When working with Brad, there are some positive objectives which must be kept in mind. It is vital to help him to manage his distress and emotions or to regain control of his own behavior. Brad must be encouraged for verbal communication so that it becomes easy to understand his thoughts and feelings. Efforts must also be made to develop a collaborative relationship with Brad. It is also important to be calm and polite with Brad and listen carefully to his thoughts and emotions. He must also be given the time to process as what has been said to him. If necessary it might be essential to ask him repeatedly the same question to gather information and get a thorough idea of his mindset. Moreover, it must also be ensured that Brad is supported by his friends, family and the society so that it becomes easy for him to quit those habits. Motivational interviewing can also help Brad to address his issues so that it becomes easy for the social worker to help me get rid of the problem (Hall et al. 2015).
The two organizations which will Brad and the ATSI people in the social and cultural aspects are discussed below:
The Redfern Foundation: Redfern Foundation helps the people of ATSI community to build their skills and create a positive sustainable infrastructure. This will help to promote the social, employment and educational opportunities among the people of these communities. Brad can also get employed through this organization and this will help me to get rid of this bad habits. Brad and the other people of the ATSI community will get a platform to exchange their thoughts and emotions and be self-sufficient (dovetail.org.au 2017).
New South Wales Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organizations (COAPA): This organization fosters and supports economic, social and cultural well being of the ATSI people who are the residents of New South Wales. This organization will help Brad and the members of the ATSI community who are at the risk of being separated by their families and friends. Moreover, the organization will also provide counseling and support to the people to get rid of their suffering and distress (alsnswact.org.au 2017).
It is vital to understand the plight of the ATSI people in order to assist Brad’s feeling of being isolated. The people of the ATSI community were isolated from their family, community and nation. They were rendered homeless. But research indicated that these tribes emphasize on the interconnectedness between their families, communities and they showed concern about each other. They had no place to eat or sleep and were in intergenerational trauma.
The state had enforced them for separation and this in turn has affected the ability of the ATSI people to be balanced in their mental and emotional state (education.vic.gov.au 2017). Similar was the case with Brad. He remained isolated and developed a criminal mental state. Moreover, there was unconcealed drug and alcohol misuse among the people of the ATSI community. There was no proper guidance was for healing this behavior. Brad also faced the same situation. There was no one who could understand his feelings and emotions. He was not accepted by his friends and family and so he remained isolated. Thus, this will help to understand Brad’s feelings of being isolated (Barton et al. 2017).
The three ways which can help the ATSI people to identify their culture in the residential care are discussed below:
Wings can improve their current services for Brad. The techniques and the method which they applied were not proper. They did not provide a proper environment in which Brad can share his thoughts and feelings. There was no proper counseling and as because he was detached from these families and friends, he felt isolated and he found nobody with whom he could share his feelings. This led him to severe depression and distress. As a result of this, he became more furious and agitated and started engaging in certain activities. Later, he was put behind the bars. When he was released from the jail, he became more isolated and depressed. He again started those criminal activities. It can be said that Wings do not have a proper system of rehabilitation for people like Brad (Herrman et al. 2016).
There was no security and safety for the individuals. If Wings had provided them all these services, Brad would get no time to engage himself in all this activities. Moreover, Brad did not like the job which was allocated to him. He was put under constant pressure and thus this has increased his frustration and distress. It is also vital to understand the emotions and mindset of people like Brad. Provision must also be made in the residential care so that Brad could meet his friends and remain emotionally stable. They must be given the chance to improve themselves slowly and through a proper methodology. It becomes difficult for a person to suddenly adapt to a new environment and quit his bad habits. All these aspects must be taken for so as to develop a healthy environment in the residential care (humanrights.gov.au 2017).
