Sophie’s world is also a story of education and mentorship. Education can be defined as the act of receiving and giving specific information. It can also be described as the act to acquired knowledge, or the act of developing our powers of reasoning and judgement. In the same way, mentorship is a period during which a person receives orientation from somebody either a friend, or family member. They provide people with the obligatory to push in the correct direction. Coming of age is the act of not being a child anymore.
That is the transition from childhood to adulthood. Education and mentorship are one of the most cited ideas in Sophie’s world and is also very important in our life today. Here are some important points of education in our life and our society. Also, the importance of mentors, which provides you with the opportunity to know your skills and potential. To begin, Sophie’s world contains have two personal characters who are being educated on a course called Philosophy.
These characters are Sophie Amundsen and Hilde Snag. These two girls will try to apply philosophy to their own lives. Philosophy was a course they took privately. This course did not just increase their creativity, but also their thinking process and imagination. As in our society, people use education to be mature and have self-control. Same thing between Sophie and Hilde who uses philosophy to be mature and have self-control. Education is also good for the coming of age, especially for people who never had their parents beside them, or their parents were all busy on their business or occupation.
Likewise, Sophie and Hilde both have the same problem with their parents, and they tried to find models or mentors to guide them in their path of maturity. In our society today, Philosophy is like a source of comfort when life is not easy and sometimes supports and educates us. Alberto isn’t just Sophie’s teacher”he’s also her friend. This suggests that the purpose of Sophie and Hilde’s education isn’t just to understand philosophy; the purpose is to learn how to interact with others. Education is also an interaction between people. Nobody can educate himself. So, we need to interact with others to be educated. As we have said in the beginning, education is the act of giving and receiving information. So, no one can educate himself. Everybody needs somebody to be educated. Moreover, in other to start a successfully journey, you required guidance from a confident mentor. The wide range of favorable characteristics and values that mentors possess are necessary to pass the door and have a successful journey because mentors can recognize weaknesses and allow you the opportunity to improve upon them; a process that eventually leads to reparation and self-knowledge. A true philosopher must never give up (Gaarder 255). Philosophy life has given evidenced of powers to Sophie and Hilde. Alberto as a mentor tell Sophie not to give up, but always try to find answers on each question that she encountered. Philosophical questions are many but most of them are difficult to answers because there is only one answer (Gaarder). The purpose of Sophie’s philosophy course was to teach Hilde how to live and cope with her emotions. Hilde attend her philosophy course by reading Sophie’s philosophy and that is how she was educated and from then she became matured. We don’t learn anything there. The difference between schoolteachers and philosophers is that school-teachers think they know a lot of stuff that they try to force down our throats. Philosophers try to figure things out together with the pupils (Gaarder 189). This is one of the differences that distinguish Philosophers from schoolteachers. Philosophers always like to answer deep question in life, whereas some schoolteachers take students like sausage, that is, the act of stuffing information in someone mind rather than explaining step by step for the student to figure out. In the same way, education helps us to deal with our challenges. Everyone should know the importance of Education. From Sophie’s world we see how education had an impact on Sophie’s and Hilde’s life. Education enables us and prepare us in every part of our life. With education it is difficult to be an ignorant because an educated person will know what is good and bad. Also, education brings good habits and knowledge about socials problems. A good example of some body educated is that person who first is a good citizen and successful in nearly everything he does. Education is the basic thing in life and education has not yet impact the world. Some nations today lack proper education. As human beings we should try to solve this problem by putting effort, donations or even fundraising. Even in US some corners of the country do not have proper education. Coming of age comes when educations has passed. So, if we don’t educate our self or our societies, it would be difficult for us to talk of coming of age. To plan our future, we will have to put an important emphasis on education. Without education we wouldn’t have the technology we have today. In Sophie’s world, Sophie and Hilde are not taking this philosophy course for sake but rather they are being trained to be philosophers in the future. Alberto goal was to produce knew generations of Philosophers. To conclude, education is very essential to us and even helps in the progress of a country. Without education it is impossible for somebody to be successful in life. Ignorance can be vanished through education. Also, mentors are very important because they encourage us and always try to figure out positive feelings that are kept in ourselves. Everybody needs a mentor in his life.
