Strategy can be defined as a pattern of objectives, purposes, orgoals, and the major policies and plans for achieving these goals(Learned et al., 1983). However, conflict frequently exists overthe goals and the means of achieving them.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse and formulate a strategy plan to resolve the conflictWHile not major at this point, the objective of strategy is competitive success – the conflict is a symptom of something else and is a micro/OB issues, not the strategic problem nor a strategy-level nacro-issue. of the traditional (medical)drug induced psychiatric treatment and the new interactive (team) approach “milieu” therapyoperated at the Gold Coast Psychiatric Hospital (GCPH). Approaches to different types of therapy can result in different organisationaldesign and climatesit is a matter of fit, not one of A causing B – lets chat if this is not clear..  The first part of the paper discusses the diagnosis of the current situation of the industry and the GCPH as an organisation. In the diagnosis stage the new and innovative approaches made by the board members is analysed and compared to the manner of treatment hospital used as therapyno, the focus is not on the therapy – that is a group-level issue and is not strategic. – ring me please and let’s have a chat about ‘levels of analysis’..The analysis is based on the correct approach made by Dr. Stephenson, as an innovative business strategy for the hospital. Second half of this paper will discuss the plan to evaluate the appropriate strategy and plan. Finally an implementation strategy will be presented for GCPH in order to achieve its goals through utilisation of appropriate structure and resources.

GCPH was founded as a private psychiatric institution until the 1980’s when the hospital opened its doors for public patients. In the early years hospital enjoyed its reputation of being a successful private institution with its success of medical form of therapy. P

GCPH is run by a staff of doctors, who play the role of board of governors. The committee is made up of 12 physicians, the director of nursing and the director of technical and support staff with Dr. Stephenson as the chairperson of the hospital. The decision making process is democratic and the proposals are decided by ‘push and haul of debate’. Any kind of innovative approaches made by the authority of the hospital are discussed before implementation. I read the case (over 100 times!!!), so it is really not necessary to summarise it for me – is it?

Analysis of Psychiatrist Hospital industry

Based on the experiment conducted in England, it has been pointed out by Maxwell Jones that when mentally ill patients are confined in their rooms, it creates a negative effect of isolation upon the mental patients. Jones concluded that if the patients are made to do interaction, it would help them to gain stability as well as they will get a perception of reality. The experiment is known as ‘milieu therapy’. It was proposed that some public ward patients be offered the new therapy whereby patients can interact with others in the ward including technical staffs and nurses. strategy???

It is important to diagnose the situation of the industry before coming up with any kind of new innovative ideas according to the Outside-in view of strategy, the environment is the place to start for everything!  Now, what are all the different concepts andmodels we covered in outside-in and how do they related to each other and to the inside-out and emergent views???This is the focus for this paper, at least you have moved on to a relevant concept.  Now instead of just applying it to the case (which at least is a better than before, but is still Credit at best), link it to and integrate it with Porters stuff and Miles and Snow and then apply that to the case.. Business strategies are framework to conclude the best strategic fit in which the industry operates in. Therefore to understand the industry and GCPH as Psychiatric hospital, analysis is made using PESTLE:

Political	The Psychiatric Hospital industry has been growing over the past decade. The Australian healthcare system and its funding pathway are changing in the form of two-tiered funding system, Federal and State governments has improved the condition of the health care system.
Economic	Some services such as Medicare and private hospitals are run by the Commonwealth and other health care support system such as public hospitals and other services associated with it are run by the States and Territories (Mhsa.aihw.gov.au. 2016).
Social	Increasing awareness and acceptance on mental sickness has changed the direction of psychiatric industry. The health care system uses different approaches varying on the level on mental illness.
Technological	Technological advancements have opened up the scope for better research. This has given more ability and authority to health care staff to improve the condition of mental health patient.
Legal	Australian laws have guidelines that must be followed by every health care organization. Medications used by these organisations are also checked and regulated by medication regulation.
Environmental	If the situation of psychiatric hospitals is taken into consideration, it can be said that there is no such sustainability or environmental issues regarding the treatment or the therapies used to cure the patients suffering from mental illness.

