Leadership has all along been the driving force at every level of the development of civilization, and on the other side, it has caused destruction too. Fortunately its good deeds have outperformed its bad ones and so the humans are still alive and kicking, and pursuing the next level of development. In other words, it is the mightier presence of responsible leadership that keeps us going.

This is the point of hope for the humans today, as they are threatened by the global climate change, and to win this huge battle, they will have to bank on the leadership wisdom more than ever, because it is that wisdom which would enact principles of sustainability in organizational practices, processes and policies.

The degenerative state of climate, which is actually a compounded backlash of earth’s continuous onslaught at the hands of humans, has now made sustainability a crucial issue for organizations, and accordingly their leaders are now assigned with a challenging task of protecting, sustaining, and enhancing the human and natural resources, besides meeting the needs of the organization and its stakeholders.

Little did the researchers like Bolman and Deal (2003) know that even their observation that “Organizations function like complex, constantly changing, and organic pinball machines“, would pale before the gravity of the situations that would match Professor Robert Socolow’s words, “humankind is running an uncontrolled experiment on the world. Our current course is bringing climate change upon ourselves faster than we can learn how sever the changes will be” (Socolow, 2005)

This is a dangerous situation and the sustenance of civilization now solely depends on the wisdom and ability of a newer kind of leadership, which is called as sustainability leadership.

This essay therefore, explores the nuances of leadership under the context of sustainability, which has become a crucial issue for organizations. What is sustainability? Sustainability can be defined in many ways as it covers the embedded aspects of the major environmental, social and economic challenges before the civilization. The concept of sustainability involves human action to strengthen the above areas and make earth a healthy place to live on.

Sustainability primarily means becoming aware of our actions that create negative impact on the balance of the earth. Accordingly, sustainable business sets its task of creating outcomes that would work in favour of the earth. From the perspective of sustainability, natural resources of this earth and human beings are considered as prime capitals that are to be developed. To achieve such an outcome, the world needs sustainability leadership, because sustainability challenge covers every layer of human existence and actions, and in many cases they are invisible. The different nature of task sets commands newer skill sets, and sustainability leadership is no exception, and thus researchers have identified its appropriate principles and the required abilities of the leaders to master the complex of the prerequisites of this kind of leadership. According to Dan Goleman and his colleagues the “resonant” leaders should be given more importance here, because of their emotional intelligence and their ability to form “an emotional bond that helps them stay focused even amid profound change and uncertainty” (Goleman et al. , 2002, p. 21).
