A Report on Technology in Crime Fighting Table of Contents Cover Page1 Table of Contents2 Abstract3 Research4-7 Conclusion8 References9 Abstract This report explores the different advancement in technology as it relates to fighting crime. Much technological advancement has been available to fight crime. The research highlighted not all but the major use of technology in crime fighting. The Global Position System is widely used by law enforcements. DNA technology, video surveillance all of these can be found as key technology used by many crime fighting bodies.
The use of high tech equipments are far more frequently used as technology improve throughout the years, and as such so does innovative and more technical means of fighting crimes are available. Keywords: DNA, GPS, surveillance Technology in Crime Fighting The problem of crime is one that many countries have to deal with. The use of advance technologies available to law enforcement and security agency available to them, has made it possible to catch more criminals than before.
The use of biological and micro technology allow for a wider variety of things used.
DNA collection and analysis gives the criminal justice field a powerful tool for convicting the guilty and exonerating the innocent as stated by (About Forensic DNA).
It allows crime scene investigators to carefully collect DNA specimens to help to put together the missing pieces of the puzzle. “Biological evidence from crime scenes is collected and stored properly, forensically valuable DNA can be found on evidence that may be decades old” (About Forensic DNA). People can be identified by unique DNA identifiers in their genetic makeup that can be sampled from hair, body fluids or skin.
As a result, when it became available, DNA analysis using genetic identification technology and related databases was quickly sought after by law enforcement. With further development, it has become famous for solving old cases thought unsolvable. DNA analysis has also proven some people innocent who were put in jail by mistake. (tlutzenberger, 2010). DNA data has lead to many rape related cases being resolved as in the case “DNA frees rape accused, spent four years in jail” (Williams, 2006).
The use of Global Position System to track potential criminals is used widely, law enforcements are able to stay at a static location and retrieve information about a suspect. This is done by either a GPS device attached to a vehicle or from a cell phone. GPS have been used as bait in cars and packaging. Banks are now using GPS technology to fight against bank robbers, robberies that took months to investigate now happen in days. (Bolduan, 2008) Law enforcement has increasingly begun to rely on GPS tracking to help them in many of their regular duties.
One common application of the technology places a transmitter in an ankle bracelet that most be worn by paroled offenders. (Bartlet, 2010). Companies such as Hidden Technology and SHIELDS Crime and Technology Consultants compete to provide these specialized equipments. Video surveillance captures images at stoplights and help capture criminals involved in robberies. Videos from ATM and banks have facial recognition software used to identify criminals. (Lounello) explains that Visionics Corporation is an example of a company in the identification technology industry.
They claim that their products, ranging from facial recognition to live scanning of fingerprints, are ideal for law enforcement to help increase security and surveillance and reduce identity fraud. Surveillance by covert video is used by police officers in squad cars to record license plates of vehicle stopped. License plate reader (LPR) technology uses optical character recognition (OCR) to record images. This technology allows law enforcement agents to survey and track cars and trucks on the road. Its use go beyond tracking speeders; it also helps monitor activities in high car-theft areas and along drug trafficking routes.
Commercial stores are faced with a myriad of issues when it comes to crime. Some examples include the more common shoplifting done by an increasing number of shoppers, the thievery done by career criminals and organized groups, and the in-house robbery done by the company’s employees themselves. To avoid this, a video surveillance system can be easily installed at strategic places around the store, warehouse and business. “When criminal activity is spotted, a camera video surveillance can easily identify and track the face of the person perpetrating the crime source”. Biz, 2010) Surveillance used to involve following by car, watching from a distance, and photographing activities. Technological surveillance by police now involves GPS tracking, digital phone recording and location tracking by signal, satellite tracking and photography, and public camera installation for face recognition and incident recording. Gunshot spotting has begun to make itself known in urban law enforcement. Gunshots are hard to associate with a crime because officers first need to know the specific location where a gun was fired.
Law enforcement agencies use systems based on earthquake measuring technology that catch sound waves caused specifically by gunshot and can pinpoint their location almost exactly. The technology can also locate where gunfire is statistically most likely to occur, allowing police to pre-stage a presence and catch criminals in the act. This is done by “recognized that sound waves travelling through the air away from a gunshot are basically similar to the sound (seismic) waves travelling through the ground away from an earthquake” (http://www. usgs. gov).
While forensics experts are already very skilled at analyzing the characteristics of bullets and shell casings that were used at the scene of a crime, new technology allows a laser engraving to be conducted on both the projectile of a bullet and the inside of the shell casing that can later be scanned and traced back to the store and the specific ammo box that it originally came from. While this won’t prove a suspect did the shooting in an investigation, it will allow for detectives to have a starting point. In the past, they may have been working without solid leads. Bullet Identification Technology) Intelligence tools such as predictive analysis are used by detectives to determine areas that are most like to have a murder versus rape and other crimes. They use factors such as weather and population density. The entire department has easy access to predictive crime analysis, data-mining to correlate past and present data. Intelligence software such as I2 analysis, I2’s technology empowers government agencies and private sector businesses to investigate, predict, disrupt and defeat the world’s most sophisticated criminal and terrorist activities. We enable our users to be more effective by providing not just information, but the insights to answer critical questions and take action” (I2 Intelligence Platform). The i2 software is used to analyse patterns and links that persons may have with each other. This produce a clearer picture to detectives that want to have a visual prospective on trends. Conclusion These are all great tools to fighting crime, GPS, DNA, Video Surveillance, but the most important tool of all for fighting crime is the careful application of these tools.
Law enforcements and security personals tend to really on the technology around them, which may be a disadvantage if this is taken away. There are a lot more technologies that are available to help fight crime; even the simple GOOGLE search engine is placed as a tool to be used. It’s not just the technology available to fight crime but the application of the technology. References About Forensic DNA. (n. d. ).
