The term ‘Innovation’ describes that it is the process of development ofbetter solutions which can satisfy the new requirements for an organization, system or for a consumer market (Drucker 2014). This type of innovation happens through the introduction of more effective products, services, process, business models and technologies in the consumer markets and in a specific type of organization. It is assessed that innovation mainly happens in a start-up organization rather than the existing companies.
This document will discuss how the organizations can use the information systems to achieve the innovation in their own organization or in the market field. For the discussion purpose, four examples of implementation of the information system for achieving the innovation will be assessed. Further, some of the success factors or the lessons learnings of implementing the information system in the organization will be discussed. Following that, the impacts of the internal factors will be evaluated. Finally, some recommendations and guidelines will be given in this document which will help the organization to get success in their effort of implementing innovations using the information system.
Examples of Information System for Innovation:
There are various types of innovation are made respective of the information system. While considering the most important innovations in the field of the information system, those are the telemedicine, augmented reality, digital learnings and the blockchain technology.
The first innovation regarding the information system is the Telemedicine. This is one of the rare innovations which has made human life easier more than ever. This innovative technology is used by the American Medical Association. The telemedicine innovation helps the healthcare professionals to diagnose, evaluate and treat the patients without directly physically involved with them (Kvedar, Coye and Everett 2014). This miracle has been achieved by implementation of the telecommunication technology. This innovation has affected so much the health care sector that now an important part of the healthcare sector now using the innovation of the telemedicine.
The telemedicine of today was started in the year of 1950 when few of the medical universities and the hospitals started to find some way to share the images and the information over the telephonic medium (Amadi-Obi et al. 2014.). The first success was achieved when two of the healthcare centre were successfully able to transmit the radiologic images over a telephonic medium. In the early development stage, this technology was used to connect doctors of different locations to develop more precise treatment process for the patients.
In the next several decades the technology of the telemedicine improved and now it has become an innovative technology which is helping in the healthcare industry. This has transformed into an innovative technology due to the vast rise of the internet and for profound changes in the telemedicine practices. Now for the communication purpose in telemedicine smart devices are used which are capable of transmitting high quality videos.
The next innovation regarding the information system is Augmented Reality. The augmented reality technology is used by the tech giant Google itself for entertainment purpose. The Augmented Reality works by layering artificial images and graphics over the real-life scenarios (Ong and Nee 2013). One of the most popular devices for experiencing the augmented reality is the Google Glass (Albrecht et al. 2014). The innovation of the augmented reality has shaken up the gaming industry after the introduction of it in the marketplace. Though it is presented in between of humans, still it is considered as one of the futuristic technology of present generation. In the pasts, there is various organization that had built the augmented reality technologies.
In the year 2009 there was a device which was presented by the MIT Media Lab. This device was named SixthSense which was consisting of a small projector, mirror, camera and a smartphone (Desale and Ahire 2013). The four sensors of the device were used for manipulating the images which were produced by the SixthSense device. The most emerging inventions regarding the augmented reality were the Google Glass which was introduced in the year of 2013 which made the augmented reality technology more wearable to the humans. The application of the augmented reality is written by using of a special 3D program which permits the developer to integrate the animations and graphics into the real world objectives, which makes the real world objective more attractive.
The next innovation regarding the information system is digital learning. The digital learning is one of the most important innovations in the education sector. This digital learning is used by the automobile giants Toyota for the training of motor technicians and engineers. The digital learning is the process of learning which is incorporated with the technology that provides the learners with some control to their study materials over the path, place and time (Gee 2013). By the implementation of this innovative technology, learning is no longer limited within the lecture times. This technique of digital learning helped the learners to learn anytime irrespective of the time (Maloney et al. 2013). Considering the place, this innovative technology provides access to study materials from anywhere, where this service is accessible. The path is the most important aspect of this innovative technology.
The properties of the path define that the learning is no longer the only dependant on the instruction of the teacher. The adaptive and interactive software of digital learning assists the students to learn new things in their own way. This makes the learners engage with the learning content actively. The new technologies of learning provide real time data to the teachers about the students (Van Acker et al. 2013). This real time data helps the teachers to decide how to adjust the instruction for a specific type of students.
The blockchain technology is another innovative technology in the context of the information systems. This blockchain technology is used by the world’s biggest logistic company FedEx for tracking high value cargo. The blockchain technology is one of the most important innovation in the field of cryptocurrency. The blockchain is considered as the growing list of data or records which are known as the blocks of the system (Swan 2015). These blocks are linked with each other by the use of the cryptography. Each of this block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block of it which is used for safeguarding the actual data.
The blockchain technology does not allow the digital information to be copied by others, rather than it only allows the information to be distributed over the network (Kosbaet al. 2016). By implementing this technology, the blockchain technology has introduced a new backbone for the internet as it secured the transaction service more over the internet. This innovative technology was introduced for the digital currencies like the Bitcoin and Litecoin for a secure transaction over the internet (Reid and Harrigan 2013. This is a typical digital ledger which is incorruptible for all the valuable assets transactions through online, including the financial transactions also.
Some success factors and lessons learned from the innovative projects:
Telemedicine Projects:
While considering the success factor of the telemedicine, it is obvious that there are various success factors of the project. The main success factor for the projects are the identifying the compelling needs, active involvement of the healthcare professional and for the decision makers, preparation and implementation of the change management plan whenever required (Zhang et al. 2017). Also, the other success factors for the telemedicine projects are the establishment of this service as legal services, monitoring the service quality, implementation of planning for the business and maintaining good relations with the vendors of the project.
