Analyze the efforts taken by Singapore to maintain sustainable environment in their economy.
Sustainability is one of the growing concerns of business and economy. This is due to rising globalization and industrialization. This increases the rate of pollution in the environment that affects the people living in it. Thus, many economies have taken various kinds of steps to fight the negative impact of globalization by taking up various sustainability steps in thematic areas of the economy. Singapore is also facing environmental impact due to rising industrialization in its economy. Thus, it started its sustainability efforts to save the environment form the negative effects starts from 1960s. The sustainability effort of the economy has focused in various thematic grounds such as a livable and endearing home, a vibrant and sustainable city, an active ad gracious community and others (Ioannou & Serafeim, 2017). The paper will focus on the vibrant and sustainable city as the thematic approach of sustainability in Singapore. It further discusses about the approaches used to support sustainability and offer a critical analysis of CRC sustainable approach.
While carrying out the sustainable city plans the country focused at improving various aspects to reduce the negative impact of globalization. Thus with exciting technologies at various grounds they were able to come up with a green economy. Various strategies were taken into consideration in relation to bringing out sustainable city (Yong, 2015). The two strategies that were taken to meet the objective of the theme are saving energy and water and coming up with greener vehicles. Both the strategies aim at improving the condition of the city by reducing polluting factors (Greenfuture, 2014). For saving water the city has started enhancing their water sewer network and started digging the underground sewerage system. PUB is been involved itself in developing a smart water grid to help improving the quality of water. There were also efforts made to detect whether there is any leakage in the pipelines so that they can improve it for smooth water supply. On the other hand efforts were taken on saving the energy by initiating the people to increase usage of solar energy. For procuring the solar energy the city has identified HDB as the agency (Greenfuture, 2014). The agency is government based and will thus reduce the cost of fueling solar energy. SolarNova has been bee adopted as the new technology and is believed to create new opportunities. Another strategy is to build a greener economy in which it decided to introduce greener vehicles. This will help reduce the rate of pollution that emits from the other forms of vehicles.
The main thematic areas that the strategy focuses are energy, water and quality of the economy. Within each thematic area as well the economy focuses on various grounds. While focusing on water resources the economy focuses on the improving the quality of water and increasing the supply of water. Pipelines were amended to help them with free flow of supply of water. This made them adopt the Smart Water Grid to help them build the pressure for water. This will also help them to detect the leaks in the pipelines that can be amended for reducing wastage of water (Greenfuture, 2014). The Water Efficiency Find is a program under PUB that helps the user in the domestic region to improve water quality and help in recycling of water. On the other hand, the economy has also focused at energy saving initiatives in which it focuses on increasing the usage of solar energy and reduce using other non-renewable sources of energy.
Greener vehicle is yet another most important theme that the company chose for building a sustainable city. Thus to make it a truly sustainable city it is necessary that the people of the city uses green or eco-friendly vehicles to move from one end to the other. This is because transport emits pollutants in the environment that reduces the water level; add to the ground level ozone and other harmful effects (Greenfuture, 2014). Thus, it is required that they fuel-efficient alternatives for the public that they can use in their everyday transport. To keep a check on the initiative NEA decided to introduce better standards for the composition of petrol and diesel fuel.
To focus on the thematic areas that the economy has chosen in order to reduce the environmental problem in the city, there were various approaches that have been taken. First approach that was taken to save water for the future generation is to save it from getting wasted. This was done to reduce the issues that are caused due to leakage of pipeline. Thus they planned to amend the pipeline so that the leakage is reduced and there is no wastage of water. Another approach in this ground incorporates Smart Water Grid which will help in easy supply of water. This will prove to be beneficial for the city to increase the efficiency of supply and quality of water in the city (nea, 2017). Various approaches have also been taken in the ground of conserving energy. To carry forward with the work of saving energy the economy has chosen to replace solar energy in place of other sources of non-renewable energy. The approaches that are taken to increase the use of solar energy were done through Solar Nova Programme (Greenfuture, 2014). The program was undertaken to employee solar energy in various aspects of the city. Moreover, the Solar Nova Programme has allowed various opportunities for the companies in Singapore to help them grow with solar energy capabilities.
There were various approaches that were taken for meeting another thematic ground that is creating green vehicles for the city. This was done to offer clean and greener vehicles to the people of Singapore. For the purpose the city will hire pilot cleaner technologies by taking sponsorship from Volvo, SBS Transit and other (nea 2017). This was done to create an eco friendly public transport.
It has been recently analyzed that the city has been successfully achieving the first thematic area of conserving energy. This was seen that the city has extended its approaches of keeping minimum energy performance standard to the motors of the city. This was done because in ECA report 2015 it was seen that the energy consumption of the motor industry is 80 percent of the total electric consumption (nea, 2017). Thus, in 2016 it was seen that NEA introduced the acceptance of MEPS for motors to reduce the consumption of energy. After the introduction of MEPS, NEA kept a regular check on the efficiency of energy standard in the city. Moreover, it has also encouraged companies to take up new facilities in their organization in order to reduce the consumption of energy. However, there were no standards set in the NEA report on bringing up new type of renewable resources (nea, 2017). The blueprint report 2015 did mention that the city will take up initiatives for solar energy consumptions; however, no initiative was taken to increase the scope of solar energy and its usage in the city (Greenfuture, 2014).
There were certain improvements made on the theme of introducing green vehicles. The main aim of this approach was to reduce the emission of gases in the city. In order to do so the city adopted Euro VI emission standards, this focuses on the emission of NOx in the environment. This was an effort by NEA to move forward with their aim to give a cleaner city to live (Tan, et al, 2015). Moreover, there were also introduction of electric car in the city for the reduction of harmful gases. This was an initiative of the Go Green strategy of the city proposed by the NEA. However, the strategy was not supported by the consumers as they did not buy the electric car (Sen, 2016). There are other initiatives taken on making electric car for the public and maintain the sustainable city theme for Singapore.
There are some recommendations that need to be given to help the city overcome the areas of failure. The first recommendation that the city needs is to increase the generation and usage of solar energy. There should be more initiative taken to create plants in the city so that solar energy can be generated and distributed to the maximum threat area. Another initiative that the city needs to take is to influence people to adopt electric cars in the city. This can be done by carrying out a proper and efficient marketing strategy such as low pricing, better speed and other preferences that people like.
Conclusion
From the above analysis it can be deduced that Singapore has been successfully implementing sustainability in various thematic areas such as building a sustainable city and environment. For the purpose they have taken initiatives like to introduce better sources of energy and using Go Green technology. Even though they have been successful in taking steps to reduce the usage of energy and emission of harmful gases, yet they did not introduce new ideas to deal with the problem. There was no initiative taken for introducing solar energy in the city and failure to encourage people to buy electric car
