Three raps. They echoed in the room. They rang in her head. The heavy, rosewood gavel had decided that she was guilty. Through the absolute silence, a woman started sobbing.

She was an emaciated woman in a worn, grubby uniform. Her skin looked as clear as crystal. From a distance, she could have been mistaken for a child. Her appearance gave an unpleasant impression of frailty; her body was as bony as it could be wherever it was visible.

The chaotic cluster of chestnut hair cascaded below her shoulders but looked as though it had once been charmingly slick.

Both her arms rubbed her eyes carelessly. The tears were wiped onto her cheeks, her neck and eventually you could see teardrops trickling down her elbows. Her cry was not that of grudge or fear of the consequences that were waiting for her, but something else. Something inexpressible. Her lips mumbled a few words, but no one could hear her. She felt disheartened to the bottom of her mind.

Although her sight was thickly blurred, it was obviously not enough to stop her freakish reactions towards the two black figures approaching her.

Her arms were firmly grabbed by the two men as the continuous twitching and the trembling of her body worsened and became uncontrollable. The filthy, stubby fingers were grasping her uncomfortably tight and she was almost dragged along the floor towards the exit. Every eye focused on her, as if drawing sympathy towards a fluttering bird surrounded by hungering foxes.

As soon she heard the door shut behind, it was completely black.

The darkness was almost palpable and her eyes could not adjust to it, yet her body seemed to proceed forward into the direction that she was pushed. As endless series of numbers spun around in her head, she found it harder to remember the track of the route every minute. Dim light shone through the cracks at the bottom of the rooms along the corridor. All rooms were securely shut and locked, though giving away hints of activities that took place inside.

The screams of pain and agony became audible, despite her effort to be ignorant towards the victims who, she believed, were in the same situation as her. She tried shutting her eyes, although blocking out the frightening sound-effects was virtually impossible. The heavy breathing of the men became louder and louder, and her body shuddered at times.

They took a smooth turn and a distant dead-end was visible. Although she put in a great effort to fight against the tiredness, it had already started to overwhelm her. As she struggled to raise her eyelids, she managed to take a glance forwards to see that there were only a few rooms ahead.

“This must be it”, she whispered.

She reassured herself that it would all be finished in a few moments. The final room was unmistakably the one that was waiting for her. The doors were wide open, as if to welcome her. She was somehow intrigued by the warmth of the illuminating room, but the pleasant sensation soon disappeared by the stiffening of the grips on her wrists.

Perhaps this could have been something that was planned beforehand. It was so sudden. She was shoved into another cubicle. As she heard the door shut after her, a blinding light was turned on immediately. The men yanked her up, as if picking up a twig, and flung her onto something. It was the chair. She instantly crawled into a ball, frightened by the sharp iciness of the metallic touch that froze her from skin to bone.

However, she was soon straightened out and tied down by the swift movements of the faceless men. In the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of the electronic machines, repetitively blinking multiple colours. It suddenly struck her that only one button will be pressed. The silent power would flow down the wires on the spur of a moment; and she would, at last, be gone. She lay there, in the spotlight, waiting nervously for the button to be pressed. Her eyes slowly closed themselves, absorbing every beam of light before returning to darkness.

As a single bead of sweat rolled downwards, her forehead looked even paler than normal against the white light. It seemed very quiet, too quiet. As far as she knew, nothing had happened to her so far. She tried taking a deep breath, and realized that she was still alive.

As she attempted to open her eyes, the rolling eyes of a man met hers. He slowly observed her from head to toe, and showed a smile, that seemed to appear cynical in her blurry sight. He strode around the chair slowly, absorbing every detail that her body could tell him. Closing in on her, he ran a finger up her legs, which met the soft touch of the whiteness. Sensing her body tense, she turned towards the other man, apparently asking for help, but she had to remain helpless. It was then that she felt the dirty fingers groping her. She clearly knew that trying to fight back would not do any good, as she could not possibly move an inch. Neither could she make a single noise, although the silent bursts of tears continued with a strong feeling of self-pity. She had to take in the fact that she was just a vulnerable body.

All she could do was keep struggling to escape from reality. She had to become numb. She had to force her mind to believe that nothing was happening. Hypnosis was apparently not a good choice. She could still hear the tearing of her clothes, and feel the disgusting strokes all over her body. The repulsive heat from the hairy limbs was driving her into madness. She never wanted to be in this situation, again. As the feeling of bitterness whelmed up inside her, her mind twisted itself and eventually forced her into unconsciousness…

There was a ring her finger. She could see herself cry with such happiness. As her vision focused on the shimmering teardrops, she almost felt the touch of water streaming down from the sky that soaked her eyes. It appeared that there was also a man who sat opposite. His face was not clear enough to recognize, but she could sense the love between the couple.

‘Had my dream come true?’

‘Could it have been a terrible dream until now?’

Before she could ask herself another question, the vision was gradually blurred by a fast moving crowd of people brushing against her. From the distance, she could hear a voice. Something echoed. She searched for it, but could not make out the words. All of a sudden, everything began to shrink, as if a black hole had emerged in the centre. She desperately reached out, but could only grope the emptiness. It was then, that she heard the words. The words that comforted her, a little. The small phrase that meant a lot to her. It sang in her head. Over, and over again. ‘I love you’

That was the phrase, which made her final movement. There was a small twitch in her finger; and then she was gone. A woman lay on a chair, there, in the middle of a dim spotlight. She was now left in peace, although the occasional droplets of water from the straws of damp hair disturbed the stillness of the dark. The body was lifeless, though the corner of the mouth had tried to crawl upwards. It had smiled.