In this innovation also teaches some of the lessons regarding the project. The main lesson, in this case, was the limited mobility of the physician. From the innovative project of the telemedicine, it has been learned that the physician must always present within the healthcare centre of the rural areas to handle all the tasks effectively. Leaving the main centre in the official duty hours can create a dispute in the healthcare services. Thus the mobility of the physician stopped in this case.
Augmented Reality:
The main success factors for a perfect augmented reality innovation is the latency, orientation errors on the tracking of distant objects and the noise. With these, another success factor for the augmented reality is spatial tracking. This tracking refers to the augmented reality capabilities of how it keeps tracks of various objects in a single instance, captured by the device camera (Miller et al. 2014). The display output of the processed system is also an important success factor as the final output of any product attract or pleases the customer.
With various success factors, some learnings have been also assessed by the innovation of the Augmented Reality. It has been learned thatthere is a problem in recognition of the boundary between the virtual world and the physical world. Another learning is that a vast environment is needed to prepare the technology for the augmented reality.
Digital Learning:
The digital learnings also consist of various success factors to provide a better learning experience to the learners. The main success factor of digital learning is the implementation of the videos in the learnings material, user experience and inspiring content. Video can easily demonstrate a hard topic and can make it easy to understand which considered as a significant success factor in this case (Siemens 2014). User experience also important as this decides that the learner will use this service in the near future or not. Content is also an important factor for success. If the content of the learnings is good and easy to understand then, it would generally hold a high success factor of the digital learning innovation process.
It has also been learned that digital learning is also facing some kind of problems. The first problem is the resistance to change where many peoples do not want to add new technologies in the education department and want to stick with the old traditional process of learning. Another big issue is the technical skill of the learner. The learner may not be able to take full advantage of the digital learning thus this innovation becomes obsolete for those type of learners.
Blockchain:
The success of blockchain technology depends on some of the very important factors. The first factor is the ease of use of blockchain technology. The blockchain technology must be understood by all it should be easy for all to use this technology. The second success factor is the security factors of the e-wallets. Blockchain was introduced for mainly the security purpose and for greater acceptance in the society the blockchain technology must secure the digital transactions properly.
Though the blockchain technology is a very much secured way for the digital transaction, it still faces some of the issues which are learned in this case. The main problem with it is that this technology doesn’t have any type of regulation (Peters, Panayi and Chapelle 2015). Thus it creates a risky environment. In the preliminary stage, this technology is very much tough to handle for the normal peoples. Also, this type of heavy technologies is very much slower in the execution process which creates a huge problem in the busy schedule of the humans.
Impacts of the Internal and the External Factors on the innovation:
Telemedicine:
The main internal factors which are affecting the innovation of the telemedicine are the organizational factors and the individual factors. Considering the organizational factor, the main impact on the telemedicine is the implementation of more advanced technology for communication (Vaishnavi and Kuechler 2015). The organization is helping to increase the infrastructure of the communication which is a success factor. The individual factors are the physicians who are maintaining this innovative technology by giving proper service. This is also a success factor.
While considering the external factor, the main factor, in this case, is the environmental factor. In some of the rural areas, it is impossible to install a broadband system for communication due to the environment which is a failure in this case.
Augmented Reality:
The internal factor for the augmented reality is the individual factors. The main factor works, in this case, is the comfort factor as this is a kind of wearable devices (Vinales 2015). These devices are easy to handle, and it does not restrict the normal movement of humans. Thus this internal factors can be considered as a success factor.
The main external factor is the social factor in this case. The community still considers it a technology of future and adoption of this type of technology is very minimal. Thus this factor is contributing to the failure of the augmented reality innovation.
Digital Learning:
Considering the internal factors, the organizational factors have a vast impact on digital learning. The organizational factor was always very much important for the success of digital learning. The organizational factors control the learning culture. Proper learning culture will obviously contribute to the success of digital learning.
Considering the external factors, the main two factors are the social factors and the technological factor. In the social case this innovative technology has been accepted all around the world (Mohammadyari and Singh 2015) as it simplifies the learning process and concerning the technological aspect, this technology is very easy to use which has contributed in the success of the digital learning innovation.
Blockchain:
The internal factor which has impacted the blockchain most is the organizational factor. In the organizational factor has contributed to the success of this emerging technology as most of the organizations are implementing and developing the blockchain (Sen and Borle 2015) for the transactional process to secure it more.
Considering the external factor, the main factor is the social factor that has impacted the blockchain most. It actually contributed to the failure of the blockchain technology as social acceptance of this technology is very minimal due to its complex nature.
Recommendations:
Conclusion:
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that the information system related innovations are very much crucial for most of the organizations to reach to their organizational goals. While considering the role of the information system in the innovation management it has some of the important task to do. This includes supporting the operations by inclusion of payroll, storing and preparing, record storage of the employees. Further, it also increase the efficiency of the employees and also improve the productivity. In the technological field introduction of a novel device can be considered as an innovation. Actually, the innovation implies that it is the process which gathers various types of novel ideas that will help the society or the community in a more effective way. In the economy of the industry, these innovations are introduced to meet the growing demand of the customers in the marketplace.
In this paper, a brief discussion has been done on four examples of the information system related innovation. Some of the success factors for those innovation examples has been assessed. Also, some lessons have been learned from those innovation examples which has been discussed in this paper. There are several internal and external factors which are having a vast impact on the information system enabled innovation. These internal and external factors have been discussed thoroughly in this document. Following that, some recommendations have been shared to help the organizations to succeed in the effort of innovation using information system.
