We live in a world where the future can potentially mean that we have to rethink how we work, rest and play. Here we will discuss in what way the autonomous robots development will change human lives positively as well as negatively in upcoming time. At present in the societal perspectives the field of autonomous robotics is raising dispute and debate within our society. As a result, the natural and obvious effect of robotic invention at our future is that the robotic development will have an inevitable impact on our daily lives. Besides, the main issue lies in unfolding the question that whether the robotic impact will profit our society or become a detriment for all of us (Forschungs-Gemeinschaft, 2011).
In this way, this essay will inspect the severable constructive outcomes that will occur with the future robotic development. Additionally, some critical favourable results that are going to be examined include; refining the production, safety, quality of production procedures and decreasing wages as well as expenses comparative to the human employees. At the same time the discussion will also explore the key disadvantages resulted by the robotics development those will materially affect our present as well as future society (Clickatell, 2017). For example these probable disadvantages may include increased unemployment, job loss, dehumanisation and increased risk of wars on casual issues (Smith & Anderson, 2014).
Autonomous robots definitely have an influential impact on our society which includes many benefits with disadvantages. For an example medical operations and processes will have an extraordinary positive impact of autonomous robots. Hence present and future of robotics emphasizing on advancement of these robots that can improve multiple aspects of the healthcare industry comprising; improving affordability, accessibility, personalisation and provided services quality. Additionally, the involvement of autonomous robots in surgical processes will vastly improve efficiency as well as results of medical field (Barbash & Glied, 2010).
Moreover, raising this question, will robots change our lives? Will be worthless because they have already started changing our lives in many ways and fields. The interesting fact is that robots are doing many amazing things for us like recording our videos, cooking our food, playing music, and even running our cars. We just cannot observe this fact because these robots are not having a face with whom we can interact and they are just machines that can be trusted to do things for our society. In other words, autonomous robot is an automatic motorised tool that can help in each and every activity and imagination of us (University of Surrey, 2016). Additionally, it is still a challenge to get the robots out of negative fiction and imaginations and introduce them into entertaining reality positively.
Moreover, there are a lot of things that are possibly done by robots and it will change our globe’s life in the future in a positive direction. For an example robots can entertain people, can help in working with the dangerous sites, and they can elderly care. Besides, robots will also have telepresence in areas such as shopping, assistance and tourism (Harris, 2018). Life will be beautiful and drastically easier for the whole human society when a robot will shop vegetables, clothes and all necessities for you anytime from anywhere while you will be sitting comfortably at your home. In future where the budget, cost and inconvenience of travelling will be high then autonomous robots can help us in ensuring that the resort, hotel or place is up to its standard for visiting during a vacation or program. Moreover, we know that human brain is enormously wide and efficient but in the end they can feel and get hurt easily, hence human made robots for doing difficult tasks in an easy way. In this context, disaster is inevitable and taking help at a disaster site from autonomous robots will be an innovative utilization of these robots in upcoming time. Robots will take you to the whole world, everywhere and that too at the speed of imagination (Dickson, 2017).
Robots is the invention of artificial intelligence (referred as AI), and it is still on its way to renovate the whole universe. If it will work then autonomous robots will not just change people’s lives in the prospect, in fact they will expand their lives in all good ways. In 1998, a fuzzy robot named Furby became must-have toy of the season. Afterwards in 2007, Taz robot faced off against Thunderpudgy the illegal nuclear attempt. Later then 2007, AI came with the innovative inventions like robot assisted medical surgery, swallowing robot, military robots, swarm robotics and polymorphic robots (Heyer, 2010).
Hence, as the robotics field advances, intelligent machines will become a part of our improved universe. The thoughts collected related to the use of robot technology are the product of common culture, personal wants, beliefs and human expectations. We may not aware of what will exactly happen in next 10, 30 or 50 years, still we know what we wish to happen, from what we distress, and what enthuses us. In the next 10 years from now, robots will be able to perform many tasks that needs human skill set presently, some of them will be able to communicate with human world, some will drive cars, some robots will help doctors, some of them will work in the companies replacing human beings and some of them will grasp human language (Watson, 2016).
