Depression reflects the stage, where the individuals feel lethargic towards the execution of the activities. The major drive behind this can be the tiredness and fatigue towards the daily drab monotony or implications of ongoing medical treatment (Kudinova, James and Gibb 2017). Along with this, experiencing traumatic incidence or loss of near and dear ones makes the individuals depressed. Based on these aspects, depression can be considered as a part of behavioral science.
Depression adversely affects the mental conditions of the individuals especially the children. Usually, the adults possess the capacity to cope with the depression, as they are aware that lamenting on the loss would not help them to move on in their life. However, the children lack this ability, as their maturity is in a raw stage. Due to depression, noticeable changes come in the behavior of the children. They are changes in the appetite needs; sleep disorder and sadness among others. These changes are neither planned nor reasoned (Claes, Luyckx and Bijttebier 2014). These reactions are the results of circumstances, into which the children are trapped. The only difference is that the adults can arrange for their own counseling, which the children need to be provided. Herein lays the correlation of the cognitive theory of learning. Provision of adequate care, guidance and support helps the children to come out of the phase of depression slowly and gradually.
According to psychodynamic theory, the major drive behind depression is biological factors. Based on this, it can be said that the psychic effect on the children is the most in terms of facing neglect from the parents or losing them at an early stage. If the child sees that the parent is loving other children, then they experience anger. Along with this, a sense of uselessness comes within them, making them sad (Healy and Sanders 2017). This expression can be correlated with the aspect of negative automatic thinking as proposed by Beck in this theory related to cognition. These behaviors obstruct the growth and development of the children.
Transmission of incorrect information to the children about the parents or their surroundings is the errors in logic, as proposed in the Beck Theory. The immediate result of this is shock, followed by depression, creating a negative image of the self within the children. This negative self adds to the negativity related to the worldly image of the children. Countering this, the maturity of the children are not fully developed at this stage for grasping the worldly aspects. The teenage children are excluded from the group, as they start developing maturity (Chorpita, Brown and Barlow 2016).
The aspect of operational conditioning in behavioral theory and the sociological theory can be correlated. The major drive behind this correlation are the circumstances, which generate negative vibes within the children. For example, if the child sees the loss of a loved one, a sense of fear and anxiety comes over them. These reactions are the response of the stimulus. Feeling sad and depressed at the loss are the reinforcements made by the children for remaining in the ambience of negativity.
I feel children need adequate guidance, support and care for achieving proper development. Therefore, from the budding stage itself, the parents and the teachers need to take strict steps towards managing and controlling their behavior (Meyer et al. 2016). During this process, if the child experiences any adverse situation, the parents need to provide support so that they can overcome the issue. I think observing the parents’ actions helps the children to learn. Herein lays the correlation with the aspect of observational conditioning in case of learning.
Depression is the immediate result in response to the situations witnessed by the children. It is very surprising for me to think that the children, under the influence of depression experience disorders in sleep, food and execution of the basic activities. This behavior makes their maturity at par with the adults. Sometimes, the behavior of the children is so strange, adversely affecting the psyche of the students (Young 2015).
School is a place, where the children get acquainted with the basic difference between the right and the wrong actions. Here, the teachers are the acting parents, entrusted with the responsibility of providing care, support and guidance to the children. Special care needs to be taken of the children, who behave strangely and remain secluded. According to my opinion, counseling sessions prove effective in terms of excavating the reasons for which the child is behaving in such manner. Involvement of the parents in these sessions proves effective in terms of gaining awareness regarding the best care, which is to be given to the children for overcoming the phase of depression (Glover 2014).
I would like to point out that not all the children have the same mentality. Surprisingly, some of the children are so mature from the budding stage, that they can very well manage themselves. This is because of gifted qualities of grasping things, which the children utilize in an efficient and effective manner. On the other hand, some of the children are physically and mentally affected, which compels them to indulge into various kinds of addictions like smoking, drinking in the age of 12 years. Here, behavioral theory can be brought in. These indulgences brings noticeable differences in the behavior of the children like showing anger to the parents, breaking things, hiding things from the parents among others (Gutierrez et al. 2015). These changes are not planned, as it involves a different kind of happiness by forgetting depression.
