Across the globe, the aviation industry is growing at a rapid pace. Accordingly demand of the effective workforce is also increasing. In this regard, it is important to note that that risk factor is in the aviation industry is high especially, in the profession of a pilot. Beside of flying a flight effectively, a pilot also needs to think strategically as well as he needs to take instant decision in case of critical situations (Klein, 2008). Thus it is important for the pilots to improve their problem solving skills and decision making skills in order to be more efficient as he or she takes the responsibilities of hundred other lives. Therefore the report takes a closure look at the strategies and measures which might help the pilots in the improving decision making skills throughout their career. While discussing this, the whole course of the discussion repeatedly highlights the need of the improving the decision making for pilots and finally the paper concludes by summing up the whole discussion.
In order to discuss the ways to improve decision making skills for pilots, certain factors first needs to be highlighted based on which the pilots will be improving the decision making skills like intuition, leadership, situational analysis, confidence, self-discipline and so on.
Decisiveness: In order to make timely discussion, one of the most essential traits that the pilots must possess is the decisiveness. In the job of a pilot, crisis can occur anytime. Thus during the crisis situation, the pilots need to take instant as well as quick decision in order to avoid any unexpected accident (Endsley & Garland, 2000). However turbulence, resource constraints and other factors which add additional pressures on the job of pilots, makes it difficult for the pilots in making quick decisions. Emergency situations like bad weather, poor controlling of air and other factors which creates obstacles for a pilot while flying, demands pilots to be quick analyst of the situation and be consistent making decisions. Thus it can be said that the practical experience itself improves the decision making skills. The more a pilot experiences emergency situations the more his skill of decision making is improved.
Confidence: Another most required trait of a pilot is the confidence. There are situations like diversion, forced landing, winter operations and so on. This emergency situation highly demands the pilots to be confident. As the entire responsibility remains on the pilots, it is important for the pilots to be extremely confident while making decisions (Flin et al., 2003). Apart from that during tight schedules, they get very little time which create additional stress on the plots, yet they need to handle tough situations confidently. Thus in order to improve confidence, they must be able to analyze situations in a right manner so that they will be sure about the end result of the situations. Again it needs to mention that confidence comes with expertise and knowledge. Therefore a pilot must possess more than adequate knowledge about the technology, his job role and other aspects related to the entire aviation sector.
Self-discipline: It has been observed that most of the successful pilots are disciplined. Not only the instances, theories also are of the suggestion that the self-discipline enables one to take right decision at right time (Tsaur, Chang, & Yen, 2002). A pilot’s job is considered as no less important than a job of a doctor, so it is required that the pilot follows certain disciplines in terms of morale. In most of the cases, it has been found that self-disciplined pilots can take timely right decisions. Apart from following certain principles in personal front, the pilots need to follow all the norms of his profession. Abiding by the rules and regulations, it minimizes the chances of arising difficult situations. However, during emergency situations, in order to save the lives of people sometimes the pilots need to break the rules and needless to mention that such this are overlooked on a large picture. Even in such cases, the pilots need to aware of when to break the rules.
Self-criticism:One of the most useful ways to improve decision-making ability will be the self-criticism. By evaluating the actions taken by them can enable them to understand whether the decision was right or there is a scope of improvement keeping the future prospect in mind (Schriver et al., 2008).

Realistic: In order to take the more timely decisions, pilots must possess a realistic approach. To be more specific, during emergency or any other situations, pilots need to take decisions that have relevance with the real situations not superficial. In order to take realistic decisions, pilots must have the required knowledge of the aviation industry, technological factors and system and most importantly the duties and responsibilities of his job (Endsley & Garland, 2000). A pilot’s job is considered as no lesser important than the job of a doctor, so it is required that the pilot follows approaches as they encounter new experiences in everyday work. Challenges are there which most of the pilots regarding their duties as well as regarding other aspects. One of the issues that aviation sector these days face is frequent pilot strike. Often it is seen that most of the demands which the pilots brings have no relevance with the real scenario. Therefore it is of suggestion that instead of going for strike, pilots must possess the approach of collaboration and cooperation.