Furthermore, we can assess the impact of development of autonomous robots on our future lives through studying following scenarios:
We can estimate that autonomous robots will lead to a delighted future with the help of technology entrepreneurs, media outlets, and futurists. At the same time, there are a number of politicians, intellectuals and journalists portraying bad picture of our automated future. Thus, one can be either in favour of AI-invented automation and things those are attached with it, or oppose it (Robotics business review, 2012).
Assessing scenario 1 is depicting that we should accept that robot automation is reliant on data that is not available in the requisite quantity or quality. Thus, if we imply balanced automation in technological limits then human labour would continue superior as well as cheaper in the majority of occupations. Furthermore, risk of harm to humanity and dehumanization will be reduced to a large extent but societal development will be too slow as comparative to fully automated world. As a result, humanity will be able to automate specific tasks, provided with the decision of not automating others, and hence in some cases humans will not be able to automate tasks at all because of the technological restrictions put by them only. Finally, keeping humanity in mind, balanced automation will grow slower but it will not be as troublesome as presently predicted (Weber, 2018).
Assessing scenario 2 is depicting that humans could have overwhelmed the technological restrictions from scenario 1. Ideally in this scenario, we would be capable to automate most of the tasks fully; still Cultural Revolution would not be as quick as technological transformation. Additionally, external inhibitors can force our system to lower automation intensity. Therefore, we would be needed to carefully choose in which area we want to continue using automation technology and unite it with earlier applied innovative technology and old-fashioned knowledge (Clickatell, 2017).
Assessing scenario 3 is depicting that because of the combining artificial intelligence, biology, healthcare with the other areas, science might acquire skilled understanding of composite systems like human behaviour, health, and global environment (Arkin, 2009). This info can be used not only in automating human labour, but also for developing an alternate political, economic and social system, that is well-suited with the future status (Broadbent et al., 2009).
While benefiting from robotics automation and AI technologies, humanity would be ready to admit the internal risk through a general purpose AI. Besides, during this scenario we will have to accept that human perception is not capable to comprehend the results produced by all intelligent systems (Benitti, 2012).
During this scenario, to seal the void of job loss, people would focus on human inter-connections and would build a knowledge-based economy, in which cooking, nursing home care, handcrafting and many other human experiences will be prized the most. Thus, the bridge gaps between peoples resistant to the innovative AI change and the peoples having technologically-mind could be fulfil with monetary support funded through an automation tax, and versatile training programs (Kemp, 2016).
Assessing scenario 4 is depicting that for fast full automation, world economy would have to swiftly rethink human workforce, redefine the whole worth system and most importantly redesign the philosophies we presently believe to (Reynolds & Day, 2018). In case of fully-automated globe, corporate trusts those will have built the automated systems, would ultimately amassed power as well as money, because the world will not be having adequate human jobs (Population Matters, 2018).
As we know that presently automatic sensors and actuators, with computation advances, memory storage and communication ability, are building each product smarter. Although these results will be beneficial for the huge global population, as they are bringing prosperity, knowledge, strong connections and customer choice for the billions yet they will be thought-provoking for the millions of human beings doing their jobs and they will not exist in around a decade (Ravid & Liu, 2016).
Along with the positive developments of autonomous robots, there are many negative developments also which will be hindering human thoughts. While robotics automation will provide human with the efficient tools to extract the natural resources and the planet, at the same time they will leave least natural resources for the future generations. Use of AI technologies and autonomous robots will enable extraction of fossil fuels as much as possible and it will lead to an enhanced ecological degradation. Robotics automation will improve agricultural advancements with the help of efficient farming but at the same time the success will cause a huge reduction in biodiversity. Creating artificial islands, deeper mountain tunnels would be possible with the help of AI automation techniques which will increase the risk of more destructive natural disasters like land sliding, flooding and earthquakes (Tilden, 2011).