Attaching the aspect of psychology, depression fades away the general understanding of the events taking place in the surrounding of the children. If the loss is of parent, then the psychological affectation is worst. In this case, negative thoughts related to self-incapability captures the thought process of the children. This is harmful for their academic development. I think the children need to be made aware of the factors, which do not help in their development process. Patience is crucial in terms of achieving positive results. Losing temper aggravates the complexities in terms of worsening the physical and mental health conditions of the children (Stein et al. 2018).
Depression adversely affects the physical and mental wellbeing of the children. Prolonged duration of the depression phase is harmful in terms of the development and growth process. Therefore, timely prevention and cure is needed for providing proper development to the children. Counseling is the most important means in terms of gaining awareness regarding the incidents, which compelled the children to face depression. Face to face conversations proves effective for assessing the facial expressions of the children, under the influence of depression. Along with this, different therapies heal the psychological wounds of the children.
Different experiments can cure the depression within children. However, the effect it creates in the minds of the children is very strong as they experience tiredness and fatigue (Prenoveau et al. 2017). This is due to the repitation in the narration of the past events. Due to this repitation, the originality of the events is lost, making the matters more complicated for the children to have any kind of experience. Based on this, the causes of depression are less in their intensity, which can be solved with just a mere counseling session. Most of the times, the results does not come easily. Consistency needs to be maintained for reaching to the conclusions. This consistency proves more complex in terms of excavating the stimulus and the responses related to depression.
Children’s age and grasping capacity is crucial for conducting the therapies. Prior assessment possesses flexibility towards averting any adverse situation at the time of conducting experiments. In case of small children, the loss, generates fear and depression within the children. If they are compelled to undertake the tests, they feel traumatized (Quarini et al. 2016). It is at this stage, that the parents need to assure the children that the tests would cure them from depression. Seeing the machines, the children imagine terrorizing consequences. Herein, lays the correlation with the negative images of self in case of the children, which is an obstruction in the formation of the self image.
The surrounding people and events of the children, in the experiments needs to be considered for overcoming the erroneous transformation of information to the children. This is in terms of mitigating the inculcation of superstitions within the children. Therefore, education is the most important method for passing on the correct information to the children. The behavioral psychology can be taught to the children through the means of animal behaviour (Sonuga et al. 2016). This is in terms of the bondage between the children and the animals. Pets are an agent for healing the psychological wounds of the individuals, especially the children. They share an usual kind of bond, which beyond the understanding of the human beings. In research, it has been found that pets prove better housekeepers than the security guards.
For the working parents, child depression is a matter of serious concern, however, they fail to give proper attention, care and support to their suffering child. They just rely on the babysitters for ensuring the protection of their children. According to the researches, not all bondages between the child and the babysitters prove to be successful. This is in terms of the lack of adequate knowledge towards childcare or wrong intentions of child trafficking (Independent.co.uk 2018).
Depression is one of the major concerns in case of the children. The major drives behind this are biological factors and the circumstances, which adversely affect the psyche of the children. This affectation brings noticeable changes in the behavior of the children, which are mostly negative. In the fast-paced life of the 21st century, an issue like depression has been the cause of concern for most of the parents, especially those who are working. However, science has become so advanced, that it consists the cure of every issue, including that of depression. This is in terms of ensuring the physical, mental and social wellbeing of the children (Weersing et al. 2017). This proposal would shed light on the impact of depression on the behavior of the children.
The aim of this proposal is to excavate the impact of depression on the behavior of the children.
Research questions
This research provides an insight into the factors, which cause depression in children. Theoretical consideration into child depression would enliven the preconceived knowledge of the readers regarding the behavioral changes, which affect the growth and development process of the children. The research method would enhance the awareness of the audience regarding the solutions, which can be applied for helping the child to overcome the phase of depression. Along with this, the research would be assistance for the parents in terms of providing better care, support and guidance to the children (Villodas, Bagner and Thompson 2015). This research would also form an important research subject for the students, intending to pursue Ph.D in child and family studies.
