“In this world, you either have an excuse or a story. I prefer to have a story” is the personal goal I have set for myself. This reinforces my belief in taking responsibility for the decisions of my life. Being the son of a scientist at DRDO, India, I have been fascinated about research and development since my early school days. I understand the importance of an accurate and precise instrument, no matter how small or big it is and also the worthlessness of the same in context of even a single human life.
I achieved All India 25th rank in CIPEL Science and Mathematics Olympiad during high school life.
I was awarded scholarship from my school for academic excellence and all round performance in co-curricular activities like quizzing, debating, singing et cetera from my 6th grade right up to 10th standard. I did a project on Analysis of various Indian Missiles in 8th Standard which gave me an insight into various propellant systems and thus got me interested into exploring the vast arenas of science and technology.
In my senior secondary school at DAV Chandrasekharpur, I participated in a State Level Chemistry Exhibition and won the second prize.
We had demonstrated manufacturing procedure of bio-diesel from used vegetable oil in a cost effective way. After passing out with 80% marks I chose Institute of Technical Education and Research, Bhubaneswar to pursue my undergraduate studies. Though I was adept in C++ programming in senior secondary level, I chose Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering as my branch of studies to gain technical prowess in one of the most budding fields of research and development.
I will, any day, rate practical skills far more important than theoretical know-how.
Hence, as a fresher I was an active member of the college Robotics club and the Society of Automotive Engineers. As a sophomore, I represented my university at TECHFEST 2010 (IIT Bombay) and was awarded certificate of ‘Engineering Excellence’ in the event ROBO-Wars where ours was the only wireless bot from amongst 64(sixty-four) selected colleges across the world, including BITS Dubai. We defeated IIT Delhi’s team on the way semi-finals. In the same year I was also selected in the college team for ABU Robocon-INDIA as a member of algorithm and program developing team.
We had an average finish but an excellent experience from being amongst most enthusiast robotics engineers of the nation. Our team is very well appreciated in Eastern India as it has gone on to win various robotics events at technical festivals of many universities including IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Bhubaneswar, VIT Vellore, KIIT Bhubaneswar and many others. I was selected for internship at Integrated Test Range, Balasore where I worked upon design and simulation of mathematical model of a DC motor in MATLAB. There I gained perspective about precision control of a normal DC motor.
In the following year I was appointed as the student coordinator of the Robotics Club of our university. The work involves managing club proceedings, conducting weekly seminars, facilitating issue of robotics components, managing the finance, conducting annual robotics competition at national level technical festival of the university etc. I continue to be the student coordinator of the ITER Robotics Club in my final year also. I am presently the planning team member of the national level annual techno-management fest of my university.
In 2011 summer, I got an opportunity to work under Shri P. Murli Krishna at Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Research, Bengaluru as an intern. We worked on developing a structure of quadruped and carried on simulations for various physical conditions. The work included integrating MD ADAMS quadruped model with three degrees of freedom along with SIMULINK. The structure of quadruped was successfully simulated. I continue to work upon the things learnt there and have, hence been working upon simulation of Humanoid with various degrees of freedom as a part of my final year project.
The final semester project in my undergraduate course is about engineering a humanoid which replicates its operator on real time using depth camera. We are using Microsoft Kinect as image acquisition tool as it produces RGB and IR images which provide us with depth image. Using this image, we are to control a virtual humanoid designed using SolidWorks and being simulated on ADAMS platform. After the simulation is successful, we intend to implement it on a self designed hardware model. Robotics remains prime area of interest for me.
It is an amalgamation of various fields of study in engineering and, in my belief; only a complete engineer can succeed in developing it to the level it was believed to have reaches decades ago. This calls for comprehensive research and I would want to pursue Robotics as a career and not just hobby. Besides, an academic program under the guidance of research oriented professors would help me identify the area of research in robotics that has maximum potential of growth in the years to follow. Down the line, I see myself as a researcher and an academician in a global research institute.
Being the coordinator of the biggest technical club of my college, I have appreciable amount of experience of conducting seminars and teaching subjects related to robotics to interested enthusiasts. I believe I would be able to do justice to myself only in a platform which provides me with ample opportunities of research. Hence I have decided to pursue my Masters degree in a research-focused environment. The Computer Science MSE in with Robotics/Human Computer Interaction as core research area appears to be the perfect platform for robotics enthusiasts like myself.
The Project Areas listed on the web page appear to be amalgamation of all possible fields to robotics, in which Associate Dr Gregory D Hager’s work interests me the most. Also, I have closely followed some of the research papers while working on human-robot interaction for my final year project and look forward to be a part of such a highly research oriented lab. I sincerely to hope see myself as a part of the JHU family from FALL 2012. Financial Assistantships/ funding are humbly requested.
