This paper is a form of paper that helps to know about research and other elements which are required for research. With the help of this paper, one can build their primary knowledge about research and its characteristics and elements to proceed and to go forward with their research work. This paper discussion part mainly focused on some aspects of research, research questions, research methodology, ethical norms and other aspects regarding the same. Before proceeding with any research task, understanding the concept and its perspective is extremely important as this will be beneficial for the researcher to have a clear understanding which will eventually help the researcher to have a good quality outcome of research work.

Identification of a proper research topic is necessary and an important step for a go ahead with the work. The research topic and the concept of the subject are basically based on the interest of the individual. Identification of the interest area of the individual is important in the first place to select any topic. A suitable topic is not the subject or a broader area of the concept; it should be precise and concrete and also useful resourceful for processing the work. Ensuring the specific topic should be dependent on the individual’s interest, enthusiasm and knowledge. Also, looking after the previous work so that researchers can get enough academic paper to review and to work upon (Grewal et al. 2016).

The literature search is the best method to find articles and sources to have a good research work. It helps to develop questions objectives, find limitations and to plan the study. The available data will help the researcher to give relevant data which will be effective and useful to meet the purpose of the research. This process can be tiring, and sometimes researchers might feel disinterested as it is a time-consuming process. Thus, a researcher should go ahead with the process of finding the available sources with great patience in a specific manner. If this can be done in a systematic manner, then well-organized and good quality data can be useful for the specific topic. This provides an opportunity to have an insight on a particular topic which can be helpful to interpret ideas and to analyze, evaluate and examine the subject to work upon.

The literature review is one of the important steps for having the basic knowledge and to developing the foundation of the same. This helps to identify the area f research and develop an idea about the research topic, as well as helps to identify the limitation or the gap of the study. This is helpful in regards to knowing about the debates and conflict areas of the topic, which helps the researcher to recognize the need for more research to do. Also, finding out the positive aspect and negative aspects, proper data and limitations of the research can only be done by doing a review of different articles or literature of the subject by focusing on the specific topic.. The literature review helps to define and review the limitation to acknowledge and to move forward with the research work (Dimitrios and Fountouki, 2018).

Research question

After selecting the topic of the research, framing questions are necessary to proceed with the task. And then, selection of the type of the research questions is crucial as in what types of research methodology will be followed for the research. Depending on the task, the methodology should be selected. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed; these three types of methodology can be seen in research work. So, depending on the method, the questions for research are created by the researcher. Research questions should be formed in an easy way so that it gets easy to answer. The number of interrelated questions might get complex for the others to understand and to give an answer. Thus, rephrasing, specific and simple questions should get formed by the researchers. However, to form and frame meaningful research questions clear idea of concept, methodology and ability to analyze is necessary. Providing clear, meaningful and simple questions can be identified as a doable and coherent question for proceeding with the research work. For maintaining coherence between your research questions, analysis and methodology selection should be proper so that collection and evaluation of the gathered data get easy for the researcher to work on. Questions should be linked not only with the topic but also with the other questions. The approach of the research questions must be in a systematic way for having an appropriate discourse and notion of the study (Kinmond, u.n.)

In order to formulate and frame research questions, some necessary steps and factors should remain in consideration. For appropriate and meaningful research questions researcher needs to clear the approach, objective and aim of the topic. A clear understanding of the topic is crucial so that researcher can decide one of the important factors of framing the question, which is methodology. The methodology helps to formulate the questions and to identify the issues which the researcher should emphasize. The research question not only determines the issues of the research work to identify but also helps to shape the issues of the context in a hypothetical manner which leads to the outcome and main aim of the research work to make a conclusion of the research. Choosing the method of research questions guides the researcher to make way for proceeding with the task in a simple way. For well-developed questions and to meet the purpose, argumentive questions should not be a part of the questionnaire to avoid challenges. However, proper knowledge of the research, appropriate identification of the methodology, purpose of the study and a map to reach the purpose, avoiding inappropriate questions, avoiding numbers of inter-related and complex questions is necessary to factor to know about. Also, there are some other factors that are important to consider for developing research work. For a good research representation of FINERMAPS is important, which are, Feasibility, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, Relevant, Manageable, Appropriate, Potential value and publishability and systematic (Ratan et al. 2019).  

