Well this goes back to 2015 just after the earthquake hit Nepal. The experience with earthquake was tragic enough for us back then until I lost someone who was very important for me. I had a best friend who I grew up together with. She was the sweetest person I’ve came across in my entire life. The most amazing daughter, sister and an amazing friend. It was July of the year 2015 just 3 months after the tragic earthquake.
I remember I was just going through my social media on my phone and suddenly I get a call from one of my friends and that’s when everything changed, my friend told me that my bestfriend whom I’ve known my whole life, the bestfriend I’ve spent my entire childhood to adulthood is no more. At first I thought it was some kind of accident but when I came to know the actual reason I was devastated that’s when my life changed.
She had committed suicide. All the time we’ve got to know eachother I described her as a very strong individual someone who was always there when I cried and someone who always gave me strength to overcome anything that bothered me. I couldn’t understand why she did that. It took me about almost a year to overcome the loss of my friend and move on. All that time what was more devastating was the reason for her committing suicide was that she was sexually abused in other words she was raped.
Raped by her own uncle. And to my shock it was happening to her from last 6 years. I didn’t know behind that strong, bold and independent girl hid so much pain. We would’ve never found out it was her uncle who exploited her and led her to darkness where she was forced to kill herself if we didn’t find the note she left for her loved ones’. Though the person was punished for his deeds I don’t think that was enough as a mother lost her dear child, a brother lost his only sister and a friend who lost her only source of happiness. She didn’t deserve the darkness after all we were just teenagers back then. That’s when I decided to study social work and help individuals who are dealing with the same problem and help them recover.
Well sexual assault or violence occurs or is happening in every corner of the world. Sexual assault is a very devastating experience that robs anyone of their livelihood. Not only women but many men are also the victim of sexual assault. Rape is a common form of sexual assault. It is committed in many situations on a picnic, or a date by a friend or an acquaintance or when you’re alone. Sexual assault is always wrong, whether the abuser is someone you date, the spouse, a family member, an acquaintance or a stranger. Although the consequences should be faced by the abuser not the victim. The victims are not at fault but the one who committed the crime is. After all you didn’t cause the abuse to occur, and you are not responsible for the violent behavior of someone else.
Basically, the people who commit such acts are sick, mentally disturbed because such crimes are committed with the full knowledge about the damage hauled to the victims. As we all know sexual assault are mainly oriented towards women, which is clearly focused on fulfilling the desire or the sexual drive not thinking about the damage that is made to the one they assault. The worst thing is that these offenders if they are not punished the first time, will assault someone else again and this never stops. Our society is compromised by such actions, which is clearly of concern to everyone. Also in order to hide the ugliness of their own acts they murder the victim so that there is no evidence for the investigation. There are very few who speak up against the ugly act because many commit suicide because facing our society and feeling good about yourself is very difficult when you live in Nepalese community. We’re not allowed to speak or raise our voices against the ugly act because if we do we destroy our reputation along with our parents’. This is the sad reality of our society. We were brought up in a community where we grow up with the responsibility to never let our so called so society judge the upbringing of our parents.
To avoid sexual assault the very first thing we need to do is change our minds on these topic. It is not wrong to talk about something or someone that’s bothering you. Society is where we live, people will keep judging you no matter what, no matter you’re a millionaire or a person who earns. They will never stop judging you. We need to start talking about these issues with everyone. Sex education is very important these days. Not every boy is a rapist but the so called society and the people in it need to educate their sons not to act like animals and destroy lives for their own satisfaction. If only the people of our so called society were open about these factors the world would be a better place to live. Strict laws need to be implemented the rapists. All we need to do is punish rapists in such a way that the next time someone has a sexual drive and tries assaulting someone’s daughter, or someone’s wife, someone’s mother or someone’s sister they fear thinking about the punishment. Also women need to be bold enough to say ”NO”. They need to be able to say ” GET YOUR HANDS OF MY BODY”. No matter its’ your husband, your boyfriend, friend or an acquaintance ”NO MEANS NO”
To conclude, I would like to emphasize that sexual assault poses an obstacle to peace and security. Everybody deserves to feel safe and secure in their life. Many women loose their health, self esteem, their family and even their lives due to such ugly acts. I lost a friend who was more like a sister to me while a mother lost her daughter and a brother lost his only sister. This needs to stop. The change starts from yourself. If we change we can make our society a very happy place to live in. Latly, I hope you’re in good hands friend. You’re missed everyday. Rest well.
