Innovation, Science and Technology have the power to solve problems but in medicine, this has brought human disaster. Over the years, the world has ascribed power to innovation, science and technology. New discoveries become breakthrough to humanity because of the solutions they bring. In medicine, scientific research has come up with celebrated as well as unsuccessful inventions. A report by Stolberg (1997) in New York Times examines a life experience of a prominent couple who try to concieve through test tube babies in vain. Learned friends Mr. Albano and Ms. Alisberg invest in reproductive medicine in an effort to deliver their own children. Although they finally consider adopting, they are among many couples who suffer the pain of wasting time and resources in a scientific quest. Edward (1997) discusses his background in an article entitled Understand. It mentions a terrifying experience in which he faces hospitalization for years only for this experience to leave sad memories. He recalls getting services from therapists who were too eager to receive payment for solutions that they did not provide. He also came across abusive psychiatrists. Seizer (1996) presents an interesting discourse about the imperfect human body. In his articles, the biological malfunctions is an indication of the inevitable, death. He brings out the challenge faced by surgeons when performing an operation of a patient.
These articles are an indication of the failure of medicine to emerge as a powerful solution to human health. In his opinion Seizer, (1996) views the surgery as a critical role that places a surgeon at the same position as the priest. Standing between a human body and the soul, surgeons have handled numerous terminal cases. No wonder patients give their consent by signing papers to avoid legal suits that come after a surgery gone bad. These are examples of common unethical practices, which have been in existence for ages. For example, infertility has been a concern across decades (Stolberg, 1997). Though there are numerous discoveries, which have comes announced as breakthrough solutions, problems still linger. Globally, there are countless medical malpractice issues. These affect both the rich and famous, children and adults. Anyone is prone to sicknesses and rich people have spent fortunes trying to save their lives only to succumb to common illnesses. Although mistakes can occur, no practitioner wants to take responsibility, for the worst. Some of these are scary ordeals arising out of utter negligence and disregard for human life. The American Institute of Medical Sciences & Education agrees that things go wrong during medical procedures (AIMS, 2015).
Despite technological advancement in reproductive health, millions still suffer from infertility (Stolberg, 1997). This shows the failure of technology in some areas. Although technology is a powerful force that has brought about robots for orthopedic use and diagnostic machines for effective screening, it still has gaps. Discoveries in reproductive health continue to encounter challenges as patients face medical risks such as birth defects. On the other hand, scientists continue to invest in lab research to find ways of implanting an embryo into the uterus successfully. Infertility affects both men and women and egg donation becomes an option for childbirth. Reproductive health practices such as fertilization may be common and successful in some cases but it costs a fortune (Hertzlinger, 2006). Governments and non-governmental bodies invest in the practice yet many people cannot access it. Money, science and technology will not completely answer the fertility problem. The inability to conceive wears many people emotionally, physically and financially. Many women have complained of terrible side effects caused by family planning drugs and a case of misdiagnosis left a man without effective reproductive organs (AIMS, 2015). Surgeons, pharmacists, physicians and all kinds of medical practitioners tend to make mistakes.
Edward Christopher’s article carries an irony of how modern medicine purports to offer solutions yet fail miserably (Edward, 1997). He recalls how his mother had suffered from cancer and the agony of depending on tranquilizers to relieve pain, reduce insomnia and symptoms of painful illnesses. From research, such medication has turned many into drug addicts who cannot do without such drugs (AIMS, 2015). Medical treatments sometimes have the worst side effects. Nausea, headaches, constipation, memory loss, and skin irritation are some of the side effects that medical treatments have. It is common to find labels with precaution against these side effects. The power of medicine and its failure continues to raise eyebrows about its effectiveness (Hertzlinger, 2006). Wrong procedures may lead a patient into the wrong hands. This explains why a simple procedure led to an almost double surgery on the same patient (AIMS, 2015). When mistakes go wrong and patients are at the mercy of the medical practitioners, their fate is in the hands of the unknown. No wonder medical practitioners like surgeon require proper training and a good medical record (Seizer, 1996).
Hertzlinger (2006) acknowledges the failure of modern medicine pointing out that the mode of packaging and deliverying it makes it a failure. The article brings out medical errors as contributing to numerous deaths in the US. Globally inefficiency denies millions of basic heath care. Professionally trained experts in various medical fields are not perfect (AIMS, 2015). They spend years in training and practical tests but human beings are different and no single case is the same. Mistakes can and have happened due to their personal weaknesses, or accidents. Since to err is human, it is not strange for a doctor to leave a screw driver in a patients’s spine after surgery. Patients have received surgeries when they did not deserve one. Others have been misdiagnosed and given medical treatment that does not belong to them. It is also common for lab technitians to switch blood samples giving wrong samples and specimens in patient’s records. Professional bodies like AIMS ( 2015) cite examples of these cases with consequenses hoping to enlighten the society of the challenges faced by medical practices. New born babies have lost their lives during childbirth due to negligence from the nursing team too.
The expensive cost of healthcare means those who have the power of money have a better chance of survival than the poor people do. The cost of health care is too high and insurance companies have lost trust in providing affordable and reliable medical plans (Hertzlinger, 2006). Balancing the cost of health care and client needs is a challenge for many health care centers because of the conflicting business models. It is one thing for a fertility health plan to cost a fortune, it is yet another for it to make mistakes. Records identify such a case example in which a fertilization process went wrong with a DNA mix up (AIMS, 2015). When preventive medicine becomes poisonous then medicine siezes to become a solution. The high costs of quality medical care makes it inaccessible to the poor. Though meant to save humanity, medical science continues to become a luxury. Poor people have access to low quality drugs and medical procedures. Many people have died in emergency rooms because they could not raise the required amount of money required for medical care. the subsidization of healthcare costs does not mean consumers can not make contributons.
The aim of health care innovation is to develop products and treatment solutions that enhance heath care (Hertzlinger, 2006). The incorporation of business models into a human service makes it difficult to balance costs and human services. The use of improved drugs continues to create complaints about delivery procedures and consumers find themselves taking the wrong drugs. Medical implants have gone wrong because of errors and ommissions (AIMS, 2015). Some people have paid the ultimate price for lack of money. Consumer trends have also pushed the innocent into adapting the worng kind of medication in an attempt to find solutions. Services and products in health care suffer from exploitation by greedy innovators who are out to cash in on the unsuspecting. Therefore quaity health care is superior yet it comes with challenges. Despite the benefits of innovation in health care, its shortcomings have also been grave.
Conclusion
In conclusion the power of medical innovation has a number of loopholes. Though meant to benefit the human race, its impact is not efficient. This is due to the increasing cases of malpractice in various medical fields. Ranging from misdiagnosis, mistreatment to failed experiments, medical science proves elusive in some incidences. Reproductive health remains of the most contentious with cases of wrong fertilization procedures, high cost of services and side effects. Medical practitioners acknowledge their limitations but patients entrust their lives in the hands of the medical experts. Proven records of failed medicine is an indication that innovation, technology and practitioners in medicine can make mistakes. The increase in medical malpractices calls for plicy changes to streamline critical health care services. However, this does not mean an end to the misfortunes faced by patients.