Methodology

The methodological approach is useful and helpful for proceeding with the task. The methodological approach refers to a way in which researchers proceed with the research work from a specific vision and context from a particular discipline. Basically, this is a planning for doing the research, which helps to implement and process the research depending on the methods. Methods and methodological approaches are different as in, the method is certain tools which helps to answer the research question of the topic and methodology is the rationale of the approach of the research which helps to analyze the research work in a systematic way. Basically, the whole design of the work is dependent on the methodology of the research. This is a systematic and proper strategy that outlines and helps the research to generate and gather data to proceed with a good quality task. (Brookshier, 2018)

The main two methodological approaches are- qualitative and quantitative. Also, there are other methodological approaches that are prevalent in the number of research work that is mixed research method. These methodologies or approaches help to design the work and to find the solution in a systematic way. Quantitative research is based on numbers and data. Numerical related research work is mostly based on the approach of the quantitative method as this helps to answer the questions through describing, calculating, analyzing, quantifying, measuring the facts and the collected data for the required task. And on the other hand, the Qualitative method is an approach that is helpful for descriptive analysis and evaluation of the research work. This paradigm helps to answer the required questions through words, pictures, data from different sources and the help of literature review. More conceptual and descriptive works are related to this notion of approach. When these two methods are useful for the research work, then a mixed research method is used to proceed with the task and to provide a good quality outcome. However, these three paradigms of research methodologies and approaches are most useful and have been utilized by the researcher for their work. As an example, in the research work which is based on mathematics, statistics are dependent on the approach of quantitative and philosophy, history, language and literature are dependent on the qualitative approach of research. (Rahman, 2017)

There are some challenges and opportunities for both approaches of methodology. For qualitative methodology,

It helps to know and gather detailed information and opinions about the subject, which automatically includes the feelings and description as in this method mostly the questionnaire formed as an open-ended question.

This approach helps to the human experience in different settings about the specific topic, and it has the ability to understand different opinions of the population, which helps to provide an unbiased outcome.

In this approach, unstructured interviews, participant observation, direct observation is mostly used to proceed with the research. Thus, this approach helps to analyze the issue and can construct the outcome to a greater extent to utilize the gathered data.

There are some challenges also to go ahead with this approach, and they are,

Data interpretation and evaluation can get complex as every description is different from each other as every experience is different. So, sometimes it gets difficult to analyze and evaluate to develop the study.

Some information and contents can be sensitive and not focused on the experience and meanings.

For some research work, low credibility has been marked for some of the outcomes for this approach as there is less statistical data as evidence.

For the quantitative approach, the opportunities are,

In this approach, the gathered data are mostly numeric, which is dependent on the larger sample, which is selected randomly. Thus, the collection of valid information can get easier.

 This approach is based on a positivist paradigm to measure the variables.

And the challenges are,

The positivism research paradigms do not help to get the proper information of social phenomenon. And it also fails to create an explanation and underlying meanings and definitions of it.

Positivism fails to maintain the social reality and the process of its shaping and also to evaluate the actions of the people.

It overlooks the experience of the people and the perspective of the concept which is already constructed in this society. (Rahman, 2017)

Ensuring credibility and reliability and using relevant and authentic data

Maintenance of the ethics of data collection. (INTRAC, 2017)

Hypothesis and framing proper questions which should be addressed.

Proper usage of data so that analysis and narrative get easier to complete.

Diagram and flowchart to represent the data and to keep the data in proper order.

 Research is the creation of new knowledge by putting different information which will be helpful and generate a new path for the other students and the research world. Based on the existing knowledge, which helps to generate the new one. Basic knowledge is necessary to proceed with the subject of research. Based on the previous knowledge, properly searching abut the research aim and objective, doing literature review so that the researcher can provide the best information in order to make the research work successfully. Creatively generating new knowledge new concepts by applying methodologies, questions and research design to make it understandable for others to analyze and to evaluate the research work is important. Thus, to find a good result from the basic previous knowledge, literature review, using proper resources, collecting data, taking interviews will help to generate new knowledge to address the research question and to achieve the research objective in order to get success.

Ethics: 

Ethical principles need to be maintained in the process of research. As research involves cooperation and coordination from different people from various backgrounds, ethical standards need to be maintained as this helps to promote the values of collaborative work. Thus, maintaining ethical norms, trust, accountability and mutual respect. Some resources have copyright and authorship policies, for which confidentiality maintenance is best to maintain the ethical norms. Also, ethical norms help the researcher to maintain the accountability of the data to the public, especially the researchers who have funded their research work from the public should be held accountable to the public.

