The event that was selected and attended was Fed Square live summer series. The Fed Square live event is an annual cultural event that takes place every year at the end of the year. A series of concerts from the various artists take place during the event. Fed Square live takes place in Melbourne each year. The purpose of the event is to provide entertainment to the people Melbourne. The event also aims at encouraging the local and upcoming talent to move forward. This year the event started on 23rd November. The events were held only on Thursdays. The dates of the concerts are 23rd November, 30th November, 7th December, 14th December and 21st December. All the concerts were held in the evening. Having personal experience of the event will make anyone understand what a spectacular concert it was. Since it was a free event local made sure that they attended this event almost on every Thursday (Visit Victoria home. 2017). People who attended the event were very happy and satisfied after attending the concerts.
To provide entertainment to the people
To promote social inclusion
To contribute to destination appreciation
To provide employment opportunities to local people
To benefit the local service providers (Fedsquare.com 2017)
The concept of triple bottom line
The concept of triple bottom line defies the traditional concept of business model which usually focused on one objective of gaining profit and increasing the sales of the company. According to triple bottom line, there are three focus points that an organisation should equally concentrate and channelize the resources in these are: Planet, People and Price. This concept shows that there are certain responsibilities that organisations have towards the environment and the society which should be recognized and actively managed by the company as well (Isil and Hernke 2017). The sustainability approach that is derived from this model ensures that the business creates value in the society and develops a better connection with the stakeholders. John Elkington, devised this concept has several new and old business organisations have recognized the importance of the concept (Tatari et al. 2015).
Principle of sustainability
R. Buckminster Fuller coined the five principle framework of sustainability, it is said to be the process of development that not only focuses on the financial and economic improvement of the organisation but also on the society and the environment equally. The five core principles are based on the five domains:
The Material Domain
The Economic Domain
The Domain of Life
The Social Domain
The Spiritual Domain
Analysis of the event on the basis of the sustainability principles
The organizer had put a lot effort into making the event successful it was evident from the way the events were organized and managed. More than half of the population of Melbourne was present to witness the event. Artists and bands like Amistat, Bec Sandridge, Pat Coyle Band, Kaiit and Zoe Ryan performed during the series. Even the local artists who performed during these events were very excited to perform for their local audience.
After the performance, it can be said that all the objectives were achieved. They were able to achieve their objective of social inclusion as people got a chance to socialize with one another. The language of music united the diverse cultural people (Getz and Page 2016). People from other parts of the state Victoria and people from other parts of Australia and World became witness the grand celebration. The event was in a real sense a cultural event which adds to the social domain of the principle of sustainability. Since outsiders also came to watch the events it can be said that the destination was also promoted. The goal of the cultural event was to bring cultural harmony in the city. It can be said that the event successfully created a cultural harmony with the various genres of music from classical to jazz to rock. The concerts succeeded in entertaining people with various preferences and tastes. The event was for people of all the ages as there were artists who performed old classical music or old rock and there were artists who are specialized in modern music. Some of the audiences’ loved Australian hip-hop so few local hip-hop artists were also there who successfully made the people enjoy (Getz and Page 2016).
Fed Square is a versatile host of events such as major public events, complex infrastructure, cultural institutions and a range of commercial operations, therefore the complication of environmental challenges are of many kinds, with the help of third parties and partners fed square is now said to be carbon neutral. This is in sync with the another principle of sustainability that caters with saving the planet and taking care of the environment.
The event was organized by the Fed Square Pty which is run by the Victorian Government. Fed Square is a part of the event co-presenter and hence the sustainability approaches taken by Fed Square can be said to be associate with this event as well. As a part of the sustainability approach the institution has been associated with the Melbourne renewable energy project. it is not only an environmental friendly project it is also a project that has the potential to generate job opportunities in the operation and the management department.