Situation of hospitals and health service organisations has been improving with Government allocating budgets to support heath care system that are enjoyed by both private and as well public hospital systems. It can be pointed out that the government and the public bodies are focusing on the improvement to treat patients will mental illness through new innovative approaches treatments.

Keeping these factors in mind, an innovative approach was also undertaken by Dr. Stephenson to improve the treatment in the hospital. The introduction of milieu therapy was the best fitted approach at GCPH, however, his proposal was highly criticised.  Therefore taking elements of PESTEL, various approaches made by other health care systems are discussed below:

Approaches made by other psychiatric hospitals can be evaluated when considering the outside-in perspective in mind. There have been several approaches made by other mental care units to improve the manner of treatment. Some of the psychiatric disability support services can be discussed here:

Developments in Mental Health Care Organisations

Accommodation support:Enables a person suffering from any kind mental disability to remain in their existing accommodation or move to a suitable or appropriate place of their choice (Ahangama and Poo 2013).

Community support: Provides assistance with non-institutionalised living arrangements including therapeutic services, early childhood interventions, and behaviour and specialist interventions. while I appreciate your research into the mental health industry, it is not really necessary – where are Porter’s and Miles and Snow and Who, what, how etc???

Employment service: Employment services in an open labour market and supported employment service that would provide employment opportunities and assistance to work in a specialised and supported environments.

Respite service: In this type of service, the patients are given a short time break from families and other voluntary caregivers. These help seekers are given the same kind of treatment in another place by a host family.

Some of the mental health care approaches that have been discussed aboveindicate the importance of treating the mentally challenged people with other therapeutic approach other than confining them to medicine and severe mental treatment. Therefore, the milieu therapy that has been proposed by Dr. Stephenson is an appropriate approach for the patients and the business in general.

As discussed in the case study,treatments that are provided by the nurses currentlyincorporate some form of the ‘milieu therapy’. Advantages and disadvantages to the therapy are as evidenced.

Advantages:

Interaction between the support staff and the patients was encouraged. Patients were able to make interaction with nurses and other staffs in absence of doctors

In certain situations interactions with nursing staff and other patients showed improvement to medical condition.

This new approach might prove to be attractive to the help seekers and is in fact a defender strategy to fight with the other competitors in the market.

Disadvantages

However to treat the mentally ill patients under the new therapy require more resources such as psychiatrists and trained nurses which creates additional expense. This then creates issue of funding for the hospital.

According to Blackmore and Nesbitt (2013), every business organisation should look for new and better opportunities in the market and think of better approaches in their organisation to improve the condition of the business. Approaches might not be necessary but at times, these changes often can help improve the output of the business.

Based on Miles and Snow theory and an organisation may consider four strategic types to improve their business. These strategic types arewhy are you reproducing this for me?  I know it and reproducing this just shows me you can read and write – I need to see how you can think!:

Defenders strategy: When an organisation attempts to protect its market from the new competitor, the organisation is forced to consider making certain changes such as adjustments to their technology, structure and policies. The defenders try to improve the existing condition of the organisation giving it a stable environment.

Prospector strategy: When an organisation implements certain innovative strategies, it automatically seeks for new opportunities with some form of risk for growth opportunity.These organisations are automatically the creators of change and uncertainty and the competitors are bound to respond on these strategies.

Analyser strategy: The analysers attempts to maintain their current business and to be innovative in their new business. They mainly focus on retaining their stable customers while attempting for balancing an efficient production and creative lines. However, accounting and financial perspectives are always taken into account.

Reactor strategy: In this strategy businesses have no particular consistent structure in place and the changes adopted in the organisation are merely to the response of environmental threats and opportunities. Sometimes, an organisation aims to reduce the cost of operation and may fail to respond to the innovative approach. Mostly, the failed organisations are a result of reactor strategy.
