The paper mainly reflects on the 2018 Winter Olympics that was mainly held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The event of 2018 Winter Olympics will be executed in three stages that are formation stage, growth stage as well as staging step (Kavanagh, Rochford and Bussa 2015). It is found that with the help of the event life cycle model, the different aspects of the event are identified as well as elaborated. The event lifecycle mainly consists of a number of phases that are needed for organizing the entire event successfully by delivering an event in a very much controlled as well as consistent manner. The various stages of the 2018 Winter Olympics are mainly elaborated below.
Formation stage of the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics
According to the event life cycle, the formation stage of an event is considered to be crucial. In this particular stage, proper preparation for the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics must be done so that the event will be conducted successfully (Kim, Choi and Kaplanidou 2015). It is found that the opening ceremony for the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics was made available to more than 200 countries around the World. In addition to this, it is found that no Olympic event will be held at the stadium and the stadium will be utilized only for the opening as well as a closing ceremony (Cho, Min and Kim 2018). The entire plan in the formation stage will be made according to it. Moreover, proper arrangement for the rainbow children’s choir is mainly made for the opening ceremony. A proper plan as per the Team GB Winter Olympics 2018 target is made for determining the names of the games that will be conducted and the needed investment for arranging the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics.
The growth stage of the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics
As per the event, life cycle model growth stage must be arranged in such a way that the event would be helpful in creating a positive impact on the audience and on the bottom line of the project. However, it is found that development of conditions for profitability generally requires when to invest and when to save. In the growth stage, proper design about the event must be created that helps in reflecting the entire plan about the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics (Lee and Son 2016). Moreover, it is found that in this stage proper information regarding event space assignment, signage creation, sponsor logistics, staffing plan as well as event insurance plans are also designed so that the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics will be conducted successfully. Moreover, it is identified that bidding as well as election arrangement will also be made and according to which Munich bid for hosting the games.
The staging of the Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics
As per the event lifecycle model, the staging phase is considered as one of the most important phases in the event. In this phase, Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics game will be executed. For staging, Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics, an announcement for the formation of Pyeongchang 2018 Coordination was generally made (Alexander, Kim and Kim 2015). As per the plan, the Coordination commission will be headed by Kim Jin Sun. In the staging of Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics, it is found that an opening ceremony will be arranged that will be held in the stadium of Pyeongchang Olympic on 9th February 2018 (Krasicki 2014). The facilities that are needed are generally utilized for the opening as well as closing the various ceremonies of the Olympics with subsequent Paralympics that was mainly demolished with a proper conclusion.
After then the sport was mainly featured 102 different events over 15 different types of disciplines in 7 sports making the Winter Olympics the first winner for surpassing the medal events. It is identified that six new events generally exist in the sports that were mainly introduced in the Winter Olympic (Bhatt, Manadhata and Zomlot 2014). Furthermore, for accommodating the primetime broadcasts, figure skating events are generally scheduled with starting time in the morning. The scheduling practice that is done mainly helps in affecting the events including different skaters that adjusts as per the modified schedule and attendance level of the entire session themselves (Kiktev et al. 2018). Moreover, round eight to eleven different biathlon events are scheduled during the night by making it very much necessary for the competitors to shoot as well as ski under the flood nights with blustery winds as well as colder temperature. The closing ceremony of Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics will be held in the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium on 25th February 2018 (Krasicki 2014). After that, the IOC president Thomas Bach declare the closure of the game. Thus, it is found that the entire event lifecycle is followed starting from the formation stage to the closure stage for successfully organizing the event. After this, the broadcast rights of Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics are generally sold to some of the countries including the local rights of the game.
It is found that proper investigation is undertaken to analyze the future development of the event destination and for this proper recommendation is generally elaborated by highlighting the concerns that are related with the sustainability of such types of events.
Event venue and accommodation: Event venue, as well as accommodation for the participants, must be arranged quite sustainably so that it does not create any type of impact. In addition to this, it is quite necessary to inform the participants about the various regional participants while avoiding the various types of environmental impact whenever required. Moreover, proper key measures including waste management, procurement of various product and services as well as water management must be done.
Waste management: Sustainable Waste management is one of the major steps that help in the sustainable development of the event successfully. The event planners must take the responsibility of avoiding waste by taking proper steps that help in reducing waste. Moreover, utilization of ecologically advantageous packaging must be used for the food items so that volumes of waste that do not create any impact on the environment and the arrangement of the event will be done quite effectively. In addition to this, installation of waste collection points is considered to be important for the separate collection of various types of waste functions. This must be taken for sustainably developing the event in the future.
Eco-management: As per the stakeholders, it is found that the event which was organized for Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics generally include more than lakh participants and it generally poses a major logistical challenge for the organizers of the event. In order to resolve this problem and for organizing the event sustainably in the future, it is quite necessary to use eco-management. Implementation of environmental management system must be launched that helps in providing a proper framework within which the internal responsibilities for the different levels are generally specified.
Procurement of products and services: Proper attention must be put in context to the environmental concerns that are mainly related with the procurement procedures. Proper considerations about the criteria of the environment must be considered when the requirements ate properly specified. In addition to this, reducing of paper use and recycling of paper is considered as one of the important steps in reducing waste as well as improving sustainable development.
