The art of understanding human behavior fascinated me when I began reading a thrilling book called “The social Animals” authored by David Brooks. The book opened my eyes to a myriad of fresh insights about the realm of emotions, human intuitions, genetic predispositions, personality traits and social norms. I began to sense, there was so much about human behavior that we often ignore in today’s world. For instance; when a baby cries, we often think that he/she needs food, while overlooking other possibilities.
While in high school, I observed a number of classroom behavior problems. I noticed students showing misbehavior by fighting each other, disrupting the classroom atmosphere by talking to others and leaving classroom during lectures. I wondered why teachers couldn’t do anything about it.
The importance of meeting student’s psychological needs is undeniable. My trip to Turkey as a YSEL alumnus gave me an opportunity to participate in youth solidarity English Language Program where I not only received training on leadership, teambuilding and cultural diversity, but also learned how teachers can keep students motivated by taking care of their psychological needs.
For instance, when I participated in the YSEL program, I saw how a teacher’s positive language affected the overall performance of the students. On my return, I began teaching English at various English Language centers for almost two years. During this time, I enjoyed helping students with learning English, but I realized how majoring in psychology will improve the quality of my teaching.
I as an English teacher feel how pivotal it is to motivate and engage students in classroom by understanding their emotional and social needs.
To better comprehend how to provide an atmosphere where student’s psychological needs are met, I found Kabul Educational Advising Center, where students seek academic advice. I observed a couple of Fulbright Alumni who were teaching English Language classes, such as TOEFL and GRE. I noticed how creative they were in their approach towards students. Later on, my interest in KEAC urged me to work as a teacher assistant for GRE and TOEFL classes. After a year, I started teaching English at LLC Women Garden for a couple of weeks where I also conducted information sessions on subjects related to psychology such as emotional intelligence, conflict resolution and academic behavior.
My interest in psychology as well as my background serve as a manifesto to what I would like to study in future. I would like to purse my higher education in psychology at the American University of Central Asia for a number of reasons. First, the American University of Central Asia is known for its quality education. Being a student at AUCA will provide me the opportunity to observe teacher’s behavior toward students, learn useful methods to inspire and motivate students and discover how to fulfill student’s psychological needs. The AUCA will also serve as platform where I can expand my social network by meeting new people from other countries while sharing my culture with them. At the same time, AUCA instills in students the value of being selfless and humble. This is evident in many AUCA alumni who have returned home.
On my return to Afghanistan, my plan is to teach English at a high level while holding training sessions for teachers on psychology. I would specifically train school teachers on student’s emotional and social needs. This will hopefully lead teachers toward better understanding of student’s needs so that they can use certain methods that encourage positive behavior in students. My long term goal though is pursuing my master’s degree in Educational psychology through the Fulbright program.
