Health care professionals are required to focus on adopting key approaches that can ensure the identification of patients’ specific needs and accordingly the care strategies can be developed. However, in the case of mental health issues, it is important for the professionals to consider related factors or aspects along with that the individual’s health condition or issue. Such analysis of related factors is important so that an integrated approach to care can be developed and further the care practices can be improved. Focusing on the case of depression and anxiety disorder the health professionals need to consider the key services available as well as the barriers affecting the care delivery system so that the patients can be provided required care services (Lake, 2017).
This discussion will focus on evaluating and understanding the risk of depression and anxiety disorder in the individual as well as in society. Further, the analysis will help to identify the key services that are available within the society which can provide required care to the patients, and the key barriers present at the social level or the healthcare delivery level affecting the care quality and mental health issues in the society.
In the UK healthcare sector, it can be reflected that mental health issues contribute towards being a key threat which is to be focused upon the care regulators so that required strategies considering individual needs can be developed. As per the available data, it can be reflected that every one in six individuals is dealing with a mental issue, and such depression and anxiety disorder contributes to being the key threat to health mental issues. About 7.8% of the individuals within the society can be identified to be dealing with the mental health issue of anxiety and depression. Such health issues or challenges are contributing to being a key challenge for society as well as towards economic growth (Mental Health Foundation, 2015).
The industry researchers reflect that the increasing cases of mental health issues are contributing to an increase in the number of individuals leaving or losing their jobs. Such mental health issues within the society can be identified to be high among the individuals within the age group 16-55 years, and lower in the case of individuals with age 60 years or more (Baker, 2022). The industry researchers reflect that there are several key factors present within the UK society that have an impact on the mental health issue or illness of individuals. Such may include job responsibility, social factors, health challenges as well as certain socio-economic barriers or challenges (Kwong et al., 2020).
Figure 1(Baker, 2022)
The presence of depression and anxiety disorder among individuals within the UK can be identified to have a negative impact on their income status as well as their physical health. Further focusing on the case of a pandemic the industry researchers define that the key issues and challenges present at the social level have a major impact on the individual psychological health and contribute to being a key cause of depression and anxiety disorder among the individuals in the society. Also, the pre-existing health conditions of the individuals within the society act as a key factor for the increasing cases of depression and anxiety disorder in UK societies (Shevlin et al., 2020).
However, it can be reflected that the healthcare regulators in the UK have defined several key policies and approaches that are to be adopted within the society to ensure the elimination of mental health threats as well as to provide the patients with the required support with respect to depression and anxiety disorders. Such includes providing mental health care at all levels within the society, different social groups as well as individuals from different age groups. In the UK, an NHS (National Health Service) dashboard has been set up to reflect upon the present status with respect to the mental health including that of depression and anxiety disorder so that the impact of care policies within the society can be identified and accordingly further care or support can be provided (Parkin, 2021).
Apart from the health policies being defined within UK healthcare, it can be reflected that there are various private as well as public care services available, providing the required support to overcome depression and anxiety disorder. Some of the services presently active in the UK society can be identified as Samaritans, Saneline, Mind Infoline as well as NHS England IAPT (Improving
Access to Psychological Therapies) (TTC, 2011). NHS IAPT ensures that the patients can be provided with the required therapies as well as counselling sessions that can help the patient to interact with the general practitioner (GP), who can further guide the patient or the individual the mental health issues such as anxiety and depression (NHS, 2022).
Further, it can be reflected that healthcare professionals are focusing on adopting digitalization or technological advancement in the care delivery process for depression. In the UK societies, it can be reflected that the healthcare regulators or the government have introduced NHS online websites and app libraries that can provide the required support or care to individuals dealing with depression and anxiety disorder. Such apps and online services have been designed majorly to attract and provide services to the young and the working populations, as they have a better understanding of the use of such online services. Also, the presence of such online services and e- therapies contributes towards improved access or the ability of individuals towards care services and further provides the professionals with data evidence from the society in respect to the increasing cases of depression and helps to develop policies accordingly (Bennion et al., 2017).
