Christine waited at the end of the park for her friend to arrive. The hot summer night was balmy with just a slight breeze. The scent of Jasmine surrounded her. Each time a car drove past she receded into the bushes so that headlights would not fall on her.
On the stroke of mid-night, a torch flashed once along the path. She replied with a return flash. Shortly after, a tall figure in a pin-striped suit appeared and disappeared as the figure moved between the shadows of the pathway.
Finally, her friend arrived.
Maryanne looked immaculate in one of her father’s suits and wearing a matching Fedora. No one would pick her disguise, except for a tight, blond, ponytail at her neck. Thankfully her father had changed jobs and would not notice the missing pinstripe suit.
The year is 1963 and this is the only way to enjoy and explore each other’s company. Their Christian parents would disown them, their friends would be horrified, the police would arrest them.
This was their secret and for a few hours a week it was bliss to be together.
They walked along the path to the river in a firm embrace, to find a comfortable out of the way nook. They paused and hid as they heard stifled laughter and voices just a little way ahead. As their eyes adjusted to the darkness they saw a man and a woman wildly performing to their hearts delight just beside the river. The moonlight caught glimpses of their bodies as they moved back and forth on a small car rug.
Christine and Maryanne watched with glee as their own passions rose to a surprising level. Neither had shared their body with a man, both felt a curious heat warming their body as they watched. The curiosity turned to boredom and their interest returned to each other.
They stayed quiet hoping that the couple would move away and they could continue with their own rendezvous. Sitting in the shadows silently caressing Maryanne’s bare skin so as not to be seen, Christine heard a blood curdling cry. It was a choke, a gurgle, followed by the most painful cry she had ever heard. Both looked up to see the male figure dressing hurriedly dressing himself. He left carrying his jacket and shoes. The female lay silent and still.
