settling conflict to maintain and improve relationships in the organization. In summary, I was able to define, differentiate, critic and describe the concept of managing, stewardship and leading while attending lectures.
During the learning of the concept, I was thinking about group meetings that I attend. I liked moderating the group when we are discussing an issue. I have little experience working in the corporate world and therefore, I visualized my thinking and behavior in the team that we use to discuss course work and assignments. I was to understand some behaviors that members portray in the group and what I can do to effectively handle the situation. I am also able to appreciate my role to creating focus and targets of what has to be done by individual member in order to complete the whole assignment and ensure everybody contributes. For instance, I was able to understand why members wanted to work on the last days has compared to working while there is time. Individuals get serious at work and deliver more when they are assigned targets and time is specified.
The learning of the managing, leading and stewardship concept also changed by attitude, perceptions and interpretation of the activities occurring in the corporate world. Business leaders are continuously involved in advocating for responsible carbon footprint reporting and strategies to reduce it emissions. Leaders in the corporate world are also advocating and financing projects that solve societal current problems, for instance observation of human rights. Leaders are keen to reducing organizations impact on environment to enhance sustainability of the business they operate (Caldwell, Hayes and Long, 2010). For instance, the CEO of Interface Carpets Ray Anderson has led a campaign towards sustainable journey of the company that was marked as Mission Zero (Interfaceglobal.com, 2017). The CEO has appeared in many avenues to encourage and challenge other businesses to practice stewardship to the activities they are involved in. I have been able to appreciate the impact of these activities to the organizations brand that lead to earning of public trust and respect.
From the subject managing, leading and stewardship, I have gained a lot of knowledge, skills, and change of attitude. I can now define, identify, and interpret the concepts of managing, leading, and stewardship. I can define leadership that involves influencing people in a team or organization towards a certain goal. I can also define stewardship that involves responsibility that organizations have to understanding and managing their impact on environment. Stewardship lead to sustainable practices that create public trust and respect. I am also able to compare, give examples, and recognize the application of the concept in the real world. This knowledge enables be to view the world of businesses differently and critically analyze issues. Secondly, I have gained several skills in leadership and stewardship will enable me to practice, perform, demonstrate, interact, and illustrate the concept when working with people. I have acquired skills in making decisions, creating targets, motivating people and planning and directing to achieve a specific goal. I can make decisions that are sustainable to the environment and influence people to work in a certain direction. Lastly, I have changed my attitude towards leadership and stewardship in the different levels. I can justify, recommend, and adopt sustainability practices in an organization to incorporate stewardship leadership (Milton, 2014).
The can know think of applying the knowledge and skills learnt in the subject to lead my discussion group before completing my studies and applying it in the corporate world. I will use them to ensure members work on assigned part earlier and feel motivated to complete within the shortest time possible.
My perceptions and interpretations after the subject have change and I have a new look at different activities that companies are involved in which are not their core activities. I have understood why organizations act responsibility and will continue to in achieving it objectives. I have been able to know the strategic benefit that sustainable activities accrue to the organization’s band. For instance, Microsoft has been supporting production and usage of renewable energy since 2012 to ensure it empowers people towards a sustainable world (Microsoft.com, 2017).
As a student, I have understood my moral responsibility towards the environment. I have also appreciated by role in leadership to enhancing stewardship in the society. I have a role in the society to advocate for equitable human right, environmental protection and conservation, clean air and water for consumption. I should therefore use by influence towards a sustainable society that will meet the current generation needs and not compromising future generations survival (Pearson and Marler, 2010). Therefore, my guiding principles will be fairness and responsible actions when relating to people and environment.