In UK societies, there are several voluntary organizations or agencies providing the required support or services to patients to overcome the risk of depression and anxiety disorders. Anxiety UK can be identified to be among such voluntary or charity-based organization that focuses on improved access to care services with respect to anxiety disorder by establishing support groups in the society that can provide required support as well as can further aware people about the negative impact or challenges of mental illness (Anxiety UK, 2022).
Despite the presence of such services as well as agencies in UK healthcare, it can be reflected that there are certain key barriers or factors which affect the delivery of quality care in the industry. Such can be identified as mental health illiteracy, financial barriers, social influences, and negative attitude towards professional help in case of depression and anxiety disorder (Waumans et al., 2022). Further World Health Organization defines that at the global level the lack of policies and challenges in the coordination of care approaches has been a key challenge or barrier affecting the quality of mental health care provided. Apart from such a key challenge or issue that has been highlighted by WHO is the lack of non-pharmacological support or care practices for mental illness in society (WHO, 2014).
A conducted industry study reflects that in healthcare the regulatory authorities have ensured defining key plans and approaches that can lead towards improved mental health status in the society. Such has also been defined to ensure that the policies can provide the individuals with the required support, but despite such, there exists certain inequalities as well as social challenges affecting the delivery of required care in the industry. Such social challenges or issues in the society in long term are expected to have a threat of socioeconomic deprivation, and further include the individual’s ability to access primary care services (Hodgson et al., 2020).
Based on the conducted study as well as the industry analysis it can be reflected that along with that the policy development and implementation, it is also required that in the mental care process the individuals are being provided with the required support and guidance over the period. Such support approaches should be focused on providing required care to the individuals as well as influencing them so that they can adopt an attitude towards self-help in society. Also, along with that the professional and medical health for depression and anxiety disorder, there is a need for the patients to provide the societal help as well as support from his/her family members so that an environment can be developed which can help them to overcome the risk of threat of depression or anxiety (Mind.Gov.UK, 2021).
In the process of providing support to patients dealing with depression and anxiety disorder, it is important to empathize with them and establish an environment where they can freely communicate and can share their feelings. Such approaches help the individuals to share their thoughts and feelings which is leading to depression or anxiety among them. Also, the professionals or GP dealing with such patients should ensure the adoption of an informal approach, as it helps in improved collaboration and understanding among the family members and friends of the patient and further, the long-standing impact of depression can be eliminated (Brown et al., 2014).
The industry researchers reflect that in the society, it is important to raise awareness about the impact of the mental illness on an individual as well as on his family, and further, the individuals should be guided to understand such symptoms within their family and friends so that they can be provided with the required support and care at the initial level. Such approaches are defined as the voluntary help provided by the individuals within the society. It can further be reflected that such approaches are important to ensure that the social influences as well as a negative attitude towards mental health support can be eliminated (Coles et al., 2016).
Considering the factors promoting the cases of depression in society it can be reflected that there is a need for the adoption of key strategies and practices at the workplace that can provide required support for depression and anxiety disorder. As it can be reflected that in the UK the increasing cases of mental illness is among the key factor resulting in job loss of the individuals, therefore, based on such it can be reflected that the employers should ensure adoption of practices which can promote a positive working environment and promote team support. Also, the approaches can be adopted towards the identification of social symptoms of depression or mental illness among the employees and further workplace strategies are to be adopted to support their care needs (WHO, 2022).
The overall analysis has been focused towards understanding and reflecting on the mental health issue of depression and anxiety disorder. It can be reflected that in the present society, the changing lifestyle, as well as the social factors, have been the key aspects contributing to the increasing cases as well as the risk of depression and anxiety disorder among individuals. However, to overcome such an increased risk of threat of anxiety several policies, as well as health approaches, have been adopted, but despite such key challenges or barriers can be identified within the strategy implementation process. Based on the conducted analysis it can be reflected that within the society it is important to provide the patients or individuals dealing with the mental health condition with the required support which can further influence self-care practices in the society. Such support should be provided at both the social level as well as at the workplace so that the health standards within the society can be promoted.