This norm which is ethical and should be maintained for doing the research authentically, help to build support from others and from the public. Research funding is important for the researcher to make the research in a good way. Enough funding from the public helps the researcher to maintain the quality of the research work. Maintaining ethical norms will help the researcher more in solving their funding issues. The public will fund the research if they find the research work as authentic trustworthy according to the quality and integrity of the work. Thus, this can be said that research promotes social values and moral so that researcher does their work by maintaining all the norms and also maintaining the authenticity and relevancy of the work.

Honesty: Maintaining honesty in order to provide data, reports, results and procedures while doing the research work. 

Objectivity: Avoiding biased experimental data, data interpretation, and another perspective of the work is important. Minimizing and ignoring biased information can affect the research; thus, maintenance of this principle is crucial.

Integrity: Keeping the consistency and agreement of the work through actions is necessary to maintain integrity, which is effective for proceeding with the research.

Carefulness: Carefully working to avoid silly mistakes and careless errors so that the work can have a good record is important. Thus, critically examining the research work, design, data, and analysis is important before publishing it.

Openness: Research work should be done in such a way that data and results of the data should be open to analysis which will provide new ideas and criticism to make the research objectives stronger.

Transparency: Transparency is another key feature that should be maintained. Research data, methods, materials and other resources should keep in such a way that they can be evaluated.

Accountability: Responsibility taking for the part in the research work is necessary in order to give your explanation. Remaining accountable for your own research work is necessary to maintain the ethical norms and to establish your responsibility towards your research.

Intellectual property: Using authentic and relevant data and sources and giving proper acknowledgment for their contribution maintain the intellectuality of the property.

Confidentiality: Protecting the data and communications which were gathered for the research work is necessary. Thus, maintaining confidentiality is a principle norm that should be maintained.

Responsible publication: Publishing the research work in order to advance the research area, which will also be beneficial for the career of the researcher. Knowing about the publication to avoid duplicate publication is necessary.

Responsible mentoring: Helping and providing support in order to advance education and to promote welfare which will change the notion of society. Research work should be done in such a way that it will work as the provider for the students so that they can make their decision.

Social responsibility: Promoting social and cultural good is necessary for the researcher by their research work. Thus, research needs to be done in such a way that it helps the research area and the field of research work.

Non-discrimination: Discrimination and biasness are negative things that every researcher should avoid in order to make the research work non-discriminative so that the integrity of the research work is maintained.

Competence: Maintaining and improving the expertise area to have a good quality research work so that the researcher can take steps to promote the competence in an area of research

Legality: Knowing and understanding the legal laws and regulations so that the policies can be maintained (Resnik, 2020).

In maximum cases, quantitative research promotes the data and information from different and various sources, which needs to maintain the ethical norms. Theoretical research generally does not contain primary and practical data. Thus, the responsibility to maintain the ethical norms and ensure that they should be maintained is a must for quantitative research.

The ethical process needs to be done to provide protection towards the society so that it can help and protect the research and can be held accountable for their research work. Research ethics and the process govern and conduct the standard of the research work of the researcher.

Participation, feedback and reflection are fundamental to the research process. Public and students should use this section to think about the conversations, debates and discussions you have had about research since you started your master’s programme, give some examples of research ‘conversations’ you have participated in; what feedback have you had on your thoughts, discussions and debates about research, give some examples of this feedback – and reflect on how this participation and feedback contributed to your understanding of the research process. Feedback can be considered as a critical assessment of the task so that it can reflect the importance of it and can produce the contribution of the researcher.

Conclusion:

However, from the above discussion, this can be concluded that there are some necessary elements and characteristics of research. The researcher needs to be understood the rules and regulations and the concept behind them to make it successful for them and for the good of the larger society. Research work provides not only a good career way for the particular individual, but also it helps the other students and researcher to do their work and to guide them to think in a systematic way as this is helpful to promote a good educational background which will make the field stronger and will help to guide the individual in a good way. This discussion is totally based on principles and norms and the concept of research, and other necessary aspects of research which needs to be in mind before proceeding with the research work. Thus, providing the research objective and aim should be kept in such a way that the outcome will work in favour of the social good and for the well-being o others. To achieve this success, maintaining the structure of the research is important.