Moreover, apart from the above aspects of societal impacts of autonomous robots there are more challenges to our humanity in many ways. Due to replacement of humans with the autonomous robots in social as well as cultural jobs, an induced sense of alienation could cause depression in human beings. As we know that apart from replacing the humans, robots are having the capability to track the human’s movements, which can create dehumanisation in the workplace. The dehumanisation within the workplace can also create physical as well as mental problems in our society. Additionally, robotics in future would reduce the livelihoods of many human beings and communities. Besides, inequalities would generate amid developed and developing nations because many countries can afford to utilize robots and others cannot. Work done by robots is faster and more accurate than humans, hence it would create a vast difference between global countries (World Economic Forum, 2018).
Ethical issues in the robotic world are also huge challenges of the automated future. As we know that use of advanced robots has already created many morality debates because robots cannot make moral judgements and this can cause critical problems. Using autonomous robots in the warfare is also an ethical issue as the existence of lethal robots is creating a safety threat when they fall into the destructive hands. Besides, use of drones in warfare makes it easier to kill peoples, which is an unethical practice. Moreover, we know that human life is more valuable than a robot life. Yet, when future society will replace humanity with the robotics to get enhanced efficiency and productivity then an ethical dilemma will appear with the question that if robots are more valuable then why their life is less precious than humans’ (Forschungs-Gemeinschaft, 2011).
Therefore, autonomous robots are having their good side with a bad one, while not used with patent system, limitations, and technological-restrictions. While they are the most needed thing of the future, still they are the most dangerous threat to the humanity if not used properly. For an example, robots can kill huge peoples in warfare, at the same time they may assist elderly human in their residents, which would allow older people to live independently for a longer time. Thus, elderly people will be very mush happy to have the autonomous robots for carrying out daily life personal as well as impersonal tasks (Smith & Anderson, 2014).
In this way, humans and innovative technology can go hand in hand if human can use their combination effectively. Like the innovation of fire, has influenced the history of mankind intensely. Because not only it has allowed humans to control over the living environment, but it also worked as a catalyst in the humanity development. Besides, inventions like eyeglasses and the printing press had a huge impact on humanity. Additionally, Fossil fuels use, electric power, internet, computer and various other robotics have developed efficiency as well as productivity over the previous eras. Therefore, more inventions must be created when thinking about the prospect. Newly invented AI technologies offer considerable merits, but it also has the capability to impact negatively. Moreover, population rise will cause crises which will ultimately force humanity to develop new technologies which could harm our society as well as the environment (Weber, 2018).
In Conclusion, use of autonomous robotics will benefit the whole society in future, but also it will increase unemployment among humans at workplace. However, technology could also be utilized to help deteriorating populations’ efficiency through creating a sustainable future society. At the same time, robotics could fulfil the gaps at the workforce as well as assist whenever necessary, and scientific research by the humans could concentrate on sustainable improvements.
Moreover, none of the above scenarios are engraved in stones, means that we the human being can do anything with these AI invented robotics inventions. On the other hand, we the human being should not relax and predict that humankinds will easily deal with all upcoming changes, because we have experienced it already in our past.
Likewise, we should not quarrel or try to trump over each other or promise for a perfect future. Though ensuing with practicality might not be the foremost exciting task to do, still we must try this because this practice will ensure that we are well prepared for the bright future. Thus, we should begin an autonomous, pan-national global public discourse to fulfil everyone’s requirements, worries, thoughts and hopes. Furthermore, country’s governments should sponsor various independent multi-field research assessing social, ethical, legal, technological and environmental suggestions of future automation, while creating novel ideas for resolving problems those might arise. Finally, we should admit that our planning might be imperfect, because the future change complexity is beyond our present predictability.
