Discuss about the Trend to Over Protecting Children for Implications on their Development.
Childhood is the period that symbolizes fun, entertainment and living life to the fullest. Children are regarded as the form of God who is unaware of the complexities and worldly stuff. They are like the raw clay that can be transformed into a figure of choice. Their minds are open vessels that can be filled with various thought process. Their curiosity level is also high, that provide scope for leaning and development (Lereya, Samara, and Wolke, 2013, pp.1091-1108). Many scholars have put their efforts extensively to understand how a child’s development can be made effective and if there is any particular way to define it, in the best possible way. It involves a wide range of activities that includes outdoor games, sports, etc. to involve children and this will help in their self-development and will also add to their learning process (Raboteg-Saric, and Sakic, 2014, pp.749-765). In the past few years, a lot of researchers have shown their interest in exploring this area to a great extent and also tried to build a connection or relationship over-protection of children and their overall development (Collins, Duncanson, and Burrows, 2014, pp.557-568). Conventionally, such relationships were not able to establish, and thus no appropriate ideas were available for the child development and over-protection. However, recently a well-structured model was formulated by the researchers to observe the impact of parental protection that is impacting the learning and development process of childhood (Donath, Graessel, Baier, Bleich, and Hillemacher, 2014, p.113). This model has shifted the traditional relationships of child care and took an effort to reform it into steps to make a better way of development of children. The emphasis of the modern philosophy was changed and tried to establish new concepts and principles. Traditionally, child development was carried out with a lot of emotional care and family involvement. However, with technological development, most of the attentions of children are getting attracted towards digital games and indoor plays (Brown, and Iyengar, 2008, pp.14-38). According to my understanding, over-protection is affecting the overall growth and development of children. The current discussion will focus on some of the major reason that just justifies my viewpoint and would project some areas of development for parents as well.
Parents of the current generation are truly heading towards being more protective for their children. They deny them to go out and play; rather they insist them to be safe at home. This makes them confine to their own boundaries and limits their exposure. This might be the reason that many children are growing as an introvert who prefers to be comfortable within their peripheries (Donath, Graessel, Baier, Bleich, and Hillemacher, 2014, p.113). According to the parent’s point of view, the world today has become more selfish and each individual tries to get interested and profit of another. Children are the most innocent elements to be abused and mislead. For many, they can become a good source of income and for others can become a good means of entertainment. The increasing rate of crime associated with children has created havoc among the parents (Odenweller, Booth-Butterfield, and Weber, 2014, pp.407-425). They try to put their full attention towards their safety and protection. The term Overprotective Parenting or Overprotecting Children is of great confusion and challenging too because it represents various combinations and forms of styles and practices of parenting. According to Baumrind’s parenting concepts, over-protectiveness of parents for their children could be related to permissiveness and authoritarianism. The same will be discussed in the subsequent sections. Overprotective parents can really affect the overall personality development of their children by limiting them to many exposures and incorporating a sense of fear and consciousness for everything (Lereya, Samara, and Wolke, 2013, pp.1094-1108). Basically, in such cases, the self-esteem of children gets highly affected. This results in limiting the children to take-up any kind of charge or risks in life, assuming that they are not yet prepared for it or not capable of handling it. Cases of those kinds will create fear in their minds, and that would lead to serious consequences in the future (Odenweller, Booth-Butterfield, and Weber, 2014, pp.407-425). In many situations, the upbringings would define if the child will have a pleasant personality or will grow-up as stubborn adults.

Her research was primarily based on various ways and types of parents and their impact on the society. Baumrind’s parenting concepts focus on the fact that over-protectiveness of parents for their children could be related to permissiveness and authoritarianism. Parenting style is fully dependable on the psychological level of parents and their capability of constructing various strategies and principles to grow up the children (Collins, Duncanson, and Burrows, 2014, pp.557-568). As, children go through different stages of life, the consciousness of parents also gets changed along with their perceptions of taking the things and the environment surrounding them. In the year 1960, Pillar theory was formulated by Baumrind that highlight the type of relationship that needs to be developed between parents and children. Parenting practices include cultural values, inspirations and goals that need to be addressed together. Over-protection could impact the psychology of children as they might wonder what is going to happen. If something is happening, what is the logical justification behind it etc. (Collins, Duncanson, and Burrows, 2014, pp.557-568) Effective parenting would help in providing avenues for socialization, it adds to the physical health along with for psychological benefits. It helps in lowering the stress levels and avoids depression. It supports the improvement of the overall quality of life. It is high time for people to get aware of the fact that restriction would not help in adding value to the type of upbringings they want to give to their children. Rather, there is a need of critical thinking and effective decision making. Parents who are over-conscious of their kids should encourage them to take up risk in life. This is because; it will help them to face the realities of the world. It would also help in making them capable of facing challenges independently. A second area of improvement for the overprotective parents is that they should allow their child to do their homework or any kind of activities of their own (Thornton, 2014, pp.90-100). This will help in developing their self-dependent nature and they will learn not to depend on others. It will also help in earning respect and fame in the society or even within the family. A third area of improvement includes taking steps to make them understand the value and significance of self-esteem and how it will help in leading a better life in the future. They should also train them about their safety and self-protection. Conventionally, such relationships were not able to establish and thus no appropriate ideas were available for the child development and over-protection (Lereya, Samara, and Wolke, 2013, pp.1099-1108). Many articles and research also supports this argument. However, this debate is still difficult to clear as different people hold different types of perceptions. Some parents argue that they are over-protective because they do not want their children should face the issues and challenges they have gone through once. Others give the reason that their children do not have the age now to struggle. For that lot of time is there and gradually they will learn how to face things. The current discussion tried to focus on some of the major reason that just justify my viewpoint and would project some areas of development for parents as well.