As far as the event is concerned, the numbers of audiences have been observed to increase from last year. As the show advanced gradually, people settled themselves (Ruhanen and Whitford 2014). There were Volunteers appointed who have taken an active role in managing the people or else the situation could have become worse. The infrastructure is planned in a way that it can adhere to the principles of sustainability on a daily basis. Major issues form such events cater to the six aspects: water, waste, energy, air, noise and landscaping. The planning of the building is such that it fixes all that issue. Some of the installations of the infrastructure are: To improve water efficiency upgraded mechanism of the Cooling Towers, Installation of sensor lighting in key areas, Installation of waterless urinals and AAA showerheads, Purchase of Green Energy for all events in The Square, Fed Square offices and the Fed Square Car Park etc are some of the features of the management of the event (Fedsquare.com 2017). All these aspects that are associated with the event makes it sustainable and adhere to the concepts of triple bottom line which not only focuses on making profit but also recognizes the responsibility it has towards the society and environment.
Impact of the event
Some of the impacts of the events were felt after the events ended. After the event ended people could see a lot of waste and litters. Local people had to take the initiative to clean the place as there were too much dirt and litter. This happened after every particular day the concerts were held. People had thrown bottles and plastics Events always leave a lot of impact on the environment. The concerts created a lot of noise and chaos. A large amount of energy was required for this event. Since there were many electronic types of equipment lot of energy was consumed for running this equipment (Li and Jago 2013).
The impact of the event on Melbourne and the people of the city was both positive and negative. Considering the positive aspects of the event it can be said that all the objectives and goals of the event were achieved. The concerts successfully entertained the people of Melbourne. It was the main aim of the event. It provided employment opportunities to the skillful people of the city (Andersson and Lundberg 2013). The employment, however, was seasonal but for the at least short span of time, it provided people some source of income.
The negative impact of the event was on the place, the people and the environment. Some of the people who disliked loud music could not enjoy the event. Not all people like concerts there are certain people who like orchestras and soft music. Although they did not attend the event but the music was very loud and they were affected by the loud noise. Among the impacts on the environment, one of the most severe one was that the animals were very much scared with the loud music. The impact was not limited to noise pollution (Kim, Boo and Kim 2013). There are land soil and water pollution as well. Air, water and soil pollution have a long-lasting impact on the people. Litters were seen not just on the venue but also near water bodies. Pollution near water bodies affects the animals as they go to drink water in those areas. Some animals swallow the plastic packets. Plastic packets can severely damage the health of the animals. The visitors threw garbage near the venue. The garbage mostly included eatables. These eatables when they rot they create foul smell and attract flies. Water bottles and vessels if thrown filled with water leads to growth of mosquitoes. Airborne and water-borne diseases are very likely to affect the people and the animals. Soil pollution causes the soil deterioration of quality of soil. Environmental impacts at times are long lasting. Water bodies if not immediately cleaned can create tremendous amount of both water and air pollution as the dirt keeps on floating in the water for many days. If the water quality is not good, the aquatic flora and fauna will be damaged. Moreover, a dirty environment reduces the beauty of place and its value in terms of a tourism product. Social impact of the event was positive as well as negative. Many people got opportunity to visit their friends and family (Jones 2014). They enjoyed the company of their friends, family and new acquaintances. The negative impact of this event is that the outsiders especially the tourists were not that much sensitive towards the diverse culture of Australia. Some people did few anti-social acts that affected other people. The acts included drinking alcohol, fighting and abusing. Fights and feuds are part and parcel of these kinds of events and it can be controlled but not completely stopped (Hamilton, Tee and Prideaux 2015). Different people have different personalities and therefore it is always challenging to manage that many audiences.
Conclusion
At last, it can be concluded from the visit that cultural events are required. No matter how challenging it is to organize and manage these kinds of events have a more positive impact and less negative impacts. The negative impacts can be controlled with the joint efforts of people, audience, local bodies, and Government. Proper volunteering can help n effective management can make cultural events successful. An initiative t create awareness among the people is required to be taken so that their responsible behavior would lead to sustainability.
