Could you imagine feeling lonely and cold just from words from a book? Did it ever make you feel as if the words were meant just for you? This week I chose “The Winter Evening Settles” by: T.S. Eliot. In this poem I felt like the author was describing a cold long lonely winter day in the city. Imagine feeling the cold breeze on your face while listening to the hustle and bustle of the city in the pouring down rain.
This poem describes a lonely empty feeling. I think that the writer was gloomy and sad. I think that he was setting the tone for imagery using words we could imagine what was going on in his head.
“With the smell of steaks in passageways” (line 2), lets us know that someone is cooking, and the aroma is floating into the street. He makes it seems as if he is standing on the street or in the window looking outside.
“And now a gusty shower wraps/ The grimy scraps/ Of withered leaves about your feet/And newspapers from vacant lots” (5-8). I took from this line that a windy rainstorm has begun and is blowing leaves and newspapers around. The images that I took I got from it was a clear vision of a lonely boy either standing in the rain or looking outside. The poem continues with “The showers beat/ On broken blinds and chimney-pots” (9-10), which illustrates that the rain has begun to come down harder and stronger, and the raindrops are pounding on ‘the broken blinds’, which also makes me think he is outside in need of shelter or the shelter he is in needs to be fixed.
Turning his attention away from the storm, Eliot writes “And at the corner of the street/ A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps.” (11-12).
The lonely cab displays that the world is quiet, that everyone has gone home and retired for the evening. The horse pulling this cab is also getting quite restless in the rainstorm. In his final line, “And then the lighting of the lamps” (13) displays that darkness has fallen, as everyone is lighting their lamps and the natural light has turned into night.
In this poem T.S. Eliot was talking about gloomy and sadness he might have felt. He described in great detail his sadness and unhappiness. He uses our five senses to also help us get a better understanding of his feelings. In line 2 he uses smell with the steak smell of the passageways. He also uses touch with the feeling of the rain falling down. Overall, the poem gave us the feeling from the authors eyes and. how he feels