Brad was under pressure and he was kept isolated from his family and friends. He was compelled to do various kinds of jobs which he did not like. There must be a provision so that people can get a chance to do the work of their own choice. The reason behind this is that if they are forced and compelled, they get frustrated and irritated and try to escape from the residential care. Moreover, as Brad is detached from their parents and families, he lacked emotional stability and started practicing unfair means. Wings must appoint a proper counselor with whom the people in the care like Brad can share their thoughts and emotions. Moreover, a homely atmosphere must be developed in the residential care.
Wings also forced Brad to give up his bad habits at once which is very difficult for an individual. They must also give Brad proper training on cultural security and safety. As detached from their families and they do not have a proper identity, they get agitated when people speak to them. Wings should not take such actions such like they did with Brad. They had put brad in jail so that he can rectify himself and stop all those criminal activities. But this was not successful. Brad again started the same actions when he was released from the jail. Thus, it can be said that the whole system of wings needs to be changed if they want people like Brad to be changed. They must try to keep their clients happy so that they rectify themselves (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov 2017).
There are certain things that wings need to change the nature and habits of their clients. They must not take strict steps as they did with Brad. Instead of putting Brad in jail, frequent counseling would be much more effective for him. Brad must be asked repetitively if he could not catch the questions at once. Moreover, they must not be put under pressure and compelled to do any type of task. They must be given the liberty to choose their task accordingly. Brad must also be told that drug use and alcohol will affect them and their families too. Wings must provide Brad such an atmosphere so that he feels that he is at home with his family. People like Brad must be given employment opportunity of their own choice (dcp.wa.gov.au 2017).
In case of severe patients like Brad, one single counselor must be appointed. In case a case, it becomes easy for Wings to get more attached with person like Brad. Moreover, Brad must be given the opportunity to engage in various social and cultural activities apart from engaging himself in rigorous work. This will allow to change his mindset and he will feel relaxed. Wings can also give behavioral therapy to Brad so that he need not go to jail. Research shows that prison sentences does not improve criminal behavior and instead of that, they multiply. Cognitive behavioral approach is important through which Brad can change his ideology and he will be encouraged to take the responsibility of his own behavior. This will motivate him and he will realize to some extent that he needs to improve (Winters et al. 2014).
Wings must develop the concept of participatory method through which the clients can show their talents can engage themselves in creative work in their free time. This will also help them to get rid of their work burden. There must also be mutual understanding between the clients and the residential care. Brad must be exposed to different environment which will help him to get rid of social and mental tensions. Brad must be given the opportunity to speak and participate in various activities which will help the residential care to understand his mentality.
The counsellers must be very friendly so that the clients can approach them very easily. The activities linked to their aboriginal events such as NAIDOC Week must be organized so that brad can share some of the cultural ties, language and personal connections with his people. The residential care must collect the information of these aboriginal identities and give them practical support. Effort must also be made by the residential care to share examples of good aboriginal residents so that it motivate clients like Brad. Wings must also make a provision for recreational activities such as singing, dancing which will help them to get an in-depth knowledge of their culture (gcyp.sa.gov.au 2017).
Culture has a great influence on the way people think and the way they deal with things. Culture is often misunderstood or misinterpreted as there people who are of various cultural background that one is unaware of. It is important to understand the background of a criminal mind in order to understand why he is behaving in an anti social way. Cultural security and safety are important for any person to make them feel at home and make them believe they are in a safe place. If there is no cultural safety a person is bound to think that he or she is being forced to do something. Whenever someone is forced upon something they tend to repel it. It is important to know the cultural background of Brad and then assign him a counselor of the similar background so that it becomes easy for them to understand his thoughts. Moreover, cultural support programs must be implemented so that the clients know more about their culture (Abuzar and Owen 2016).
It is a difficult task to divert or change a mindset of an adult. If a person has commenced his journey in the criminal world then it is very difficult to make that person realize the gravity of his state. Most of the time these people are aware of what they are doing is wrong but due to the socio-economic pressure, they are bound to choose this way of life. Hence, to improve the organizational outcome it is important to study individual case carefully and understand the point of concern and to progressively work for the better outcome of the inmates (Estabrooks et al. 2015).