According to the arguments of Samek et al. (2016), depression in the late adolescence period is due to the genes and environmental influences. Herein lays the appropriateness of the social learning theory, which proposes that child learns through observing the others. Here, the others are the parents, neighbors, school friends among others. In the period of late adolescence, the maturity is at a moderate stage, where the children can arrange for their care themselves. The external influences can be related with the erroneous transmission of logic, generating negative vibes within the children. Herein lays the effectiveness of Beck Theory. These influences makes the child confused, the most immediate expression of which is crying and depression, which needs to be handled tactfully, as one wrong step can hurt the individual sentiments of the children (Perrone et al. 2016). This tactfulness strengthens the bondage between the child and the parent and prepares the child for the future life. This tactfulness can be considered as an important aspect of the parental conditioning needed for providing the required care, support and guidance to the children when they are depressed.
A research is viewed from three philosophies- positivism, post-positivism and realism. Positivism helps the researcher to gain awareness regarding the real, scientific and objective knowledge related to the subject matter of the research. Post positivism is the assistance towards assuming the consequences and constructs towards the applied propositions. Interpretivism needs the researcher to interpret new facts related to the subject matter (Taylor, Bogdan and DeVault 2015). In this research, the researcher would apply positivism philosophy for gaining awareness about the real, scientific and objective knowledge related to child depression.
In a research, there are mainly two types of approaches-deductive and inductive. Deductive approach helps the researcher to deduce relevant conclusions from the applied propositions and assumptions. On the other hand, in the inductive approach, the researcher needs to induce new theories and facts related to the subject matter (Flick 2015). In this research, the researcher would choose deductive approach for deducing relevant conclusions regarding the factors, which bring noticeable changes in the behavior of the children due to depression.
In a research, there are three types of design- explorative, explanatory and descriptive. In the Explorative design, the researcher needs to explore the unexplored facts about the subject matter of the research. Explanatory design means the researcher needs to explain every minute detail related to the research topic. Descriptive design compels the researcher to describe the facts in a detailed manner (Silverman 2016). In this research, the researcher would select explorative design in terms of exploring the circumstances, which compel the children to suffer from depression.
The data for the research is collected through primary and secondary methods. In primary method, the means of survey and interview is used for collecting information on the subject matter. On the other hand, in the secondary method, case studies and journal articles are used for gathering data on the subject matter (Smith 2015). In this research, the research would desire to choose secondary method for collecting data on the effect of depression on child behavior.
The collected data is analyzed in two ways-primary and secondary. In the primary method, survey and interview questionnaires are prepared for analyzing the responses provided by the samples. Along with this, charts, tables and graphs are also prepared for the graphical presentation of the responses. In the secondary method, themes related to the subject matter of the research topic are prepared for analyzing the collected data (Panneerselvam 2014). In this research, the researcher would develop relevant themes for analyzing the impact of depression on the behavior of children.
For carrying out an authentic research, the researcher needs to follow certain rules regarding the consideration of the sources. The researcher can include those sources in the references, which are not older than 10 years. Along with this, the researcher needs to exclude those sources, which are older than 10 years. Apart from this, the researcher can include journal articles and government websites for adding to the reliability of the proposed facts (Smith 2015). In this research, the researcher would include those sources, which have been published in the last 10 years. This would include government websites and journals.
In order to carry out a research, the researcher needs to follow certain ethical considerations. The most important of this is the preservation of the individual sentiments of the samples. Along with this, exclusion of the sources, which need subscription is accounted within the ethical considerations of the research. Apart from this, using Data Protection Act (1998) is also the ethical responsibility of the researcher for enhancing his professionalism (Silverman 2016). In this research, the researcher would take permission from the government and the library prior to the initiation of search regarding the impact of depression on the behaviors of children.
The researcher attempts to conduct a research in an efficient and effective manner. However, time and financial constraints obstruct the efficient execution of a research. This would also be applicable in this research (Flick 2015). Time and financial constraints would compel the researcher to carry out only secondary data collection and analysis.
Action plan helps the researcher to carry out the research related activities in an efficient and effective manner. Along with this, the plans act as an agent in completing the tasks within the stipulated time (Silverman 2016). The following is an action plan, which the researcher would follow for carrying out this research:

Table 1: Action plan for the research
Through this research, I would be able to gain awareness regarding the behavioural changes, which comes in children due to depression. Theoretical considerations would enliven my preconceived knowledge, skills and expertise in this direction. Methodological approach towards the subject matter would assist in my higher studies in terms of measuring the bondage between the child and the family members. Pursuing this subject would help me to provide a new and unexplored direction towards the aspect of growth and development.
